How do?

So I’m guessing by now you’ve seen that Squats are sort-of returning, with another Ab-Human Bounty Hunter. And it’s a Squat. Hooray and huzzah!

But it has got me thinking. As impressive as GW’s turn around over the past year or so has been, they haven’t half been going for the low hanging fruit.

See, I’ve been around a while in the Hobby and indeed online. And all the stuff we’re seeing to date has been a guaranteed crowd pleaser (even if they’re not to your personal taste. I’m using broad brush strokes here). Literal ‘idiot’ level decisions to get good will sparking,

Let’s have a very quick roll call.

Primarchs In 40k? Check.
Chaos Legions getting individual Codecies? Check.
Necromunda? Check.
Blood Bowl? Check.
Adeptus Titanicus? Check in priniciple!
Custodes? Check.
Regular FAQs? Check.
Far quicker release schedule? Check.
Periodic rules errata, properly published? Check.

That’s an awful lot of wishlists from the past couple of decades now granted. Again, this isn’t ‘ZOMG AND TEHY R PERFECTS!’ - just an acknowledgement that they’ve been hauling bottom with stuff many have craved for a long time.

But what’s actually left once this wave of goodwill recedes? Fan as I am, it’s bound to happen sooner or later? What long wanted things can they pull out their bahookie for a quick game of ‘Look At The Monkey’? All the low hanging fruit seems to be gone, barring deeper delving into the Specialist Games bin?

Vigo. Spain.

Nostalgia can only go so far. Then they'll need to make genuine new things, like they are doing with AoS, with Kharadrons, Shadowspire, etc...

So I don't think GW is just breaking the glasses until theres nothing left, they are still making new stuff.
But this kind of thing is needed when you are to have a big turn in your company/product after a bad time. For example World of Warcraft, making Daemon Hunters playable after the horrible expansion that was WoD.

So posting here becomes more masturbation than conversation.

Probably work

There's always going to be more. Bunch of old kits still need to be updated. Also, full plastic ranges of guardsmen would keep them busy for a while.

Yep, range updates (such as Eldar aspects, plastic SoB) could give them fuel for a few years to come.

And people will beat down their door for 40K 8.1, “we corrected all your datasheets with most recent FAQs, now buy new codexes” will keep them busy for the remainder until they spring 9th version in 2019 or 2020.

Squats? Arbites? Mordheim? Return to the old world? Inquisitor? Hrud? Demiurg? Warmaster? Return of Epic? Aeronautica Imperialis? Man O'War? Battlefleet Gothic? Space Hulk's return + Genestealer expansion? There's enough material above for at least another 5-10 years worth of production and that's just scratching the surface. They're doing the right thing at the minute, tapping into nostalgia that is also appealing to newer gamers

The commitment to errata and balance changes and the release schedule pacing are both things, that if kept up, will be an essential part of the relationship between GW and their customers. If they aren’t just a marketing ploy to smooth the transition between 7th and 8th, then in essence GW is promising to keep the game from getting stale or unbalanced, which is a promise that many games have to make to ensure success. That isn’t low-hanging fruit, it’s an ongoing time and energy sink. We may see GW return as a harbinger of quality in the wargaming market again. As for the Specialist Games time will tell if they’re a goodwill ploy or a genuine attempt to branch out.

Anyway, at this rate if they space out their crowd-pleasers then they’ll have enough time to create new obvious problems that they can easily solve when they need to get the hype flowing again.

They are really trying to bring old timers back into the hobby with the nostalgic releases, its certainly brought me firmly back to GW from my meandering in other game systems.

Zedmeister has hit the nail on the head in terms of other items they can still tap into.

I think the biggest thing is warhammer community and actual engagement with people backed up with actual output.

Naturally they have gone for the big hitters first and the proof will be in the eating when it comes to longer term support of Blood Bowl/Necromunda.

Heres hoping! one thing for sure, I actually open e-mails from GW now half expecting a pleasant surprise.

I wonder what will happen once the codexes are all released and we have a lull in activity.

