I'm really looking forward to this game. Anyone else? Should we start our own Dakka pirate fleet?

I totally missed the free beta, but I've been watching lots of videos.. looks like a really fun game, but one that you really need to have friends on the same crew to make it really fun.

It's a multiplayer pvp questing kinda game. You can play solo or duo on a small ship, or 3-4 people on a large ship. You get quests to go out and recover pirate booty to earn gold to upgrade yourself or your ship, killing other pirates and sinking their ships and stealing their booty along the way.. then rinse and repeat, and drink some grog inbetween.

It's an Xbox exclusive, and will have a PC version, both can play together on the same servers which is kinda cool

Unfortunately the 1-2 player ships seem like suicide, at least from the videos I've seen.

I dunno, I've seen some videos of 2-man crews sailing circles around big galleons and sinking em fast. Just depends on skills I guess. I think/hope there is gonna be matchmaking where you can just join any 4-man crew, they did say 2 and 1 man ships are a bigger challenge.

This is how I expect public 2 man ships to go.

I'm going to be playing with my GF most of the time, in the same room, me on the PC and her on the Xbox. I already know she's going to be the one steering while I do everything else.. just like real life :p

Apparently there's an open beta this weekend. Gonna download it and try it out

I've already pre-ordered it for my Xbox.

I was sold as soon as I saw you could be shot out of a cannon to board another ship.

Played for a while, pretty fun but it's one of those games where you relly need a mic to communicate. And I don't have one :( might run to best buy and see if I can get a cheap one.

They really aren't. They have the Galleon beat on speed and maneuverability pretty easy. If you can keep your distance and keep the Galleons crew off your ship, you should be fine.

I played the Stress Test a few weeks back and this past Open Beta and I had a blast both times. My group of friends had so many playing we were running multiple ships, drunkenly talking like pirates as we blasted each other out of the cannon.

It was amazing.

Edit: Also, I realize that is pretty anecdotal, but having been on a four man Galleon while fighting another Galleon and 3 other Sloops out in the battle, I can say I would rather fight a Galleon than a Sloop 100% of the time.

So I decided to invest in a XboneX, picked it up at best buy, and they gave me a code to download Sea of Theives for free. So, I'll be checking it out after all once I get it downloaded

Is there anything different that wasn't in the final beta?

I still don't have a mic though, in the beta I felt like I needed one. My old mic broke, and the X didn't come with one.. which I thought was kinda dumb since it cost $500..

From what I’ve seen it’s quite shallow (excuse the pun)

Gorgeous to look at though.

Yeah that's kinda how I felt about the beta. Either way, it should be worth the price I paid (nothing) so I'll try it out from time to time.

Seems the biggest complaint is there's no real progression in the game, other than cosmetic items. I guess that kinda thing works in games like Overwatch, but not so much here.

Personally I would have rather had a PvE kind of game with 4 people going on quests together, where you level up and get tougher along the way.. and the quests get tougher too. You could still have special raid quests or pvp zones too. Or maybe something like a pirate version of a game like Destiny.

It's actually really fun to play as well. It has some glaring issues, being shallow and all, but the ship mechanics are a lot of fun. Even going solo on the sloop is pretty fun. Easy to use. When you become a Pirate Legend you are supposed to get a cool pirate hideout, not sure what is going on there though.

I'm having loads of fun, and I'm still waiting for the rest of my friends to get this game, so that we can get some actual co-op going on.

Tried it out, seems OK so far. Going to have to go get a mic though. I did some quests with a full crew, then I did a few solo ones on a little boat. Was out looking for chickens when I stumbled upon the Chest of 1000 Grogs, got lots of cash for that.. but it was tough, cuz as soon as you pick it up, you're like falling over drunk. Just trying to get it down the steps of my little sloop was a chore, then I realized I had to get it back up somehow.

Never did find those chickens...

The Chicken/Pig/Snake spawns are all static. There is a map floating around the subreddit with all the spawns, raid/forts, and ports marked on it.

You can typically find chickens and pigs on the larger non-fort islands, some might have chickens or pigs but there are quite a few that have both.

Having a blast but my friends are all playing FarCry 5 now so im a pirate without a crew. If anyone needs a not-so-salty pirate let me know mic or no-mic.

In your base, ignoring your logic.

Been enjoying most of my experiences, save for the few times I've gotten chased for a few hours over some really stupid stuff. Like seriously you're going to chase me for an hour just because I've got two chickens?

That being said joining in a Galleon while a solo player kind of sucks, there's a good chance you'll be thrown into the brig for no reason. However, while in the brig you still get full rewards and payments for whatever gets done or turned in.

Isn't it somewhat ironic that a game about sailing the ocean is about a shallow as a dried-up puddle?

Every time I try and get on a 4-man crew, there's usually just 1 guy there getting drunk in the tavern instead of doing quests, or just a bunch of people doing nothing. I get more done soloing quests on a sloop by myself, but that gets kinda boring. I've mostly been doing the order of souls skull collecting quests though. I don't really enjoy running around trying to collect chickens.. guess I'll never be a pirate legend with that attitude.

