Today I saw a Imperial Dauntless Class Light Cruiser literally single handily take down a Chaos Planetkiller in two turns of shooting and then ramming it to death, which happened to destroy it as well.

Nova Cannon bang on a Battlebarge, taking out its Warp Engine....took quite a few ships with it.

Also the first shot of the battle!

It was like a story from a novel. Chaos opponent kinda ignored it devoting most of his fleet to another task and this small ship came up and the Imperial player had some amazing dice rolls and well bye Planet Killer... but sadly the Imperial ship was also lost when it rammed it. But great space battle though, one of the most exciting I’ve watched.

I'm sure the Emperor shed a tear at its demise for such selfless heroism

Seen some intriguing things through the years, especially while demoing the game in conventions. Chain explosions ripping whole wings apart, "ld 10 what could go wrong" -fatalities with asteroids and flagships, single crippled imperial cruisers playing "hide, seek 'n' ram" with 14 hp Hive Ships... the game is great for creating those situations. And then there are the other silly parts, like accidentally putting 1000 points of ships on patrol and finding them almost touching 3000 points of tyranid killerbugs before the first turn

Some of my personal favourites still have to be the adventures of amilaari Nutipää ("amiraali" would be an admiral in Finnish, while "nutipää" is a somewhat comical expression for someone who might be a bit off his rocker and have a dash of anger management issues on the side), my pal's hapless commander. He has managed to set his own ships on fire, casually stroll out of the fighting space with broken engines, engage badly thought out All Ahead Fulls to all sort of celestial phenomena with predictable results and other misdeeds that might get a lesser weasel shot. One time he had a decent Ld-value but his ship suffered critical damage early on in the game, with Krakens tearing his command bridge out into space, reducing it to something like 4 or 5. The overjoyed crew, happy with the loss of the damned blighter, managed to pass every single test for the rest of the game

I havent played bfg too much, but the craziest moment was when my dauntless light cruiser plunged into the center of eldar fleet in turn one, stayed there and survived until the end of battle undamaged... after that it was renamed "Armour of contempt"

My Ork fleet fought a deactivated Black Stone fortress and lost while my opponent happily shot Nova Cannons and sniggered as I lost to the scenery in a tournament game....

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.

My best recollection was playing an intro game at one of GWs Grand Tournies back in the 90's (?) when the game first came out. 4 Imperial Cruisers on their side, 4 Chaos Cruisers on our side, lined up head on to each other. Two turns or so moving straight at each other, the Imperials launch their torpedoes, heading right down the nose at each of our chaos ships. We look at each other and in our (chaos) turn we drive right through the torpedoes. I think one of our ships took one hull damage, it was amazingly bad rolling on their part. Then with the ships interleaved C I C I C I C I The chaos cruisers, all at short range, open up and incinerate all the Imperial ships, broadsides everywhere.

The resulting cataclysmic explosions of the Imperial ships vaporized most of what was remaining, with a chain reaction of exploding ships. When it was all done, I think 1 or 2 crippled chaos ships limped out of the blasts, but we won.

It was hilarious and I bought a starter box right then and there.

Of course, all your anecdotes pale into insignificance next to my might Empire Fleet in Man'O'War.

Ever seen a squadron of War Galleys ram and sink a Black Ark of Naggaroth? I've done it. Was superb!

Or the time we were playing the Treasure Island scenario. We both got crews onto the Island. I wiped him out, stole the treasure, and figured there was nothing to stop me splitting my crews up and stealing their by then abandoned ships.

Man O' War? Bah! If it sinks, you can just swim home. Real men brave the poisonous air of space!

My personal favourite happened during a 1000pt Planetary Attack game. It was meant to kick off an Epic 40K ground campaign by landing troops on the planet. The attackers were Ultramarines and the defenders were Orks. Now Space Marines in BFG were built true to the fluff in that they're pretty slick at planetary assaults, so we didn't expect it to be a fair fight. Basically I thought the Orks (me) might whittle down the attackers a bit before they were comprehensively obliterated.

Now what you have to understand about this battle is that in the previous game, a massive throwdown against Chaos (which you can read about here), the Marine Battlebarge was blasted by an Activated Blackstone Fortress's warp cannons. Not enough to cripple it, and to be honest it was a bit of a tactical waste when the Fortress could have been zapping Imperial cruisers instead... but we decided that the daemon controlling the thing must have had some nefarious scheme in mind. (I'm thinking of the plaguebearer that got aboard the Imperial ship in Execution Hour.)

Anyway, back to the Planetary Assault mission. Not long into the game, the Orks decided to board the Battlebarge en route to the planet. It had Terminators on it, so this was slightly suicidal. (Orks usually do well in boarding actions, but not versus Marines...)

A Kill Krooza and a Terrorship both managed to touch base and start smackin' beekie headz. The absolute best result I could possibly hope for was that the Orks might do a couple of damage points and then move on. There was no possible way I could actually stop the huge ship from reaching the planet.

Or so I thought.

Then we rolled the dice. The result was a tie. Something we'd never, ever seen happen before in a boarding action.

And if you get a tie result, we learned from the rulebook, the ships grapple together and keep fighting. Without moving. Until one side or the other is destroyed.

Marine player: Uh oh.

(I should mention here that the BFG boarding rules are a blemish on an otherwise excellent ruleset and constantly throw up rules problems. Likely because they were a quick bodge-job from Epic 40K. But never mind.)

We watched in increasing disbelief and helpless laughter as the boarding action turned into a rugby scrum worthy of Warhammer Fantasy. For the next few turns the crew of the Battlebarge ran around in increasing panic as the Ork Meganobz sloooowly chipped away at their numbers. The Terminators teleported into action again and again, desperately trying to wear down the kroozers before the barge ran out of damage points. Meanwhile a pair of Strike Cruisers circled the melee helplessly and lobbed bombardment cannon shots into the mix. As if things weren't mad enough, a stray orbital mine that I'd bought as a planetary defence to use up a few extra points drifted serenely into the scrum and blew up.

The Kill Krooza was reduced to a smouldering wreck, but the Terrorship held on until the Battlebarge hit zero damage. To cheers of " 'Ere it goes!" the boyz hopped back in their motor and released the grapples. The huge blue hulk drifted for several more turns toward the planet until it was caught in the gravity well and slowly swung about...

Gee whiz, nice curse you laid on it there, Mr Blackstone Fortress.

After my opponent had picked his jaw up off the floor, I asked him if he wanted to concede and disengage. Normally he's a bit of a 'game first, fluff second' sorta guy, but not this time. With an expression of grim determination he said, "No. Marines would never give up."

Both Strike Cruisers came about and raced back to the planet with the surviving Ork kroozers hot on their tails. They dove into low orbit and *just* managed to disgorge a few drop pods before the kroozers caught up and blew them apart. (Forward-facing Ork 'eavy gunz up the tailpipe make even Marines cry.) Said kroozers then buzzed the planetary governor's palace before roaring back into the sky. Pull up pull up pull up zoggin' eck dat was close!

In the end the Marines managed to land 1600 pts of Epic 40K troops (thanks White Dwarf 'Death From The Skies' article )... but were now stranded on the planet. Meanwhile, the fiery meteor of the Battlebarge began its descent. Can you say 'nuclear winter'?

Job's a good 'un.