I agree with Galas that eventually GW will have to release some new things. Right now everything is exciting as we're getting these releases super quick and with little downtime to consider it all.

Perhaps after the codexes are released the model releases will start in earnest.

No, you'll just get the next again codex, most likely space marines.

Age of Sigmar is a wacky setting and they could endlessly keep adding and making new things for it. But as more and more stuff comes out, at some point you will see certain things go bye bye.

The support of their specialist games in the coming years will definitely show GWs true colors though.

Space Marines are left and will be there forever. There's always something new to add and now they kinda reset the whole faction with their bigger marines. Over times all the old stuff will be replaced with new Marines. That'll take time and I think the same will happen to chaos just without official lore upgrades. They will just get bigger marines with better rules (because: "they are 10000 years old after all and finally as strong as they should be") and in a decade or two we'll have a full set of (chaos) marines (and all their existing and still to be developed sub-factions) in the new scale and all the old/small marine stuff will be kind usable as a legacy army (or something like that).

Marines are their biggest seller after all. All the stuff you mentioned in the first post is kinda insignificant in comparison to marines and it's useful to create little bumps between marines, marines, and more marines. And by then they will have enough cool old stuff to recycle and redo again (in two decades there will be a new Necromunda, Mordheim,…). It's a never ending cycle as GW has enough IP to either reuse it every few decades or to expand a bit in some unexplored direction.

I'm thinking that a lot of these things that 'people have been begging for' aren't doing so well, and that maybe the 'demand' is more talk than buying power. The Necromunda stuff sold very little in my area, and traveling about- I saw most of it rotting on the shelf and collecting dust.

Kinda funny how many people pissed and moaned about Primaris Marines and Custodes, and these are moving but these 'totally awesome' things like Necromunda and Blood Bowl just... aren't.

Keeping this in mind, I'm not sure 'Epic' and 'Gothic' are going to do well.

IMHO, I just like some of the games that incorporate existing models from 40k and AoS.

Warhammer Quest was awesome, Silver Tower being especially genius. Would love to see a 40k version.

I'd also love to see Inquisitor get a reboot, but using standard model scale.

Shadow War was pretty okay, some rules were dumb but could be houseruled away. Would like to see a version that incorporates more unit types.

Also, would love to see a small-scale 'squad' game from Horus Heresy.

Mob Rule is not a rule.

I'd say they have plenty left in the tank if they do it right - they have more than enough "must have" stuff which needs re-doing or updating. By the time they address it all, the stuff they've already re-done will need another edition/version.

When all else fails, turn on the Primaris tap. That range (without argument) will replace the full Space Marine lineup eventually. That's 2-3 years of continual releases and new stuff if they wanted it.

Actually they're arguably bigger/stronger now than they have been in the past. There is far more competition in existence, but there are almost zero companies on the GW level for miniature wargaming.

There are other large gaming companies (Days of Wonder, Fantasy Flight, Wizkids, etc.), but for predominantly miniatures wargaming, GW is still the massive leader. Whether they deserve to be is an entirely different discussion.

I think they've used a large chunk of ideas/releases that were stored away incase things started to get grim. Now they've released a load of them and profits are up, they'll keep the remaining 'wish list' stuff stored away incase of another profit slump.
I think they'll be saving other primarchs and things like squats till the next slump in sales and they need to bring out the 'big guns'

As far as I am concerned, I don't care how much stuff they re-release from GW's golden past; if they keep changing the scale of the new stuff, I'm not buying it. I don't suppose I am the only one to feel this either.

looking at the massive hike in profits (despite stuff like the start collecting boxes meaning you can get more stuff for less money now) I'd say that local variation aside pretty much all the new stuff they've done is selling well

Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

I think just the Demi-God units from each factions (Primarchs, Avatars, some massive Ork Boss, some Tyranid super Nid, etc.) alone would keep new releases going for a decade or two.

On top of that you'll get more legion, chapter, etc. specific codices, updated models for certain neglected armies, one off new units and (if they get in a slump) release a new army: dark mechanicus, those dinosaur Eldar or even Squats.

And I'm sure there's a lot more stuff they could do that I haven't thought about.

