Well darn, just can't help but load pics and share my progress. Blurry photos be damned! Eventually I'll get a cam but for now I'll do my best to take somewhat decent pics.

Anyways, let's start off with the Wraithlord I just did some decal reworking on. I have the rest of a SC box finished to this level, plus another War Walker and Wave Serve primed. I have a ton of Guardians headed my way and some will become Avengers and some Fire Dragons. Can't wait to kit bash up some Fire Dragons! They are the old school push fits, so they look quite striking next to modern Guardians.

Anyways, there is the WL. How should I base them? I was thinking an Admech style base with red dust would look prime. What do y'all think?

Here is the SC box ready to be based and sealed.

I'm thinking dusty red like Admech, or maybe something crazy like purple. I want to keep the bases relatively simple and easy to replicate so I've simply glued some fine aquarium gravel onto the bases and later on I'll get some fine sand to transition the gravel onto the bases better.

I'll post the Wave Serpent once I have some paint on it. The War Walker too!

Wave Serpent wip shot.

Kinda mad at the game store paint guy. I've been using Vallejo mecha primer and noticed it doesn't mix well with water. I couldn't find any MSP primer so I went with the mecha again. When I said I didn't like it cuz it didn't mix with water the guy told me not to thin it since it's for airbrushes.

So like an idiot I applied this primer straight onto the model and guess what? It pebbled. Just like you'd expect a paint to do when it's not thinned. So now I've put my first base coat of green on and now the pebbling shows even worse. So now I have to apply a hundred thin coats of green to the whole damn model.

Moral of the story, when you know better, don't doubt yourself. Always thin your paints. No matter what the shop hand says. He may have just wanted to sell me the fancy acrylic paint thinner, but still...

Anyways WS wip. Tried to take the shot from further back so it could focus better.

Man this cam...

So bad.

Holy feth.

Like why put a camera in a phone if it doesn't even work.

Tried to show the pebbling, but as per usual the photo comes out looking like gak. I swear it wasn't that bad on my phone display.

You know what fellas I'm actually pretty peeved with that game store employee. That primer was working fine thinned down with water, I just noticed it would get a funny sheen in the pallette once mixed. Models turned out fine, nice even coats, no adverse effects from being thinned with water that I could see, just the odd effect in the pallette. None of my previous paint jobs had any pebbling because I was thinning my paints. I don't know why I listened to that guy, I knew as I was priming the WS that I was doing it wrong and the primer was too thick but I figured he knew something I didn't. Maybe airbrush primer is different? Despite my own experience with the product I used it like a moron!

Now I'm stuck with a ruined fething paint job on a sixty dollar model because some noob wanted to sell me paint thinner. The fault is all mine I should have clued in when he tried to sell me a waterslide decal tray and softener. You might think the acrylic thinner was a no brainier but the dude told me to either use thinner or not bother thinning it at all since it was formulated for airbrushing. He also told me I could brush it on and that it was the best primer they had. So... Yeah, my bad for taking bad advice, but shame on the store for giving bad advice to begin with!

Do not, do not, make this mistake people, no matter what the "pro" at the shop says always thin your paints. If someone tells you to apply paint directly from the pot, smile and nod and either buy the thinner or get a paint that is water soluble.

Nerd raaaaaage! Haha!

Well I fixed up the tank with sanding and painting, so here it is with a few layers of dry brush and a black wash.

Also pictured is the new Walker who I've decided to do in a split colour theme after reading about how pilots get attuned to their craft. I figure each one should be different to reflect this. Kinda hard to see since it's just the green layer on there. I plan to do both models green layers first before doing the white that way I'm not touching up white which is not fun.

I love War Walkers. If GW wants me to buy an army it just has to have a bipedal mech walker and I'm in. Hey, nice Sentinels there Iggy...

Anyways, here is Walker #2 with the green layered up and the grey "primer" for the white parts. And a shot of him with #1 for comparison.

On other models I avoided washing the white parts to keep them bright, but on Walker #1 I did wash the white parts a bit. So with #2 here I've elected to save the wash for later since I'll be covering the whole model anyways so it matches its counterpart better.

You'll notice the poor guy is bereft a gun. Since you only get so many Shuricans per box I chose to just wait til I got my hands on another cannon. I might get lucky here in a bit on a trade and have a support weapon one I can steal. Til then we shall have to pretend.

Strip the Grav tank and respray it. Easier than trying to fix! Thorn freehand is amazing.

Thanks! The thorns were both easier and harder than I expected. They are simple enough to do, but you have to make sure your edges are very clean, so lots of going back and touching up. Very worth it though!

The tank, yeah... I would have stripped it down but I'm on a bit of a budget and didn't want to waste the paint. You can't tell cuz blurry photo syndrome, but I did sand most of the pebbling away and it did fill in with a few layers. I am considering going back to the shop to return the extra primer but for the most part I'm happy with how it turned out. Just had a bit of a nerd freak out there! Me and the tank are better now.

Blurry Wave Serpent!!!

This model is now ready for decals and thorns. Might do the decals first this time that way I'm not trying to fit them in around the thorns. Much easier to paint around a decal...

Anyhow, there she is. My very first Wave Serpent. Now just that fancy war walker to do and then I can start basing!

Haha, I love decals.

Finished putting the decals on the WS, couldn't resist lining them all up for a group shot. Say cheese mostly undead dudes!

Okay here we go!

This is what I'm working on now. Taking a break from painting to assemble 24 Guardians and turn 10 super old Guardians into Fire Dragons.

The old models actually lend themselves quite well to the conversion since they are so distinct. The scale is a bit off, but mostly it's the backpacks and shoulder pads that give the newer models their bulk. The Fire Dragons, or Guardians to become, are a bit shorter overall as well, but I think with a little tinkering I can come up with a solution. Mostly just add some shoulder pads and backpack vanes! Lol! The guns, are actually the nearest part, they look like a cross between a lascannon and a shuriken catapult with a box clip. Looks nothing like a catapult. But by shortening the barrel and reattaching the 'lascannon' tip I've managed to make a pretty convincing fusion gun. I may even make a fire pike for the exarch. Back to looks now, I got some of what I assume are DE spikey bits? Just two or three blades on a length, probably designed as gauntlet blades, but I've used them as head plumes for the FGs. I'll have to up the wow factor on them a bit more than this though to really get em looking like Aspect Warriors though since they're all the same pose and a little bland for elites.

Anyways, there ya go.

Well...

Everything assembled except for the weapon platform which is still soaking in the acetone. Don't worry! It's metal!

Unfortunately my Dire Avengers didn't come with bases so I had to steal the slotta bases off my poxwalkers, but this is okay cuz I have a ton of those models!

I made my DA Exarch with a powerglaive and a shimmershield. Haha, shimmershield. The kit only came with a power sword and a shuriken pistol so I had to nip a gun arm apart and pare down a forceshield from the Wraithguard kit to make a suitable shimmershield. Haha, shimmershield. To make the sword look like a glaive (which is just a sword on a stick) I'll have to extend the handle quite a bit. I don't want to move the blade up from the hand because that is simply too many joints to fail and would be impossible to fix once it broke. So I'll just extend the handle downward and it will look like she is choking up her grip on it, kinda like how the Farseer is holding his spear.

Also, not really sure but... It seems like the Dire Avengers are slightly smaller than the Guardians. Kinda makes these super old Guardians, sorry Fire Dragons, look a bit less out of place, and really once they are all painted they'll all look good

Anyways, here is a group shot of the entire army so far, minus one Warlock who lost his base to a DA...
