This thread was inspired by a friend of mine telling me that The Shape of Water was a good date movie.

So, what do you think are the best date movies?

For me, the The Princess Bride must be the pinnacle of date moviedom. It has everything. Who doesn't like The Princess Bride? Someone you shouldn't date, that's who.

Runners up include Secondhand Lions for the love story, and Barbarella.

Valhalla Rising is my best go to movie for a date with my woman. A great film, that or Sigurd Drakedreper( A Norwegian film)

Valhalla Rising, seriously? I like it too but I'd be single forever if I take a girl watching this movie for a date

I'd say La La Land, it's even my avatar. Drama, Romance, Comedy, Music and lots of tears at the ending. What else do you want? Another great option could be Silver Linings Playbook.

First film I watched with my girlfriend was Alien. The next one was Aliens.

My last girlfriend had never seen any Star Wars film. Answered that question really.

“Good people are quick to help others in need, without hesitation or requiring proof the need is genuine. The wicked will believe they are fighting for good, but when others are in need they’ll be reluctant to help, withholding compassion until they see proof of that need. And yet Evil is quick to condemn, vilify and attack. For Evil, proof isn’t needed to bring harm, only hatred and a belief in the cause.”

My wife hadn’t either. I sat her down in front of them, and she enjoyed herself thoroughly (except we both disliked the newest one; me moreso than her).
She preferred Stardust over Princess Bride though. I’m pretty sure she’s messing with me (although Stardust was a good “clone” of TPB).
Next up is Sharknado for her (she said we can watch it this weekend)!

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Battleship.

Either a woman knows a movie is absolutely terrible and still love watching it, or she still has taste and will never go out with me

We didn't watch it together (because long distance relationship) but she watched Teeth on my advice. She loved it .

Last date movie we saw was Hostiles. Nothing says romance like multiple old west gunfights!

Hmm. My girlfriend at the time forcibly dragged [b]me[/b ]to 300, Twilight (though I was explicitly allowed to make snarky MST3k comments for the duration of that) and tried to get me to watch her copy of the first Transformers film, but I feel asleep half way through.

Take that as advice or a warning, as you like.

My fiancee prefers horror and violent movies or absurd comedies over girly movies. She still likes them, but she'd much rather sit down and watch Alien, Predator or Hot Fuzz.

Our first date movie was Wanted, though we both hated it. Second was Pineapple Express, which we both enjoyed.

Lol I can't even get my family to watch Valhalla Rising...let alone a GF. Should make it a double feature, Valhalla Rising and Hobo with a Shotgun back to back. If she doesn't run for the hills then you might have a keeper. Early into a relationship i'd have to make sure she likes Blade Runner. I pretty much live and breathe that movie, it's almost a hobby for me itself...if she hates it...then she hates me.

Love, Actually. Hands down. Chased with Notting Hill. Both are good, but Love, Actually just goes above and beyond. It also has Laura Linney in a role that should have nabbed her an award. Seriously, if you aren't totally crushed by the end of her arc, then you are a soulless automaton.

We'll find out soon enough eh.

Wait, people still buy into the whole thing with "special" movies for dating? Weird. I've always found it easier to just date people with similar taste in movies.

But, if you really must - go to a horror film. Human brains are stupid enough that they'll take any series of adrenaline/fight or flight reactions while in the company of another person as being real shared adversity and so will likely heighten or reinforce any feelings you have for each other afterwards.

I need to acquire plastic Skavenslaves, can you help?

Whilst I love The Princess Bride I'd argue that Stardust might, from a certain point of view, be the better film (disclaimer my insight into dating and 'that sort of thing' is almost pure theorycraft)

The handbrake turn is like a metaphor for your relationship strategy. Will she break the laws of physics and agree to a second date?

Thats a gamble, as there are more gak quality horror movies out there than quality ones.

With a cliched rom-com, you know what you are walking into.

Also, in reference to this threads premise, if you are over 20, go to a play or live musical for a solid date night. The crowds are generally more mature, the venues are cleaner, usually cheaper*. And it makes you look classier. Always a winner when I was dating.

*YMMV, depending on the show and location. Some of the bigger, more mainstream shows are expensive as feth.

Doesn't actually matter if it's good or not, just whether it will make you both jump out of your seat a few times. Unless your date is a veteran horror aficionado, I'd imagine even the pretty bad ones will get them on jumpscares.

In general this is probably good advice, but for me personally I'd rather chew off my own fingers than watch musicals in any format, and is there really any point to plays any more except for those occasions when going to watch an arthouse foreign-language film isn't quite snobby enough?

Heh, my wife always watches this one when it comes on. Despite the fact I also bought her the movie on disc.

Same with Pitch Perfect and the sequel, The Heat, etc....

For our third or fourth date we went and saw Robin Hood, the Russel Crowe version. She picked it so afterwards I felt obligated to pretend I liked it. Life went on, we got married, had kids, still together, and about three months ago Robin Hood came on tv. I mentioned that I thought it was actually pretty crappy, and only said I liked it because she picked it. She said she only picked it because she thought I'd like it, thought it was average and said she just went along with me when I said I liked it.

So there you go. Sit down with your partner to watch Robin Hood. Then lie to each other for 8 years. Works great.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”
