Hi guys, just thinking its been years since ive been to a proper tournamnet and i fancy getting my aos army annihilated and posted back to me so im... tempted.... to go to the LVO next year...

Trouble is, its been a long time since ive been to a tournament let alone left the uk...

So couple of quick questions, as my google-fu is weak it seems...

1) will i be laughed out of the building if im not "super-no-friends" competetive?

2) whats the atmosphere like there?

3) anyone from the uk been before that can give even a rough estimate of how much it costs? (I know it depends on where i stay, how long for etc, just a vague estimate would be nice )

I have a few different lists im trying atm, might post them in the army list forum later ^_^

1) No. There are a lot of options at LVO to choose from. The Narrative or the 40k friendly might be what you're looking for.

2) High energy and friendly. Any grouchy people are simply hung over.

3) Las Vegas is expensive. I live close enough to Vegas to drive. So I spent around a $1000 US each year for room, food, etc. Although the first year I spent a lot more since it was my first time in Las Vegas.

I figure its gonna be expensive ^_^

But im thinking either tweaking my nurgle, khorne or ironjawz for aos to be competitive enough at tournament level.....

Or im currently painting an imperial fists pure primaris army that im sure is terrible but is really cool ^_^

But its just an idea im throwing around at the moment... its more likely ill end up at either the gt or throne of skulls in nottingham, thats a LOT cheaper amd only a couple of hours drive away... vegas would be amazing though

Agreed.
@mrspadge, even if you're in the Championship (the Big event) showing up with fluffy, baby-list is simply a smile, "good Luck" and a pleasant game. You'll head for the kiddie pool, where the water is fine (spoken like a 5 year veteran of it ).

Wow! You spent, Crimson Devil.

Lemme see how much I spent:
Room for 3 nights (Thursday-Sat) in Ballys. $450 ish, including $10 parking, per day (that's new this 2018 year). I skipped paying for room Internet and shut off the TV first thing. That price-tag got split with a roomie, though.
Beers were $8 ! FLG apparently negotiates the prices. Last year was 33% higher, and this year FLG put this out early, that the bar would be cheaper.

I went for a $38 fillet at Hex (restaurant) and ended up with a $76 bill there.
I spent nothing on GW stuff. Any stuff. I played.
My other expenses were food & booze. I'm pretty sure I spent less than $500 (remember, my roomie split the room and parking). Then again, I buy fillets and good whiskey.

Whereabouts in UK are you based mrspadge?

I only ask because a member of my local club (HATE in London) has been going regularly for the last 2-3 years and always seems to have a good time - so much so that there are rumours a group of us from the club might go next year.

It might work out cheaper as a group?

I've gone the last two years in a row, and it's great! I do not play competitively, and do not have any great skill. The first game or two on Friday, is usually full of try-hards. However, once you get past that, the rest of the weekend will be much, much better!

Also, Vegas isn't as expensive as people make it out to be, there are lots of great places to eat that do not cost you a fortune, and FLG has a room deal at Bally's which is really nice. My whole 5 day experience this year only cost me 500$ for a room.

SO far, the atmosphere has been great. You see a lot of people for sure, but 99% of them are very nice. Some great armies all around, and the convention staff are pretty friendly.

Very happy to hear everyone has had a good time at the event =)

@Mrspadge

You can make it work on pretty much any budget and you can play ultra competitive or ultra chilled out, just depends on what you want it to be.

Hope to see you there next year!

I heard several horror stories from my friends that went, but they were bringing competitive lists and were in the top half of players ranking wise, so I'm guessing that the bottom half is a much more fun place to be. From what I've gathered, if I were to go I would specifically avoid bringing my normal tournament list because the higher rankings seem to be ever more concentrated with TFGs the further up one goes. It's what I keep seeing at/hearing from two-day tournaments. May be a US culture thing, I dunno.

Edit: This was on the AoS side of things, didn't hear anything about the 40k side.

In case this is helpful, I spent less than $600 flying from Florida to Las Vegas for the LVO this year. But, it should be noted that I went as cheap as possible. Flight was about 350, and I spent 3 nights (Thursday/Friday/Saturday) in a Bally's hotel room split 4 ways. I also didn't buy any alcohol whatsoever, and didnt gamble so I kept some of the "optional" costs very low. Did go out to dinner one night, other than that bought food in the hotel. Bally's food is pretty damn expensive, I think I only had one meal under 10 even with picking minimalist food and water only as drinks. Brought a lot of food on the flight and ate in hotel room, cheap stuff like trail mix, poptarts, etc. Shared ubers with other people, etc. I stretched my college student budget as far as I could!

