So I've currently got 7 mkiv marines unbuilt as I can't decide what to build them as. I'm currently thinking of building two HQs/apothecaries and using the remaining 5 to build a squad of something. My current collection includes:
LoW: Corvus Corax
HQ: preator with jump pack
Librarian in cataphractii armour
Elites: Contemptor Mortis with two multi meltas
Cataphractii terminators with lightning claws
Troops: two 10 man legion tactical squads
5 man melta support squad with rhino dedicated transport
5 man recon squad with melta bombs
Fast attack: 10 man dark fury squad
10 man seeker squad
Heavy support: Sicaran arcus
So what should I build my spare marines into?

If you are using the decapitation strike ROW I would suggest making a plasma support squad as they will gain preferred enemy against any unit with an independent character, you could also turn one into a apothecary with an augury scanner in order to shoot at deep striking units and further the survivability of the squad.

I use the recon company RoW as I prefer to infiltrate units rather than drop podding and it lets me ally them to my VIth if I want to. The apothecary with an augury does intrigue me, I like the idea of attaching one to a 5 man missile heavy support squad for some added anti air. The only problem would be that they have to start in reserves with the arcus (my other anti air unit) and have no way of getting about once they arrive.

The decapitation strike ROW doesn't stop infiltration, however the legion recon company doesn't allow terminator's. You could also turn the unit into a seeker squad which allows them the special issue ammunition and preferred enemy against a single unit, and with infiltrate you could either drop a whole bunch of templates on a unit first turn to take out light infantry or you could shoot some heavy 1 st t ap 2 shots at a more elite unit.

Recon company gives stealth to all infiltrated units for the first turn though and lets me take allies, I don't own any drop pods so I'd be missing out on one of the bonus provided by decapitation strike whereas I can make use of all the bonuses provided by recon company. I mentioned in my list that I have a maxed out unit of seekers, which are pretty expensive to field so I'm not looking to add any more otherwise they'll take up too much of the army.

Well other than a special support squad of some sort I can't think of any unit that would benefit your army.

As stated above, legion recon RoW prohibits terminators, and you also lack the 3x recon squad requirement (this has been confirmed multiple times as the correct requirement, but they haven't reprinted the book since it became an issue)

in your case I would suggest making them into support characters to provide cameleoline to squads they join. Apothecaries are excellent for this, but so are different consul types and praetors on foot.

This allows you to retain your stealth buff and infiltrate ability regardless of RoW used, and opens up better options for infantry-heavy forces such as decapitation strike, Primarch's Chosen (preferred over PotL because PC allows allies and it doesn't penalize you as heavily for the destruction of veteran squads) and in a pinch Chosen Duty (Delegatus WL)

with the above in mind and the force you have:

1x Legion Praetor / Consul-Delegatus (artificer, wargear of choice)
3x Apothecaries (camo, augury, your call on the rest)

1x Master of Signal (gives you a barrage weapon that is usually effective when used correctly, and will play nice with your arcus)


more generally, RG as a legion have many tools to make infantry work well, far better than any of the other 17 legions, so choosing rites of war that let you maximize the amount of useful infantry you can pack in are paramount. Veteran tacticals are very useful and should not be discounted, since you have the tools to get them where they need to be without transport tax, and the addition of an apothecary and hugging terrain they become difficult to kill outside of melee.

I would avoid discounting drop pods and at least add one or two for use with decapitation strike. there are several potent combinations that they allow you to use infantry to achieve to make up for the general lack of armor. (one example is marksmen/combiflamer veteran tacticals)

I can't actually find anything about recon company needing 3 units of recon marines, RaW in the book it states that a single unit must be taken as a 3rd compulsory troops unit. There is nothing in FWs faqs and erratas about the recon company RoW.
I only really have the terminators as they came with BaC and I built them to use in games where I'm not using recon company such as zone mortalis, I've not actually seen any raven guard lists that use terminators although their legion bonus is rather nice I think that they're a little slow to keep up with the rest of the army which is why most lists I've seen use jump infantry to utilise the furious charge bonus.
The apothecaries with cameleolines sounds good, that would go a long way to keeping my expensive seeker squad alive and my two tactical squads as well.
The master of signals intrigues me as they provide some useful buffs and that nuncio vox would work nicely with the dark furies, my only issue with them is that their orbital bombardment is not a reliable source of damage. Not only that but they are very limited in the wargear they can take. I am still tempted however.
Veterans are tempting however I'd be running them with marksmen which would mean they were filling a very similar role to my seekers.
While I'm not ruling out drop pods I don't actually own any which is partly why I'm not keen on decapitation strike.
I'd love to have a way of outflanking a heavy support squad but I can't actually figure out how to do it.

My book has in section effects:

Recon company: Legion recon squads are compulsory troop choices in the primary detachment

And in limitations note that it must contain additional compulsory which must be legion recons quad.

Don't see how that recon company effect can't be read as you must fill the 2 required with scout squads.
