I've been anxiously awaiting the Custodes codex for some time. Now that it is here, I feel a tiny bit of disappointment. While I am very please with what we got, it feels a little barren. Since GW included the Contemptor and the Land Raider it is obvious that they are more than willing to include kits that were originally meant for other ranges. So, with that in mind, I was half expecting GW to rebox the AoS Gryph-Hounds from the Stormcast Eternals as a Custodes unit. Something like them are all ready in the fluff of 30k, they are generic enough that they aren't obviously a solely AoS unit, and (most importantly) they are all ready produced by GW.

If this was a fast-attack unit for Custodes it would be a good way to fill up the Fast Attack slot, which currently only has one choice. It would also be a good way to have more bodies to the Custodes, and allow them to take on hordes a tiny bit better. I see them as a slightly heavier version of Fenrisian Wolves.

Here is what I am thinking:

M10 Ws 3+ Bs- S4 T4 W2 A3 Ld5 Sv4+

5-10 per squad, 15 points each.

Definitely a viable alternative to the Jetbikes

Wait... are you suggesting a m10 t4, 2w, 4+ model costs 15 points? WTF.

Well, it's basically a Space Wolf cyberwolf, just in a unit. Those are only 15 points. I guess as a unit it would be more potent. Perhaps 17? After all Fenrisian Wolves are close to those stats and only 6 points.

So I just looked up the datasheets and point costs. Cyberwolves are indeed that stat line (-1 Ld) at 15 ppm. Pretty ridiculous. I didn't realize space wolves had such a spamable durable unit with 3a -1ap and 1 dmg weapons.

By comparison, ripper swarms are
6m/5+/5+/3/3/3/4/4/6+ for 11ppm. with ap0 1dmg weapons.

at +4 points you gain 4m +2 ws +1t +1 str -1W +2sv and a point of ap.

That doesn't seem right at all.

Wow, rippers really seem like junk. Can they at least have easy access to buffs or some kind of fearless?

Anyway, What do you think for a custodes unit? Too silly?

Flesh hounds are the same cost (15ppm)

But instead of +1atk and the 4+ save. They instead get:

Ld 7,5++, deny 1 power

Soo... yeaa.. i would say that sounds about right

edit: Forgot they got their khorne power (+1atk & str when charging, charged, intervene)

When it comes to Gryph Hounds in these proposed rules, I think they should never be able to claim objectives, nor use a majority of the other custodes rules.

While the Jetbikes are good, I could see using a unit like this to try to swamp an enemy horde blob with a bunch of spammable attacks. At 15 points per model they aren't exactly cheap, but compared to a 49 point Custode they are.

Gathering the Informations.

Speaking as someone who has a ton of experience with Gryph-Hounds in AoS...they're not meant to be used as a 'swarm' unit.

The basic Gryph-Hound in AoS?
It's 40 points per Gryph-Hound. They start at units of 1 and get up to 12.

I would sincerely just take the stat-lines and the rules from AoS and port them over. A unit that can engage and fade out, nipping at the heels(so to speak) of a unit in advance of a Custodes strike and granting them an early warning ability to deep striking units would be huge.
