Hi,
I have just came to realize that I had never played a narrative game of 8th, whereas I used to play some in previous editons.
I will soon fix that, and I will buy the open war cards deck latter on.
In addition, as a 30k players I have the 30k missions available, and I may try some in 40k.
So, even if for the time being I haven't diversified my game, I will soon.
What about you ?

Matched play missions from either BRB or CA are most common in my group. A few of us have dabbled in narrative missions but its hard to switch off the Matched play attitude sometimes, so they don't always work.

For big Apoc style games, its usually just kill each other for 6 turns.

Never got around to adopting the popular tournament format rules in 7th, but introducing them to my group is my next goal for 8th edition.

The Open War cards are great. Though they will occasionally create some pretty unusual situations. We also find it fun to give out some extra twist/surprise type cards even if power levels are even.

Eternal War.

I'll typically offer my opponent the choice between Maelstrom and Eternal. If they have no preference, I roll on the Eternal War table.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades!

Preferably Open War cards, sometimes ITC missions and lately some Eternal War missions to prep for an upcoming tourney that will be using them.

I have a document with all the maelstrom of war, narrative and eternal war mission from both rulebook and CA 2017 list, and with each battlezone. Each week when I challenge an opponent I ask them to pick something from the list. Once played it gets crossed out. I my life goal is to play every single mission from that document before I die.

40k: Space Marines (Rift Wardens) - 8050pts.
T9A: Vampire Covenants 2060pts.

The Open War cards. You get a nice variety, and they make you end up doing something you wouldn't have thought of otherwise.

Tried a few different eternal war/maelstrom missions but every game of 8th for me has always resolved by tabling or surrendering in the face of impending tabling.

In 7th I play the same variety of eternal war/maelstrom missions and they usually result in objectives mattering.

"Hold my shoota, I'm goin in"
Armies (7th edition points)
7000+ Points Death Skullz
4000 Points
+ + 3000 Points "The Fiery Heart of the Emperor"

Yep, I think the biggest culprit here for me has been variable game length. Games of 8th should be capped at turn 5, no exception. Since I started capping at 5 and playing progressive scoring missions only (the kind that make you deprioritize just murdering your opponent to score points, because you should never play any other kind otherwise what's the point of having a mission) I have never failed to have a mission go to objectives, and often the side that's losing the actual casualty fight wins the mission because they were playing for it.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"
