I came up with an idea to play Warhammer 40,000 with a game master and army progression with house rules with friends. A miniature wargame with rpg elements. I was told Warhammer 40k Rogue Trader. My friend has Shadow War: Armageddon and I wanted to be a custom game master with kill teams that would play against player's kill teams. There would be an advancement after completing objectives such as points to add to the kill teams of the players. The game master would adjust their kill teams against the players a session and would attempt to balance rewards for the players. Has anyone attempted this or have any advice? Thanks.

That sounds like tons of fun, although Necromunda might be better since it has a slightly more expansive experience and campaign section, Shadow War should work fine as well.

You could make the advancement of the kill team members a bit slower to make the campaign last a little longer, or work it into a campaign map, with each team fighting for control of key areas of the map split up as areas they can control.

Agreed that Necromunda might be a better base for this, with its experience rules and all.

And the upcoming Ulysses RPG, Wrath and Glory, will be an even better one later this year.

Thank you for the positive feedback! My friends prefer the Warhammer 40,000 armies to the Necromunda gangs. I could potentially implement Necromunda rules into our house rules campaign. We play Deathwatch and may play Wrath and Glory when it comes out. Thanks for the advice for slow

advancement. Perhaps I could start the players less than 1000 point kill teams each against the game master's combined kill team point value of less than what the players' points are combined. I could slowly increase the game master's kill team points as the players progress. A friend always

wanted a miniature wargame rpg and enjoys aspects of roleplaying supplementing campaigns. Shall I possibly add role playing in between missions? For example an Aspiring Champion sees a Chaos Cultist favoring Slaanesh over the others in an undivided legion before a briefing and executes

him. An Exalted Champion sees this in action and is pleased and rewards the Aspiring Champion with a chain sword. I would attempt to place limits on these encounters for balance issues perhaps. Mid to late campaign when more comfortable with balance adjustments I could add custom wargear

and add models to the game like Khorne Berserkers with chain axe options with house rules point costs. Thanks for the feedback so far. Welcome for more suggestions.

I would also look into the Heralds of Ruin Kill Teams rule set, it is pretty dang good, and offers a decent campaign section that is a bit more expanded than the Shadow War: Armageddon book.
