I started in 40k about 25 years ago, just after the 2nd edition had been introduced. As luck would have it, I played very few games. That was mostly because, though I very much enjoyed painting characters and vehicles and doing conversions, I had a hard time bringing myself to paint the heaps of troops demanded by the 2nd and 3rd edition rules.
If I were to get back in to 40k, I know that I would need to start with an army that I could paint up to be truly beautiful without the monotony of painting the same model in a slightly different pose 3 dozen times.
I recently became aware of the detachment rules in the 8th edition. In particular, the super-heavy detachment, air wing, and vanguard detachments seem attractive to me. These seem like they would allow me to field an army of very high point value models with relatively little repetition.
I have some space marines, including a squad of close combat terminators and an as-yet unpainted land raider, but these are in relatively inaccessible storage. I like the idea of fielding an Imperial Knights super heavy detachment, backed by an air wing or a vanguard of terminators. I’m not familiar enough with the 8th edition rules and how they play to know whether this is a plausible strategy.
I think that, if I were able to field that sort of army, I might be able to add to it gradually as long as I could keep playing it in the meantime, without the hurdle of a big-bang of painting loads of troops in my way.
Does an army list of Imperial Knights backed by a space marine air wing make sense?

25 years ago was.... 6th edition?
Hmmm. It was released in 2012.
You mean Fantasy 6th edition?
That was 2000.
And, well, no.
But if you like the models,
then go for it!

For funsies its fine, although in objective grabbing missions Flyers can't take or hold objectives so a smattering of infantry is borderline compulsory (SM scouts maybe)
There is a junior Knight model on the horizon which may be preferable to flyers but both the plastic SM flyers are decent

Ah, so my thought of using a Vanguard detachment and Imperial Knights is more viable, then? I don’t want to go building up an army that has no hope of winning. That’s possibly worse than never finishing the paint job in the first place.
