Currently getting back into the hobby, have had the first battle at ~850 Points, and looking to build up to 1250 to have better lists and to round out increases to 250 points seeing as we're having our own escalation sort of league. Also playing vs Death Guard new player. While our first match was more of a blowout due to tactical errors on the Death Guards part i'm a little afraid of what he could potentially build up to and am wondering if my list will be able to hold up. We've agreed to build up off of what we have, adding and subtracting units that just don't fit our play style rather than revamping entire lists. With all this being said, I do have quite a bit to work with considering I used to play a little bit and bought the Dark Vengeance box and sat on it for a bit, plus some random deals I found scouring the web of a couple groups of models here and there. So i'm not opposed to buying more models, but would rather try and make something work with what I have.

That being said, opponent has the other half of my Dark Vengeance box and the Dark Imperium Box, along with a Blight Hauler. He seems to be in love with his Poxwalkers, Typhus, and Deathshroud Terminators strategy on paper, so more than likely he will head that way. Eventually I feel when the points hit 2000+ Mortarion will be in the mix. There might be a third joining us as a Tyranid or Necron Player. While I understand strategy on a gradscale is near impossible in terms of planning to fight armies that i dont know anything about yet and to plan for the current fight is more viable, I like to have flexibility and being able to take on whatever is thrown in front of me.

Current List at 850 Points;

Patrol Detachment

HQs

Master - Relic Blade, CombiPlasma
Librarian - Force Sword

Troops

2x Tactical Squad - Plasma Cannon, Plasma Gun (SGT Plasma Pistol and Chainsword)

Elites

Venerable Dreadnaught - Assault Cannon, DCCW w/ Heavy Flamer

Heavy Supports

Devastator Squad - 2x Heavy Bolter, 2x Missile Launcher

The rest of what I have in reserve is;

(Interrogator) Chaplain

Dreadnaught - Multi-Melta, DCCW

Deathwing Terminators - Chainfist, Assault Cannon

Tactical Squad - Missile Launcher, Flamer

2x Ravenwing Bike Squad - 5 Bikers(w/ sgt chainsword), Plasma Gun

Attack Bike w/ Multimelta

Razorback - TL Las Cannon, Hunter Killer and Storm Bolter.

The way I see it, I can make 2 pretty different lists out of this.

List 1: The more Mobile list, which might be good vs a slow Death Guard army.

PatDet

Master
Librarian

2x Tacticals - Plasmas

Ven Dread

Ravenwing Bikers - Sgt + 6 bikers w/1 plasma & Attack Bike

Devs

Razroback

List 2: The Beefier List, which might make for an interesting standoff and +1 CP

PatDet

Master - powersword*
Librarian

2x Tactical Plasma

Devs

Vanguard Detachment +1CP

Chaplain

Ven Dread
Dread
Deathwing - no chainfist

Strategy on both is simple, Use Librarian to deny plague caster while casting his own abilities onto units. Master is kept with the tacticals. Tacticals are Squaded out to capture objectives while giving plasma cannon advantage of not moving and shooting. Devs to bring down some priority targets. Ven Dread is there to soak damage and deal out punishment in the front.

List 1: Ravenwing will be chasing around for Plague Marines and other hard targets, shooting and moving. Attack bike will be there to deal out heavy punishment possibly surrounded by his biker brothers or off on his own. Razorback to deal with some heavy assets from affar.

List 2: Deathwing for Deepstrike behind enemy lines to attempt to split the enemy, meanwhile both dreads will march in front attempting to plough through the enemy with everything they have, tacticals go for hard flanking movements while this is happening.

of course no plan or strategy stays intact when it meets the enemy, so, any pointers would be appreciated.

Hey there, got a f suggestions for ya; do with it what you will...

Those tactical squads need to be 4x5 not 2x10. you're already paying for 2HQs so buy your squads as 4 man man units (2 with chainsword, plamsa pistol and plasmagun, 2 with bolter sgt and plasma cannon) this will unlock you the battalion detatchment for +3 command points...
