The John Carter of Mars Kickstarter - Adventures On The Dying World of Barsoom https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/modiphius/john-carter-of-mars-the-roleplaying-game/description
is unlocking a lot of 32mm scale multi-part resin miniatures alongside the RPG. These are aimed at collectors, RPG fans but also to go with the planned Swords of Mars skirmish game which uses a stripped down version of the RPG rules. Here's a few of the unlocked sets

Holy crap...that's a brave undertaking. That movie tanked incredibly hard (despite the IP being popular prior to release). Balls, they've got `em.

I see enough Mars based games and hobby projects this could survive, so good luck to them.

Still waiting on my Conan Monolith crossover stuff.

Since then I’ve seen them tackle Star Trek, Fallout and now John Carter.

But still I wait...

I know that book is complete and in editing and it's one of the first being printed from Wave 2 for Conan so that will ship as soon as it arrives (you don't wait for the rest of the line to get shipped). We actually should have run this a year ago but waited till all the miniatures were completed and the book finished to reduce any chances of delays

The general consensus seems to be that the movie tanked because of Disney's absolutely crap marketing. As you said, the IP was popular and I don't think the movie effected that, except perhaps in the eyes of the general movie going public (who are certainly not the target audience for this game).

In any case, the Kickstarter met it's funding goal in less than 24 hours and has already met multiple stretch goals, so the KS itself seems to be pretty much a success.

I enjoyed the movie a lot. I think it has a worse rep than it deserves.

Really like these minis, especially the Thark.

Not sure about the figures, but I'd like to pledge. Let me see what I can do. I make it a point to support Barsoom stuff on principle... ..but boy that Jon Carter pose is goofy. I suppose it is an allusion to the leaping. : )

I've been wanting a decent Thark sculpted to modern standards for some time.

Hoping there's a Thark warband at some point. Maybe with some mounted models too?

We can hope, right?

Poorly lit photos of my ever- growing collection of completely unrelated models!

No, the consensus was that it was a bad film. Couldn't even follow one book and was completely forgetable.

As for the KS--not my aesthetic, so pass.

I doubt the moviegoing public declined to see the film because it didnt follow the 100 year old books closely enough. Joe Average probably hasn't heard of John Carter!

The issue really was the insanely bloated budget (300+ million!), terrible marketing and bland title. They could have called it "John Carter: Martian Ape Puncher" and it probably would have made 10 million more.

Awesome! Please post pics of actual miniatures, preferably painted.

You can buy (not kickstart, not pre-order) such a figure right at this very moment. Downside is, it's even more expensive than Modiphius (although presumably not by much). I bring this up by way of, I guess, continuing to be hard on Modiphius. So far they have tackled three properties I love but something, or more likely a number of things, prevent me from getting into them. The big one is - where are the miniatures? Time and again, it's all renders. Also, what about these skirmish games for Star Trek and, now, John Carter? Maybe Fall Out will finally get to market, and gamers will make some Let's Play videos or something to give potential customers a sense of these games and miniatures.

We'll be getting 3d prints during the KS to show off. We're aiming for the same production quality as Fallout: Wasteland Warfare if you've seen those. There's plenty of pictures of the Star Trek Adventures miniatures out there now as they've been in distribution since late September, I should probably start a thread here to show them off and talk about the Red Alert rules for them - the idea is a 'simpler' system to play fun battles using stripped down versions of the RPG rules (heroes and squads). We're making the Red Alert rules free to download so anyone can grab them to play with the minis. The John Carter version is based of the Red Alert system so we'll follow suit with that. Now all the painted minis are in for Fallout's core sets they'll be a lot of videos starting to come out - however the team are head down on final rules edits and approvals with Bethesda first. Aside from our previous metal line with Achtung! Cthulhu this is our first major releases in resin - so hopefully the quality people see in the Star Trek figures will show what we can do with the other lines. We've got a great track record in RPG's so will take some time to get caught up with that in wargames.

Not really.

After all, a person of the Victorian era would consider them all to be effectively naked.

If I had the extra money I'd get in on this one, and I usually don't do kickstarters (never done one before, in fact). I love the minis, and the movie was really good I thought. Never read the books, but they are on my "want to read" list for sure.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

Someone from that era seeing people on a beach in miami or ibiza would think they are just as 'naked'

I think our expectations of what a Barsoomian should look like are shaped by Frank Frazetta more than the Victorian perspective.

And so I too say they're grossly overdressed.

Plus, well, most victorian explorers usually didn't write about how "naked" the natives were, but about how quaint it was that they used palm tree leaves or whatever as clothing.

But I guess that, as we ourselves are not actually victorian era people, His Master's Voice's point is kinda more relevant.

You opinion. I actually thought the movie was quite good and I've heard the same from a lot of others. Sure, it has some flaws but what movie doesn't. I still maintain that if Disney had not stuffed up the marketing, it would have been a lot more successful.

Voss wrote:

Its true descriptions in the books portray them as effectively naked except for belts and jewelry, but the miniatures are in keeping with the majority of the artwork done for the books. My image of John Carter and the others was based on Frazetta's cover art and interior illustrations and the miniatures are very close to that.

Also, sculpting them as truly naked would probably have limited the sales of the figures, as those sort of figures tend to turn a lot of people off.

Yeah I don't think they would have been able to have mainly stark naked guys and girls either in the artwork or the minis.

The minis (and the film depiction) are a good compromise - I am hoping someone comes out with a MDF flying skiff for it - love airships.

IMO the film is good fun - the critics did not like it but they adored The Last Jedi

Looks like very nice miniatures but not really interested in a RPG so it is a pass for me. Though I wonder why they do a Kickstarter for this yet let Fallout fall thru without one? makes no sense.