As to the fun of the event, I played 40k champs with a competitive list and had a blast, no disagreements with any opponents other than minor rules questions, certainly nothing that left a bad taste in my mouth other than my own tactical errors. Finished in the top 100 so wasnt playing in the kiddie pool, though I wasnt exactly playing top table either. Everyone in the upper-mid tables was very pleasant to face. Hope this helps!

Anywhere to avoid when booking a room?

It is honestly best to stay in Ballys for a number of reasons.

They have very affordable rates and the rooms are quite nice for what you pay.

You are close to the event! You do not want to be walking down the strip in Vegas with all your models if you can avoid it.

The vast majority of con attendees are also staying in Ballys, so it is easy to meet other gamers to socialize with and have fun.

We are obligated to fill a certain number of rooms and if no one booked there, the con would cease to exist, lol, so in staying there you help support the event.

Hope that helps!

I'm looking at coming this year. Going to be an expensive trip (theres just no cheap way to fly UK to Vegas.)

Does the room rate last just for the weekend?
I was planning on staying a few days before and after the event. Both to avoid Jetlag for the event and because hey, how often am I going to be in Vegas? might as well go out and have some fun with it.

Also anyone have any ingenious transport solutions? I tend to play horde armies, usually with two or three big models and I'm just not sure how to get a big daemons or tyranid army safely all the way there.

Room rate lasts for a few days before and after typically, yes.

The best bag for flying with an army I have every used is the Sabol Army Transport Motorpool. It may not fit your entire army but it fits in any overhead compartment I have encountered.

If not, you can check your army. Sounds crazy I know but Frankie and I fly for tournaments very frequently and we've both checked army bags on multiple occasions and if you pack the models securely (tissue paper in the foam covering models to keep them snug, etc.) we've only ever had very minor breaks at most, often nothing happens to the models.

If the air port lost my bag I would end up in Guantanamo Bay for sure though.

Ok so I suggest for a start you attend some tournaments in the UK to get some experience. UK gamers in the AOS scene have some of the best players around to help develop your skill. Plenty of upcoming tournaments, have a look at the TGA forum (google is) for tourneys, lists building advice etc.

1) You wont be laughed out, but It’s a long way to go if you just want to play for fun. I would consider getting a strong list and experience before you go, it’s no fun getting your ass handed to you after such a long trip.

2) The atmosphere is awesome, more so if you know a few lads going or know people there. I wouldn’t recommend going by yourself, there is a lot to do there (party in the evenings…you’re in Vegas baby!!!!)

Hope that helps.

That is really good advice, KillswithUK, although we do recommend staying at Ballys for a number of reasons:

1.) Convenience. You don't want to be walking all over the place carrying your army (and Hooters hotel is actually known to be one of the worst on the strip so that is funny that you liked it, but hey, knock yourself out, lol). Ballys is not that much more per night and you're in the convention.

2.) We have to book a certain number of rooms or the con suffers financially. If everyone went to another hotel we'd be toast, lol, and that would be the last LVO. You support the event by staying at the con hotel.

We fully understand that not everyone can for a number of reasons, but we do ask people to keep that in mind as often people don't know that fact so we like to be open and honest about it. If it saving just a few bucks, might as well stay at the con hotel for the ease of being so close to the event, not having to take a cab or uber to and from the event each day and to help keep the even healthy.

Thanks!

Ah, lol, well in that case I am glad you had fun! But yeah, Hooters is one of the--ah, shall we say least classy establishments on the strip in Vegas in regards to being a place to sleep, haha.

I've stayed at airbnbs the two times I've gone, and in truth, I'm planning on staying at bally's next year.

The airbnbs are cheaper, but like reese said, there is definitely a massive convenience factor for being able to just put your armies away at the hotel. Plus, you won't have to rent a car if you're flying in, as once you're on the strip, everything's pretty much walking distance or a short taxi ride.

There wasn't a thing wrong with my airbnbs, but the convenience of staying at the hotel is extremely tempting.

Yeah, and when you stay there you're more likely to interact with other con goers as you're all near one another.