Once the existing armies are all Codexed up, then there's time for them to expand and diversify. Battlezone books, expanding the different battlezone rules from a couple of pages each into a full book for Cityfight, Planetfall, etc. Campaign books like the old Armageddon and Eye of Terror books.

I'd like to see some more material specifically for Open or Narrative Play - campaign books would the for that, obviously, but things like an expanded set of vehicle customisation/design rules, a campaign system. Things that aren't for competitive play, but would be interesting and fun nevertheless.

That may have more to do with execution and business model than the interest of players. I've played Necromunda since it's first release and was hyped, but haven't bought any of the new stuff since I'm not a fan of using boards in place of terrain, I don't want to get 5+ books spaced out over 2 years when my existing game covers all that material in 2 books, and the rules for my favorite gangs aren't even out yet. Not a huge reason for me to run out and spend money.

People not running out to see the Psycho remake didn't mean that people aren't interested in horror movies - it's just that a disappointing remake has less appeal when people have easy access to the original.

At any rate, they're still releasing stuff I like at a fast rate than I'm able to paint, so I'm content with the current direction even if not every nostalgia product hits the mark.

It's interesting because I am impressed with GW's effort in releasing newer games, and I love the terrain they are selling now too, but I haven't been buying. The truth is, I am burned out over keeping up with all of the new editions of 40k or even what was WFB over the years. While they do produce some excellent quality in terms of figures and models, I am not finding myself really blown away by the designs (Primaris, Nugle). And some of the more interesting armies that they have released really don't have a lot of models to them, so I don't find anything exciting with the variety either.

I went thru all my 40k stuff some time ago, and really cleaned out a lot. I decided to keep 40k 3rd and 6th. I kept 3rd because I pretty much had the minis in the army lists that came in the rulebook, and 6th, which I thought was a pretty cool box set (I have the limited set, and even bought the novella for it). I have to admit, 7th really pissed me off. I also have to admit, I am one of those guys that loves starter sets. They are what tend to get me into the hobby. Especially those with a story and scenarios to go with it. And for them to just recycle the 6th set I thought was lazy and uninspiring. And right out of the gate I disliked Primaris Marines, and wasn't crazy about the Nurgle minis, although I do like them as an army, so I haven't bought 8th.

Necromunda looks promising too, and I am first and foremost an Epic fan, so I have been curious about the new AT, but if they focus only on titans without immediate plans to release infantry and titans, I wont be interested.

I think part of the problem for me is White Dwarf too. For a long time that was a GREAT magazine. In recent years, it seemed like a waste of money. Now I know people would argue this is better and more fair, but I used to appreciate the new rules and forces that they would release in it. Sometimes they were just pulled from a rulebook, but other times they were new, and it made for exciting reading. It seemed that GW decided that it was better to keep everything in rulebooks so people weren't confused and annoyed with rules being all over the place, which I can completely understand. But what I found that if they did that, that it meant that these stand alone box sets that were released wouldn't have additional articles for them, beyond the intro and a battle report, and it just seemed like a waste. So its prevented me from buying these sets.

Now, I havent seen a WD in quite sometime, so I have no idea if they are still doing this, or have implemented new characters, rules, scenarios for their games. But I do miss WD driving the hobby so to speak. But I also just don't play these games like I used to.

So that being said, I don't feel inspired to buy a lot of the new GW army stuff. If I do buy anything, its more to enhance what I already have.

Ha, just realized my post is pretty much the opposite of what Asmodai is complaining about.

As a counterpoint, meaningless as it is, GW has had a resurgence among my friends and I. A few years ago, we were playing Dropzone Commander, Infinity, Warmachine and a few others. Now? 40k and Age of Sigmar.

I'm not sure how many new armies we've started, but at least in my case that's because I'm skint, not because there's nothing I want to buy.

Still waiting for a re-release of BFG, plastic sisters, possible new races based on old lore (Zoats, Hrrud, exodites, ect.) also hoping they update their inquisitor game to 28mm and a more simplified approach (not holding my breath) I think GW still has plenty in their tank after all their specialist games are released.
