I'm trying to figure out a fluffy weapon out loud for my Grey Slayers and I'm wondering if this is a good option? I've got one 10 man squad with bolters, CCW's, a powerfist, and a thunder hammer for the sargeant. I was thinking of running a 15 or 20 man squad with Combat Shields & CCW's, a couple powerfist and maybe a combimelta. The sargeant will have dual lightning claws. Thoughts?

Wouldn't do shields on everyone just the front rank of 5-10 slayers it's pricey.

You should squads of 20 have about half with just basic year to remove as casualties and give the rest costs swords or whatever you like.

I think whatever you arm them with is fluffy tbh, they're a legion specific unit so all their weapon options should be fluffy, they're not a generic unit to be made fluffy for a legion by taking specific weapon options to match the legion's style of warfare. Ultimately it's your army at the end of the day and you choose what you think is coolest or must fun however if you are looking for something that is fluffy and is going to be reliably good then keep them cheap with a focus on doing one job but doing it well.

I personally prefer mine with ccw, pistol and bolter (ala the classic grey hunter setup in 40k) with a vexilla (I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH BUT DO NOT GO WITHOUT THESE ON ANY SQUAD THAT CAN TAKE THEM, THEY ARE ABSOLUTELY WORTH THE 10 POINTS AND WILL MORE THAN LIKELY SAVE THE SQUAD FROM WIPING IN COMBAT OR FLEEING OFF THE BOARD) and cc orientated sergeant (single claw and artificer Armour) in a unit of 20 that way they can do stuff for the first couple of turns where they aren't likely to see combat but ensures that they are effective when they do reach combat. It keeps them cheap as well which I think is important as well as they are likely to die in droves and allows you to spend points on things that are frankly more exciting or useful.

Add power fists/claws to taste but remember that they do add up pretty quickly. I wouldn't bother with shields as you have breachers which do it better. slayers are 3+ Armour, one wound marines, a 5++ really isn't likely to save them from the likes of ap3 or better weapons (especially templates or weapons with high rates of fire such as the leviathan storm cannon) the points spent on shields would be much better spent on a speaker of the dead or apothecary to provide a 5+ fnp on top of the Armour save, making them more resilient to anything that isn't strength 8 or more. Things like plasma pistols, flamers and combi weapons aren't worth it as you want the slayers to see some cc as their legion rules and ROW if you use one of the SW ones benefit combat greatly and so you are better off spending the points on claws or fists to make them hit the little bit harder in combat.

I did shields because it looks cool not because it's super effective, I got some metal Viking ones to match the artwork of the burning of Prospero.

I do think you need some powerfists to add punch to the unit, sure it's not cheap but it'll let you kill units cc weapons alone won't scratch.

My mate does imp fists and uses the breacher rite of war and my slayers just bounced off without a reliable way to wound T5 guys.

We have one of the most flexible troop choices you'll find what works for you.
