I have a 30k escalation league I'm planning on participating in, it's going to start at 500 points and grow like every month or so (enough time to do a big FW order I guess). I am a fan of the death guard so figure I'll give them a try in 30k since I enjoy their backstory. I have the legions red books and am going to order the new HH rulebook soon (maybe anything else I plan on expanding to soon, so I will need a shopping list )

I have a Prospero box to work with at the moment so thinking of what I could start out with. That probably means using Pride of the Legion so I can have a legal army. I plan to go Traitor, but ideally the force would be flexible enough I could play them as loyalist if I wanted to. I haven't thought of a real time period yet but I'm thinking at least around Isstvan V, either before or just after (not sure what others will be playing)

I would need a Legion Centurion w/Consul: Delgatus as my warlord to get the Pride of the Legion rite of war, so will probably have to kitbash him out of a sergeant or something from Prospero. Should I keep him cheap, say just artificer armour and a power sword (lightning claws don't seem like Death Guard's thing).

At 500 points I can take a 5-man legion veteran tactical squad with a weapon (not sure of which, heavy bolter maybe? I kinda have this idea in my head of this small force laying down suppression fire on a group of loyalists in a trench) and a sergeant with Artificer Armour and maybe a power fist, and a 5-man Terminator Squad (using Tartaros as that's what I have). Should the terminators have a mix of weapons? I'm not sure what special weapon to give them; plasma seems like it's always a good choice but plasma never seemed to fit Death Guard, maybe a heavy flamer and take the chem munitions upgrade being Death Guard gives me? Again, visually I see them storming a trench or a bunker or something where there's a squad of loyalists holed up. I only have the kit from Prospero though so that limits my options.

This leaves me with like 40 some points though I'm not sure what to add to (add some more men to the Veteran Squad for extra bodies?)

Any assistance would help. Ideally as things progress I plan to build towards The Reaping (or maybe Creeping Death) but starting off at such low points makes it hard to add anything I could really use later in the full army list.

The plastic Terminators aren't a great thing to use simply because they're stuck with powerfists on everyone; especially at low points levels one or two fists in a squad is sufficient for dealing with vehicles, while swords and axes are plenty for infantry and 5pts/model cheaper. I'd suggest dropping them for a Grave Warden or Deathshroud unit at your earliest convenience; both of the Death Guard unique Terminator units are really good.

(Ironically Deathshrouds are better in a Loyalist list than a Traitor list because that gets you Morturg, who always knows Endurance and can make them Infiltrate if he's your Warlord.)

For your 40pts I'd suggest grabbing a Rhino to stick the Veterans in; it makes them a lot tougher and the fire point goes well with a couple of suspensor-equipped heavy weapons. I run Death Guard with Pride of the Legion and three missile-armed Veteran squads (Machine Killers) in Rhinos a lot of the time in full-size lists; they're not enough of a priority to take any serious anti-tank firepower, too tough for incidental firepower to really threaten, and the missiles can seriously interfere with a lot of possible targets.

Huh? I presume you would want sword/p.axes instead then? As lightning claws it has plenty. Albeit that's extra 5 pts per model so that's that.

Though if you have some axes no problem getting axes if you want.
