Off the shoulder of Orion

Welcome to game 13 in our ongoing Chaos vs. Imperium campaign. With the Chaos uprising in Ameti Hive defeated and the surviving Chaos forces attempting to regroup in the wilderness, the war enters a new phase.
Having reviewed the events of the uprising carefully, the Inquisition have identified the influence of a powerful Chaos psyker – a precog that the renegades have used extensively to stay one step ahead of Imperial strategy.

Clearly such a threat cannot be allowed to endure. To this end, Inquisitor Bellerophon and his retinue are leading a search and destroy mission to eliminate the psyker and his guards. The psychic spoor has been followed to a rebel held bunker complex in the wastelands outside Ameti Hive. The Inquisitor and his party prepare to breach the defences and enter the underground tunnels…
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Inquisitor Bellerophon scanned the area surrounding the bunker entrance with his auspex, a heresy-era relic he had previously ‘liberated’ from a radical colleague who had gone too far in his use of forbidden artefacts. He noted the defence positions outside the main entrance and the patrols of renegade militiamen. Whoever built this complex back in the early colonisation days of Triskelion had known their trade – the only approach was head-on.

“Their defences are well positioned, even if poorly maintained. Subtlety is not an option” The inquisitor addressed his stormtrooper sergeant crouched next to him on the low rise they sheltered behind.

“Brute force it is then my Lord” The trooper responded. “I’ll prepare the men”

The inquisitor nodded “Keep my second team in reserve – once we breach the defences, I’ll want them with me when we search the tunnel complex”

The stormtrooper saluted and moved away at a crouch to brief the fire teams. Inquisitor Bellerophon took a last look at the auspex screen. Things were about to get bloody…

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The field of battle – the bunker complex entrance is in the top left corner, with the defences surrounding it. The Inquisition team is top right

The access road is heavily guarded

Bunkers and defenders cover the approach

The kill team moves up, all attempts at stealth abandoned

A Krieg squad, pressed into inquisition service, comes in on the left flank

The defenders respond – taking cover and returning fire

The race for the entrance is on!

Much easier to throw grenades from up here

The stormtroopers disciplined fire takes a toll on the renegade defenders

The renegades, aware of the critical importance of the bunker complex, push forward to repel the attackers

Inquisitor Bellerophon leads the charge

The Krieg die well, taking many renegades with them

In close, the superior skill and weapons of the Inquisition is too much, and the final defenders are slain

The second, more specialised Kill Team assembles outside the entrance as a sniper stands overwatch

Breach! The outer door is blown and the kill-team storms inside

Alarms sound throughout the complex and defenders rush to respond

Push forwards!

One of the Crusaders is first into contact, charging defenders behind make-shift barricades

He is soon joined by a frenzied Arco-flagellant

The underground complex

A renegade flamer eliminates the first kill-team members in a burst of prometheum

Having killed the lights, Death Cult Assassins and more arco-flagellants move down a side corridor, purging the defenders

The rest of the kill-team clears another room

The corridor layout confounds a cohesive assault – the raiding party is forced to split up

Death Cult Assassins combat fanatical militia

More of the kill-team assaults the command section of the bunker complex

None shall pass. One of the crusaders holds a T-Junction

The defenders hold on desperately

Kill Team members fall to the renegade commander

The raging chaos leader is finally laid low by a crusader

But where is the Psyker? The Inquisitor searches with increasing desperation as his Kill Team numbers dwindle

There! Isolated but undaunted, Inquisitor Bellerophon storms into the Psykers lair – and his guards

Alone, outnumbered and wounded, he battles the fell warp-seer

“In the name of the Holy Emperor of Mankind, I cast you out!” Bloodied but unbowed, the Inquisitor strikes down the Chaos witch and resistance in the complex collapses.

Imperial victory!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

That was a fun game – another custom scenario with a Kill Team mission to clear the defences followed by a Zone Mortalis assault on the complex itself. Having each mini act as an individual unit in the bunker meant that even real killers like the Death Cult Assassins had to work hard – no wiping out 3-4 enemy a turn.

A pleasing finale as well, with the Inquisitor himself finding the (hidden) target and, at the last, striking him down.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The demolitions charges detonated with a muffled crump as thick black smoke billowed from the bunker entrance. Inquisitor Bellerophon and the surviving kill team members watched as the ground collapsed into the tunnels below, forever burying the heresy they had contained.

The stormtrooper sergeant jogged up to Inquisitor Bellerophon with his vox caster in hand and a grim expression on his face.

“My Lord, reports from across the region – heavy Chaos landings are being reported. It seems the renegade forces are being resupplied and reinforced from orbit”

The Inquisitor scowled at the news and stared into the low grey clouds above, as if he could pierce them with his will to see the ruin descending on this world.

“It seems the forces of the archenemy want this world very much.” Inquisitor Bellerophon shook his head. “This is no simple uprising of cultists and madmen. We need to find the root of this heresy and burn it out.”

In the distance, the drone of the approaching assault carriers could be heard as they began their retrieval of the kill team. High above, the clouds reddened as the tortured atmosphere responded to the first orbital incursions.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Next game – the Chaos forces begin to rebuild with newly arrived weapons and armour – but the Imperium does not sit idle. Command nodes, fuel and munitions supplies are essential to the Chaos forces – these must be destroyed.

Enter the Antipodean drop-troops to the Triskelion theatre – death from above!

You once again demonstrate why your group does the best battle reports out there. The models, the terrain, the campaign, the custom scenarios... To me, you guys are the pinnacle of the hobby and I can only aspire to do battle reports like these someday after many more years of collecting, painting and building terrain. To me, this is what the hobby is all about and what really draws me in, much more than competitive play. I salute you. Keep up the great work and thanks for sharing!

Brilliant and inspiring stuff as always. Beautiful painting and modelling, and some very interesting and characterful figures.

The underground complex was great too - looked like printed layouts glued to foamboard? If so, were they your own or do you have a link - that's an idea I'd like to steal ;-)

Ace bat rep as always, your stuff is always a treat!

Top Notch! I may have missed it, but is the exterior ground a custom table or a mat?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Actually, I can see it is custom. How was the texturing done?

Hi Kestral

Thanks all for the comments - makes posting these reports worthwhile.

The mat was custom made by one of our group. The texture was made using a product called No More Nails - basically a building adhesive product. Dries firm but is flexible enough so the mat can be rolled up when stored.
