I've collected models for quite a few years now, but never got into the gaming side of things. However, recently I've come across an opportunity to get into playing some small scale wargames - of which LotR is the perfect fit. I already own some 50+ Warriors of Minas Tirith, alongside dismounted Faramir, a Bannerman and a Blackroot Vale Hornblower.

Basically then, could anybody advise me on making up a 500pt Gondorian Army (Including my current models) and an opposing 500pt Mordor Army. I'm not adverse to buying new models within reason but I'd like to keep it as cheap as possible - so no multiple blister-packs or higher end models would be ideal. Similarly, which rulebooks and supplements would I need to play some casual skirmishes?

You could make an army out of that, although you would probably need at least one more Hero (named or generic) as you need a hero for every 12 warriors. You could either buy the generic MT Captain, or convert one of you plastic warriors into a Captain. That would be a bit one dimensional force, though. If you are open to buying some more figures, the plastic Rangers box is probably your best buy. It will give you some good missile troops to supplement your MT Warriors. Another (albeit someone more expensive) option would be to add some cavalry, in the form of Knights of MT or the Swan Knights of Dol Amroth. I think the Knights of MT were plastic, but the Swan Knights are metal, so noticeably more expensive so you might want to just go with the plastic box. I like to mix infantry and cavalry, especially in my Human lists. OF course, if you want some magical muscle, Gandalf the White (mounted or on foot) is always a good buy.

and an opposing 500pt Mordor Army.

Mordor is one of those lists spoiled for choices. The Morranon Orcs are a popular choice to build your force around. They are a bit more "elite" than the standard Mordor Orcs but they are also available in plastic boxes so they're not too expensive to build a couple warbands with. A box of plastic Warg Riders would not be a bad addition to the Morranon Orcs. Add a few generic captains to lead your warbands, and maybe one of the Ringwraits (genric or named) to give you some magic and I think you'd be set!

Sorry, I don't have my books with point values in front of me, so I can't offer specific 500 point lists but hopefully this will give you something to think about?

As said, its 1 hero per 12 warriors. You can also take solo heroes if you want and 0 warriors. So its totally possible to run the Fellowship but they would in most cased be outnumbered and you want bodies to take hits.

For rules, currently the hobbit rulebook is the newest. Though this summer its slated to get rebranded into "Middle Earth, Strategy Battle Game" from the Hobbit since the license renewal.

Also the blue books are current rules. "Kingdom of Men" and "Mordor" is what you want

As for examples, a Captian gondor here is 50 pts while a base warrior with no options is 7.

I always suggest the staples for the classic Gondor vs Mordor matchup:

Gondor: Commanders finecast box, Armoured Boromir , 2x boxes of plastic Warriors of Minas Tirith, plastic Rangers, and plastic Knights. (so you have all the plastic Warriors of Minas Tirith that you could ever need probably!)
Flavorful add-ons - all metal blister packs: Madril, Faramir, Damrod, Osgiliath Veterans, Citadel Guard.
winds up being a very fluffy "Reclamation of Osgiliath" army, with Boromor and Faramir leading bedraggled Warriors and Rangers.

Mordor: finecast Mordor Commanders box, 2 x boxes of plastic Mordor Orcs, Add some character with Shagrat & Gorbag metal blister pack, and a couple packs of metal Mordor Uruk-Hai.
Want to add some elite troops? finecast Morannon Orc Commanders, box of plastic Morannon Orcs.
winds up being a very fluffy Cirith-Ungil based army with a mix of all the Mordor troops - Shagrat, who is a Mordor Uruk-Hai, with a contingent of Mordor Uruk-Hai; Gorbag, a devious Orc Captain leading orcs; and a contingent of elite Minas Morgul / Morannon orcs attached for good measure.

"...and special thanks to Judgedoug!" - Alessio Cavatore "Now you've gone too far Doug! ... Too far... " - Rick Priestley "I've decided that I'd rather not have you as a member of TMP." - Editor, The Miniatures Page "I'd rather put my testicles through a mangle than spend any time gaming with you." - Richard, TooFatLardies "We need a Doug Craig in every store." - Warlord Games "Thank you for being here, Judge Doug!" - Adam Troke

Here's a simple 500 point Minas Tirith army list split into warbands for ease.

warband 1 - 217
Faramir with heavy armour and shield - 90
5 Warriors of Minas Tirith with shields - 40
6 Warrioras of Minas Tirith with spears and shields - 54
1 Warrior of Minas Tirith with banner and shield - 33

Warband 2 - 157
Cirion - 55
6 Warriors of Minas Tirith with shields - 48
6 Warrioras of Minas Tirith with spears and shields - 54

Warband 3 - 122
Damrod - 20
6 Rangers of Gondor - 48
6 Rangers of Gondor with Spears - 54

Total = 496

You can use the extra 4 points to add spears and shields wherever you see fit. you could also swap the rangers for warriors with bows if you don't wanna buy more stuff.

Rangers benefit from higher fight value and better shooting, but lower defence. They work well supporting your heavily armoured troops. Low cost heroes like Damrod and Beregond allow you take more models which is a real bonus for a pretty high defence army as you can out number a lot of opponentsm or be on equal footing with more traditional hordey armies like Mordor Orcs.
