My friend is getting rid of his space marines army, so I bought some units from him for very cheap. The list is as follows:

10 x Intercessor squad
5 x Hellblaster squad
10 x Tactical Squad
5 x homemade Devastator Squad (2 Tacticals with Heavy Bolter, 2 with lascannons, sergeant with pistol and chainsaw)
5 x Assault Terminators (with shields and hammers)
5 x Terminators (1 with assault cannon)
3 x Inceptors
2 x Leutanants
1 x Captain in gravis armor
1 x Chaplain in terminator armor

Keep in mind it is my first wh40k army. I played one small game since I got them against my Necron friend. I fielded 10 x Tacticals, 5 x Assault Termies and Chaplain against his 10 x Warriors, Necron Lord and C'tan Nightbringer, who totaly wrecked me. This Necron player is someone I will play with most often so I need army that could deal with him. I plan on building 1000 points army. I like the idea of having mostly shooting troops with some elite melee units for precise strikes. As for chapter, some models are already painted in Ultramarines scheme so I think I will go with that. What would be good directions for expanding the army I already have?

A Discopred (a predator tank armed with all lascannons) would help with anti-armour and big gribblies e.g. Mortarion.

If you want to delve into Forge World then a Sicaran and/or Fire Raptor would pay dividends.

Sorry just noticed. Obvious choice if sticking with Ultras is to throw the big G man in for the bonuses he confers.

Please note, for those of you who play Chaos Daemons as a faction the term "Daemon" is potentially offensive. Instead, please play codex "Chaos: Mortally Challenged". Thank you.

Yeah the C'tan wil cause problems. Have a captain near the hellblasters to re roll 1s while you supercharge can really help.

Thanks for suggestions! Both Guilliman and lascannon predador were crossing my mind. What about scouts? I've seen some battle reports starring space marines, and I found they are often picked in place of regular Tacticals as expandable unit. They seem worth the money with camo cloaks and a land speeder storm as transport. Considering my lack of any transportation, are Terminators with deep strike any substitute for mobile assault unit? Are they any semi-competitive elite choice, and if yes, is Land Raider required? And also, are primaris the way to go? It looks for me as they are going to be replacement for their little brothers in next few years. I hope I didn't overrun you with questions

At a 1000 points a las pred or bobby G is overkill and outside of that it seems its pretty casual.

You have a pretty good assortment of big thing killers though its mixed in between punch town and a few shooty things.

my only real suggestion is to try and make the dev squad a 4 las cannon one with a cherub so they can focus on dealing on big things instead of splitting their attention with those hb.

those two hb could get split into the blank tactical squads that can be split into two units to hold back line objectives.

things may need to be shifted around though as i didnt do a points or pl calculation at all.

Scouts are good, but I think bare-bones on foot is the way to field them these days. Their real use is as a screening unit, and for that you want them cheep.

I might look into a rhino/razorback for your tacs to help with the mobiliity. And look to pick up a little more anti-tank firepower. What you have is a solid base to build an army from. Which direction to go depends a lot on what you like and the style of play you enjoy.

Primaris are not necessarily better then normal marines. So if you want to stick with the old stuff, by all means do so.
