SCENARIO:
There is a piece of terrain that’s basically a piece of felt with nothing on it. Players agree it gives cover save, that’s it.

Turn five a charge is declared and the other player says its -2” to charge rule.

How would you handle this situation if you are the player who declared the charge?

D6, 4+ it's woods, 1-3 it's a crater.

yeah, you can't wait until someone charges across it to suddenly say it's difficult terrain. Settle that junk before the game starts.

Why would it be charge negative? you only said it gave cover, it could just be a cloud that is hard to see, you never said if it shared rules from the terrain rules section of the brb.

More of a YMDC thread but yes, if you discussed the terrain beforehand and decided it was a wheat field/tall grass (which would give cover to anything in it), then he doesn't just get to add a -2 charge caveat at his convenience.

Shrubbery, forests, heavy rubble, trash piles, and swamp/marsh would give a -2 to charge penalty.

Tall grass, knee high obstructions, or any kind of food crop would give cover but no movement penalty.

Sounds like edition lag, one guy forgetting only Woods give the -2" now, or just plain poor sportsmanship/cheating. If it ain't agreed, you can't spring it on someone mid-game.

Sounds like you should define your terrain beforehand. If you don't define it and it doesn't clearly correspond to exactly one listed terrain type either treat it as generic area terrain (cover for infantry, no movement inhibition) or ignore it entirely.

I don't like "4+ to resolve disagreements" in cases like this because it implies both sides have an equal chance of being right. Trying to impose additional terrain rules not specified beforehand on the battlefield isn't acceptable.

That said to Primark I would suggest going back and checking the wording of the discussion before the game. Did you define the piece of felt as "generic area terrain" or did you define it as "a crater"? Because a crater is a predefined type of terrain that exists in the rules and would give you -2" to charge, and if they told you it was a crater the whole situation falls under "ignorance of the rules is no excuse" and your opponent is reminding you of what you agreed on beforehand, not making things up.

There was no terrain on the felt.

Did you agree to count it as a crater or a wood?

If you did not define terrain rules it has no rules.
