Dakka-Dakka won't let me put any links in my first post, so I guess this is a place holder until I can edit it all together again.

Being the geeks that we are, I'm guessing most of you will have heard of Ready Player One, and those of you that have read the book will know what "The Stacks" are.

For those few of you out there who have no idea: Imagine over population has led to the point where even trailer parks are getting too full. The only answer? Start stacking them on top of each other, like huge, ugly skyscrapers. The protagonist in the books lives in one of these - brilliant book, would recommend, etc., etc..

So I started thinking that one of these caravan towers would make a great piece of terrain. And then I started searching to see if caravan models actually exist. Turns out, unless you want to spend ~£50 on each one, you're stuck with a few very basic, ugly old ones.

This is where we started:

A few weeks later (notice how the Lego is gone and a central tower has been added, also a few bits of paintwork and detailing added, because I find it difficult to focus on one thing)

A little phase of considering adding floors, as well as looking at how to make it a more usable piece of terrain (eg, barriers and defensible positions):

Finally work out what sort of thing I was after and started building up the base:

That's it for now. This probably takes us up to a few months into the project. It's much further on since then, but I'm going to take my time updating it.

Related: I discovered Dakkadakka though ClanMac's Junktown which I found when looking for post-apoc-style generators (really wish I had have found it when I started the project).
You guys seem to be one of the the few places that still exist where you can use multiple pictures and join them up with text. Reddit, instagram and a variety of other places come nowhere near.
It's nice to see this kind of space still on the Internet ^_^

The next big jump was probably the basing.

That, and completing a couple of the caravans.

More to come,

This is where we're up to:

Here's that heavy-duty looking one:

This is the lookout post up top:

The first generator, made from a 1:43 jaguar engine. Not sure if it's going to be attached or used as scatter for another part of the model.

As you can see, there's a big mix of finished, half-finished and not-even-started-yet parts to this model. There's also going to be a lot of weathering and tying in once the component parts are finished.

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

Definitely an inspirational piece!

Did you have trouble balancing the different components (what kind of support does it have going through the centre?)

Could see this being a brilliant piece of terrain as a centre piece, amazing work!

And completely agree about the forum and Dakka being a brilliant place to post this kind of project work.

This is the current bit of work:

It's going to looks like a chill out deck with sofas, probably potted plants (or plants of pot), fridge, beer bottles and various other bits and pieces. Obviously very WIP at the moment.

Thanks for the comments, guys.
@Pacific: The centre is part of one of those yellow plastic cranes for kids. It's pretty solid, but I have recently realised that I have no way of storing/transporting the final product, so it's likely I will end up cutting it in half and putting something else in there as well.
Despite being part die-cast and part cardboard, the components seems to balance quite well. I think adding the large base to the model has helped significantly.

I'm currently in the process of looking for some futurewars rules that aren't clunky, unbalanced, or just bad (surprisingly hard to find). At the moment I've giving up and adapting some of the FUBAR ones together to make a nice set.

Very interesting (yet unusual) inspiration, and you're building it so cool and full of details that every corner will make a great picture.

Roof-Top-Decking: because where else are you going to hang out with your buddies during the apocalypse.

Slightly more done to this now. I think I went overboard with the green on the windows, and the photos seem to be causing the whole thing to look like it has a 'walking dead filter' on it.

Very nice.

Where did you find the various trailers? They appear to be about 1/43 or 1/48 scale, is that correct?

I don't know, but it smells...

Love this idea and the execution - brilliant.

It's not big, it's not clever, but let's do it anyway.

Taking a bit closer look at things:

It looks like a simple 4 post I beam metal frame.
With "homes" rotated 90 degrees at each level.
I "think" they are work site offices:

On the sides that do not stick out, a staircase is run (in some cases both sides) so it goes in a cork-screw around the stack.
Notice each home has at least a couple solar panels, what looks like propane run heating/cooling and each stack has it's own series of water towers probably to deal with water pressure outages as needed.
A fair number of windmills are also added throughout.

The wiring looks a bit like in India.

Sorry, maybe not that bad.

Looks good so-far, good luck!

Pretty much spot on. Some are carboard print outs at vaguely the right scale. A few are OOP diecast models which I bought for less than £5 on ebay (broken models go cheap) the chunky looking white tops are old corgi ones (also from ebay). I think some of them range up to 1:50th scale.

@Talizvar: I have no idea what you're talking about But a fair point, mobiles like that would be a good basis for the same idea. I think I've seen some concept art like that somewhere. In the books the stacks are a hodge-podge of different vehicles of varying sizes. I think in the film they kind of followed the same idea.
.That style cabling is exactly what I want to go for in a couple of the secluded bits of the model. I think if they were all over it, while it would look cool, the model would be unusable as a piece of terrain.

@ all: apologies for the lack of updates. I realised a while ago that I've hit a big hurdle to climb with the model: how to make it storable. Currently it's both tall and wide, which is unhelpful.
My plan is probably going to be to rip the tower off and somehow make it removable. The problem with that is obviously the weight of half a dozen diecast models will be hard to support.
Currently thinking of two brass rods with brass sheaths, but that's going to be a huge pain to install.

To tide you over, have a couple of little time wasting conversions I've done:

A scratch built flying car ^_^

And a post-apoc bluesmobile police vehicle (yes, I know, it's not a faithful recreation. I already have the real Bluesmobile somewhere)
The figures next to it are VERY WIP, they've had some block colours put on them, and that's about it.

It looks like I never posted a final image of how this turned out. I'll dig through my files and find a photo of the final product from somewhere.

Here's the most recent project though, a coffee shop converted for selling guns. ^_^

I thought this would help me work through my bitz box of random junk, but it hasn't even scratched the surface of the weapons pile.
There's a few more images in my gallery of the building and some of the details.

Now, I'm going to start hunting for that finished picture of The Stacks for you.

Your Stacks piece is amazing and original. I’m also very impressed with the detailed interiors of your buildings. The posters and shelves look great but my absolute favorite is the industrial suit hanging on the wall. You have a lot of realism with these details.

Updates, New Bits and Finished Pieces!

I finally managed to get to my club recently and snapped some pics of my terrain.

Here are the finished images of my Stacks project. There's loads of little bits of extra detail in there (a small meth lab, for example) which is easy to miss in the pictures.

In addition I've got a few other bits.

The is the Watch Tower, a piece I made several years ago for a desert worms/star ship troopers style game.

This is a silly bit of terrain. A small bit of scatter that can be placed against the side of a building to make it climbable.
I was going to make a few different ones but then I got distracted by the following model.

Nohgud'd Farm and Grill
This is your regular old post-apoc butcher's shop/restaurant. The perfect place to unwind with a glass of moonshine and take some weight off after a day of pillaging in the wastes.
(also, there's a cat in there somewhere)

There's more pictures in the gallery, but not many (sorry about the pic-heavy post)