Me neither....originally, i thought the idea with the Merchant Alliance was going to be great, after all, the overseas trade of the 15th to 19th centuries were a bloody, but interesting time, so there is a lot of things to build upon. Even the ships alone during that time, they pioneered advancements in technology for 400 years. Naval science was cutting edge technology back then, equivalent to space programs today, probably even bigger. So when I realized it was all just animal collecting, I was more than disappointed, I thought I could be a privateer, or a merchant marine. I'm hoping they implement something with the spices, sugar, and tea leaves, and I hope they add a trading system with consumption and production economies, and investments too.

I'm hoping they add some real content to it, and turn it around and make it awesomer like games like the Division did. Till then I'll probably just dip my toes in once in a while. Makes me sad though, I was really looking forward to this being an awesome piratey game.

https://www.seaofthieves.com/news/top-feedback-points

Hi, with Sea of Thieves having been out for just over two weeks now, the team has been hard at work ensuring everything is behaving as expected, but we've also been gathering the top feedback points on the current game experience. We have been discussing these at length, figuring out solutions and getting work underway. Some issues are easier to solve than others, whereas some will require more involved fixes and take a little longer to get out to our players.

Below are the top feedback points and our current plans to address them. As with everything on Sea of Thieves, we will make changes, get them out to players and assess how effective they are, using feedback and data to decide whether we need to take more steps. Our priority is always to work out what can we do to address issues quickly, and then if we need to spend more time on them for a more involved fix, we will invest that time and effort.

Ship respawns

When you sink a ship, they respawn too close to you. This can be frustrating for players at a Skeleton Fort, or constantly having the same ship follow you and engage you in combat.

Complete: We have pushed the distance back that ships respawn at so they are out of view of the ship that sunk them. This is pretty much double the original distance that ships were respawned at. This change is in the game update that went live on Wednesday April 4th.

Work in progress: We are also working on having this configurable in the service, rather than in the client, meaning we will be able to adjust this further live based on player feedback.

Spawn-killing

Players can get stuck in a die-respawn-die cycle if another crew stays around on their ship.

Work in progress: A short-term mitigation for this is to make more players aware of the Scuttle option as a way of getting out of this scenario. We are adding information on this to the loading screen on the way back from the Ferry of the Damned, and also adding a reminder on the Ferry of the Damned itself that this option is available.

Our plan is to measure whether this makes a significant difference. Are people using the Scuttle option more, is it a solution that works for the majority of scenarios? We'll assess this before taking further steps.

Investigating: We are also considering options around moving ships to other world instances if they are caught in a griefing situation. This is a slightly more complex change, so we are currently investigating this to understand exactly what it would take, and the value.

Brig abuse

Players are misusing the brig for various reasons. The most common of these we have seen are to hold a slot, either because they want to play as a private crew or because they want to play with people with mics/people speaking the same language.

Work in progress: A key change we are working on is to allow players to select whether they want their ship to be open to others being matchmade with them, or closed so that it's invite-only. This will allow players to manage how many people they want on their ship, invite friends and decide whether or not to allow other players to join them. We hope this mitigates one of the key reasons for people misusing the brig. It also has the added benefit of allowing players to sail the galleon with a smaller crew if they desire, or the sloop with a larger crew. We've had a lot of feedback and requests for this so we'll be very happy to deliver this functionality.

Finding a suitable crew

Closely related to the misuse of the brig, players don't really have any control over who they play with (apart from playing with friends). The key preferences we see are to play with other players using a mic, or to find people speaking the same language.

Work in progress: We are working on automatically matchmaking by microphone status. The game already detects if you have a microphone plugged in, and matchmaking will now prioritise matching you via your mic status.

Investigating: We will be adding the option to filter by language for matchmaking so players can find other players who speak the same language to crew up with.

Cheating

We have seen a few reported instances of cheating, where players are compromising the game client or using programs to gain an advantage over other players. Everyone should understand the seriousness with which we treat this, and anyone identified as taking part will have action taken against them, up to and including permanent Xbox Live account bans. We have a zero tolerance approach to this.

Investigating: We are investigating and have detected some instances of suspicious behaviour, and will be taking direct action against anyone abusing the game in this way. The number of people we are currently investigating who show suspicious behaviour make up an extremely small portion of our player base. Work is ongoing against this as a high priority, once we are certain we have identified people cheating we will swiftly ban them.

Content plans

We hear and understand that people are keen to understand what our plans are for updating Sea of Thieves, beyond the top experience fixes. We are currently in the midst of adjusting our roadmap based on feedback we have received since launch, with a ton of planning meetings continuing through this week. We plan to release a video next week updating everyone on how we plan to evolve Sea of Thieves moving forward. We totally understand that people want to see this ASAP, but the critical thing here is to have the right plan that allows Sea of Thieves to grow in the right way.

Thanks,

– Joe Neate, Executive Producer

New information released today and it looks like they are going to be releasing more information next week for content. Glad they are taking this pretty seriously, they have the mechanics of the game down pretty good. Now to just fix the bugs and add content!

Just released a roadmap for future content and a video talking about it. Looks pretty interesting and if they keep to the time table there will definitely be plenty to do.
