So I have a buddy who wants to start playing 40k. He got the Dark Imperium box set and wants to do them as Space Wolves. I'm trying to use the models he has, plus a relatively small expansion that he can grab fairly cheap/proxy since he's just going to be playing with me and friends, and I don't want him to go drop a ton of cash on models when I know they have a new codex coming in the next few months. So here's what I was looking at for him, do you guys think he'll at least be able to feel like it's competitive, or am I going the wrong direction?

The basic idea is he has some troops to sit back and shoot/grab objectives/protect Hellblasters. The Wolf Lords advance with the Vindicators to provide assault protection and to avoid being shot themselves/targeted with psychic powers. I used BT just so he can access Linebreaker and the 4+ Deny the Witch Stratagem. I'm sure the new wolf codex will have Linebreaker, and given the Space Wolves fluff, I'm sure there will be some sort of anti-psyker stuff there too, so shouldn't be a huge change once they get new rules. I know dakka wolves on bikes are popular right now, but I'm worried they will get a nerf with the new Codex, and Vindicators will always be Vindicators. Does this look fairly competitive to you guys?

Why bring a bunch of stuff every other Chapter has access to and not very much of what makes SW SW? I think bringing Bjorn with an Iron priest and a wolf lord on thunderwolf or 2, some long fangs, a few min squads of grey hunters or blood claws for screens and then some wulfen and TWC would be better. Something along those lines should be able to be tweaked into something both competitive and use the great unique options that SW have.

I think the same. But he might want to use that "Bombardment" stratagem in SM codex before the wolves one come out. If so, it is better to take out the Lieutenant and put Sergeant Chronus in one of thst Vindicator. It saves points.

I thought 4 Wolf Lords on TWolves was a lot of what made SW's, well, SW's lol. Yes to Neophyte's point, it would all be Wolves but they don't have access to any of the marine Stratagems. Once the codex is out, I'm sure they will get the stratagem so the list will still work. The reason I chose BT's is just for the 4+ deny the witch stratagem. I can see Chronus working, but if I'm gonna use the Stratagem I won't be using his BS other than maybe turn 1, though the heal is good. If I put in Chronus, what do you recommend to use the extra points for? The reason I have left out Bjorn specifically, is because he is so good right now. GW has a way of making something great, everyone gets it, then new Codex comes out and they have already sold enough of that model so there will be something awesome to replace it. TWolves have historically been decent since they came out so I don't think GW will hit them with the nerfhammer too hard. As far as all the primaris go, like I said, he has the Dark Imperium set and I'm trying to use mostly models that he already owns. He has a unit of TWolves as well, so he's gonna use each one as a seperate Wolf Lord. So to field the list, he would just need the 4 Vindicators.
