Hey guys as title states. Wheres a good place to start? Not sure if Escape from Goblin Town is the right choice or something different. not looking to do massive battle, just small skirmish fights.

Thanks!

Id hold off on it for now, since a new edition is rumoured to come out this summer... so unless you really like the contents of the starter set, its probably a better idea to wait.

If you really want to start, you could always get what you need and just buy the small rulebook on Ebay or something.

Any particular factions youd be interested in?

Escape from Goblin Town is still just an amazing value. The models are all fantastic, it's got the full rules (of which the new edition will have only minor changes), and the terrain is great. If you can get it on discount, even better.

You've got a mix of three different Elf factions in there, just FYI, and no heroes

Elf armies can fight as allies, so no problems there. There are just a few more rules on how your warbands interact if they're from different armies.

There are a number of historical 28mm kits in plastic out there - Vikings, Saxons, Normans. They all have a command sprue that you can buy separately or get from e-bay, and will contain horns and banners. You'll also get more weapon arms and heads to convert your hero figures. The command sprues usually only have a figure or two on them, so are pretty cheap.

Heroes are easily converted from troop models - maybe swap the heads from one kit to another? Alternatively, just paint a different-coloured ring round their base, or paint the figure... err... more captain-like.

Banner bearers can be created from spearmen, or it's a minor conversion to give a swordsman a length of brass rod. Banners can be made from paper (there are some printable LotR designs still out there) or the metal foil in tomato puree tubes.

War drums for orcs can be found from various bitz sellers on eBay, although horns may suit the more mobile hunter orcs.

That will get you started with low-powered captains as heroes, and leave you to explore the named heroes at your leisure.

You're going to have a BRILLIANT time with this game!

I believe Scotia Grendel has some of them now. The orcs have had the red eye and white hand sigils removed from their shields, IIRC.

Weirdly, they are listed under Fantasy - 28mm - Metal - Generic Fantasy. The first links to fantasy races that you see take you to their other fantasy lines.

Here ya go:

The unit deals are pretty neat - 12 troops and command for £25

I hear people say this all the time, but I'm not sure I agree. Sure, if you want the model in the box its a good deal. The thing is I don't see a lot of use for the models in the box, outside of running the scenarios from the first movie. If you are playing non-scenario games, there's only 2-3 of the dwarfs in the box set that are likely to see any use. I don't see a lot of people using those goblins in their war bands, either.

The plastic scenery in the box is good, too, but IMO you really need at least three sets to build a decent table.

I would not want to discourage anyone from buying the box set if they really want it. Obviously, some people are scenario players (I am myself to a large extent) and they are great for that. If you want a whole set of Thorin's Company as a collector, the box set is probably the best way to get it (the alternative is an expensive set of fine cast miniatures). Just be sure you want what you are buying before you spend your money.

Watcha mean? Goblin-town army is awesome! I've like doubled mine from the starter set, with two finecast captains and another 30 some goblins and the alternate goblin king. But I'm crazy, so there's that.
Thorin's Company are great to have as well, just like The Fellowship - best used for scenarios, sure, but still iconic. A second set is great to use for conversions for other Dwarf captains or heroes, or for Battle Companies.
Actually talking about this made me remember I own two sets... uhm

We have guys that have 2 of the starter box for the dwarves and we aren't running the scenarios from the movies at all. Also if one is wanting to run a goblin army, you're getting the goblin town scenery plus a ton of goblins.

Fair enough. Maybe I'm just letting my own indifference to the Goblintown Goblins show.

Why would anyone want doubles of unique character figures? I can see getting the plastic Thorin's Company from the box set, and the Finecast Erebor set as the latter are armored version of the Dwarfs.

There's lot of neato conversions of Thorin's company for other Dwarves for Battle Companies and adventurers. There was someone recently on GBHL that had converted a plastic set of Thorin's company and they looked super awesome.

Conversions and having a version of each model mounted as well as on foot.

Which is rather important in a game where you can be knocked off your mount.
