A long time ago in a galaxy far, far, away...

Time to reboot and relaunch my hobby mojo - there are many half finished projects sitting in various boxes, all calling out for attention - so where to start? Why not with a new, shiny and clean blog? Yeah, that's the ticket...

And seeing as this is shiny and new, Nu'cromunda might as well feature heavily from the outset... Spoilered below are the initial steps I started last year to build Necromunda themed terrain, following the announcement of the games re-release - a multi-level refinery / storage facility, processing some unknown substance(s) that are no doubt highly toxic and dangerous to denizens of the underhive
Spoiler:

I was disheartened though with the MDF blocks, I had planned to cover them with thin card, but it was a tedious process, so I scraped this all off and instead built a plasticard shell to cover them and bring uniformity to the pieces.

Next steps will be stick these to the hardboard base (either with glue or wood screws), then add some detailing, pipes and cables.... Handily a 32mm base just about fits between each of these blocks (that was lucky planning...)

MDF is the devil. Seriously. It stands for Mephistopheles, Dispater, Focalar. True.

Lots of Necromunda stuff. Lots of good Necromunda stuff. You'll have to bring your A-game, Ruglud, which you would do anyway...

That central piece looks to be an old toilet part.

Looks like a good start Ruglud, you see why I make everything from plasticard.

Good to see you back and raring to go!

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far, away...

Thanks for the comments and encouragement, always welcomed

Well, the recent snowy weather in the UK managed to scupper some update plans this week, but as my part of the country has begun to thaw out finally, I got some work done today...

Here's a nice snowy picture (taken on Tuesday)
Spoiler:

And here's the update for today...

Added some drinking straws and recycled sprue on the base to make pipework connecting the storage tanks, also cut down a couple of the tanks as they were too large - will have some sort of pipework going to the central tank similar to the straw (this is not currently fixed and probably wont use a bendy straw for this... Using plastic milk bottle tops for the tops of the tanks - will add some extra details to these, similar to the top of the central tank. Also cut out a template to make a levelled walkway on the second level that will follow the shape of the CD trays - will then lay some cables on the trays, under the walkway. Also planning on LED lights under the tray to give the piece some light and a bit of in play atmosphere (may try and make the LEDs flicker if I can work out how to do that)...

That's it for today, need to buy some expanded aluminium sheet for the walkways now and figure out how to fix them...

Yep, for this build, MDF was not the way forward...

Will do my best, bit ring rusty, however I'm sure that will clear...

It's actually a load of cardboard circles stuck together with two KFC milkshake cup tops either end (see below) - but I did consider using a cistern float for this piece, just couldn't find one the right size or price.

Change of pace, as I do some work on the next LoER competition - haven't entered the comp for a while, so thought I'd give it a go this time...

Pictures not the best, but be interested to see if anyone works out what I'm making. Theme of this round: For the War Effort
Spoiler:
Theme: For the War Effort
By this I mean, I would like all of you to make terrain that would somehow be used to strengthen a military force, and could therefore also be a target of the opposing force. This could be a a huge martian manufactory, or just a grot sitting on a pile o' gunz. A supply cache, fuel/ammo dump, or a fort. If Fango hadn't already submitted that sweet Tyranid spawning pool for Comp #23, that would work for this, since it's creating troops. A warjack being built/repaired in a building, would work. A super weapon being unearthed, would be great too. Use your imaginations and creativity, and impress us all.

Emulate away... Just don't do it quicker then me

Update (crossposted over on the comp thread)

I created the pivot joint for the main beam, then added some extra structure to the engine room - will be adding a door on the rear. The black plastic parts are from some old broken toy cars that i dismantled a few years back...

Some progress on my nodding donkey.

Made and attached the 'horse head', then made a pair of counterweights and attached them to a wooden dowel that serves as a power shaft and runs through the motor housing. Spent a few hours for very little apparent progress... The 'walking beam' is not yet attached, hence the black electrical tape acting as a counterweight to keep it in place for the photos...

Next up will be the pitman arms and equalizer bar, then to figure out the well head... After that, I'll need to look at detailing (rivets mainly...)
and making it fit the Necromunda aesthetic...

For anyone interested, here's a couple of illustrations showing the mechanical parts of a pumpjack...
Spoiler:

As a separate note, if you like cosplay, and 40k cosplay at that - check this thread out over on the RPF. Seriously impressive, especially the 1:1 scale Grot...

Thanks Cam - more updates...

Some detailing on the building that houses the power unit. Door is a wee bit small for a Goliath, but then again, I doubt they would be the ones servicing this...

Have also started a new base for the whole piece. The pumpjack will be on a raised concrete plinth, with the well head at ground level - plan is to have a fence of some kind around the edge of the concrete plinth (safety first...), with some steps at the rear to access the building

Looking wonderful bud. Crisp details. Really great. I might be tempted to make it a slightly ramshackle corrugated steel fence or maybe make it look like hoarding panels. Rather than say a chain-link fence with razor wire. But I know you will do something brilliant anyway. Can't wait.

Funny how we all think alike... Given this is for Necro game use, cover and LoS blocking is on the list of must haves... And I just happened to acquire some corrugated card recently... just saying...

The raised plinth base is sized to allow the large Goliath base to fit round the building - just to watch out for the rotating counter weights - could 'ave your 'ed orf...

Had a crack at the safety railings - using wooden (bamboo?) food skewers - just not happy though with how this is looking, not the fact it's got a rustic wood look to it, but more that it's too 'chunky' for my liking.......

Time to rethink and redesign. I want something more modular really. Will probably make a jig up and using some fairly large gauge wire, soldered to resemble these:

Excellent pumpjack Ruglud! I agree that the wood isn't quite the look you'd expect there, more some metal posts with (s)crap nailed to them IMO

Yep - was going to paint the bamboo to resemble metal rails, but just too chunky, sooo...

Here's v2

5mm gauge wire (I think) bent into shape using a homemade MDF jig, the cross rails then soldered into place using the forementioned jig...
