I was a bit surprised there was no thread for this series but it is UK only at the moment, which helps explain it.

I was pretty excited to see a "pre-apocalyptic crime thriller" based on the idea that the world is going to end in five years, but the government is keeping it secret and only a couple of London cops have found out and need to work out what to do with the knowledge.

Without going into spoilers more than necessary, it has been a roller-coaster ride for me. I felt it flagged a bit in the middle, and got good again in the last two episodes.

Reviews have been a bit mixed. Some of them lament the number of unanswered questions at the end of the series...

Spoiler:
which apparently shows Hard Sun occurring early, which presumably destroys all life.

Other reviews praised the overall off-the-wall-ness of the whole thing. Definitely agree with that.

For certain it showed once again what a great shooting location London can be.

I liked both the main characters, but I thought the back-up police characters were great and would like to see them given more of an airing if there was ever a second series.

Seeing the way the last episode finished,
Spoiler:
it might be that there was never intended to be a second series.
In which case all those unanswered questions are just another symptom of the difficult situation modern life has got itself into.

We'll find out soon enough eh.

I read a review of the first episode that compared it with Luther and immediately put it in my "eh naw, yer a'right pal" pile.

When someone puts out a show about the Met that largely consists of middle-aged overweight arses fantasing about clubbing protestors and engaging in casual racism, I'll tune in, but they are perhaps the least convincing subject for any kind of "big damn hero" narrative I can think of, whether that's wrapped in a gun-happy pseudo-American-style cop drama or a sci-fi conspiracy wrapper.

I need to acquire plastic Skavenslaves, can you help?

I haven't seen Luther so unable to compare.

This show is about two thin, white young detectives without guns. One of them has got a taser, and his wife is black so I suppose he isn't a racist.

It's the sci-fi conspiracy wrapper that makes it interesting.

I really enjoyed Luther. But then, I'd watch Idris Elba in pretty much anything.

Put him, Tom Hardy and Karl Urban in one film, and I'll probably just watch that on repeat for the rest of forever.

Cheers for the tipoff KK - I was looking for something new to binge (despite being UK based, I don't watch terrestrial TV, on account no signal in my flat)

Also, Yodhrin - I'm afraid it doesn't look like The Bill is coming back any time soon. Worse, neither is Taggart. And I effing love Taggart.

I gave 'Hard Sun' two episodes and gave up. The 'pre-apocalyspe' thriller was a bait-and-switch title, it seemed to me. The characters were thoroughly awful and I felt no compulsion to get to know them. I rolled my eyes at the whole 'secret services are happy to stack a mile high pile of corpses to protect a secret' plot line. And I found it hard to believe that every government in the world was able to keep a lid on every science project that was studying the sun.

Frankly, I'm glad they're all going to die a horrible death....

I just can't take UK police shows that act like American police shows seriously. The first series was alright, a bit OTT but watchable, then it just proceeds to get more and more ridiculous until you're watching Bad Boys 3: This Time It's Laaaaahndan Innit and the whole thing becomes unintentionally hilarious in a cringey sad-funny way I can't watch.

Shall we stick to the topic?

You can open another thread to discuss Luther.

We'll find out soon enough eh.

We are sticking to the topic, unless drawing basic comparisons with similar established works to illustrate the reasons why we're not interested in the subject of the comparison has become against the rules somehow.

Your comparison of a show you didn't watch to a show I didn't watch is useless and spammy, when discussing the show we are talking about.

To be fair, its another show by the same writers, and Hard Sun was heavily promoted as 'from the creators of Luther' so its pretty relevant.
