As the title states, I’m looking into buying into Tzeentch. The models are amazing and I’m hoping that a decent chunk of them will port over into 40k once the Thousand Sons codex hits.

That said, I only want to start with a solid chunk instead of a HUGE buy-in. I was curious as to what would be considered a decent “core.” I am looking at purchasing the following:

1) The holiday Battleforce
2) The Start Collecting box
3) A Lord of Change

Would those three things give me a good basis to get games in with, or do I need to expand a bit more?

Thanks in advance!

I wouldn't consider an LoC to be a "starter" model for the force unless you're 100% sure you want to play a daemon force focused around a Lord of Change. If you're looking to start a Tzeentch force, I would recommend the Arcanites Battleforce or SC Daemons box depending on whether you're wanting to focus on mortals or daemons. You could also mix the two if you'd like, but there may be some synergy issues there. Most buffs only affect one or the other.

My main focus will for sure be on Tzaangors. I love those things. I included a Lord of Change/Kairos Fateweaver mainly because of just how awesome of a model he is. If I were to focus on mortal aspects, what might you suggest?

The Battleforce box, definitely. Get one, maybe even two of those. You'll get a TON of Tzaangors including their elite and hero variants. I'd also recommend running your standard Tzaangor squads in groups of 30 to get the most out of their unit size buff. The LoC is definitely an awesome model. Only problem is it doesn't have any direct buffs to Tzaangor units other than giving the Shaman +1 to casting/unbinding (Shamen are Tzeentch Daemon Wizards because of their discs). Tzaangors are buffed by Arcanite Heroes, and Skyfires/Enlightened are buffed by Tzaangor Shamen. Of course, the LoC is a powerful spellcaster in his own right. Personally, I prefer using the point to run a Gaunt Summoner with a Balewind Vortex. His spell is just stupid powerful, and the Vorex upgrades it to insanely powerful.

I do like the Gaunt Summoner model as well. Would Kairos help anything at all or is he like the LoC without too much of a boost?

Kairos is honestly worse IMO. His spell is less useful for any list, and he pays a premium for the ability to change the outcome of a die roll once per game. This is less useful now that it can't be used to change the turn order roll. A shame, because I like his variant better than the standard LoC design. I plan to build the model as Kairos, but use it as a standard LoC when I start running a Daemon list. Just to be clear, either Kairos or a Lord of Change would be useful in any Tzeentch list, but there are cheaper options that do more for an Arcanites list.

Okay, gotcha. Thank you very much for the info, it helps a lot. Any other suggestions you can think of?

Well, if you're interested in Tzaangors, I might recommend running them as a Cult of the Transient Form battalion. It gives you some cool extra rules like changing slain Kairic Acolytes into Tzaangors.
