I've just been looking through Index: Imperium 1 at the Deathwatch army list, specifically at which other SMs units you can use in a Deathwatch army.

There's a list (on p.171) that shows the SM units you can use, but I was surprised to see that the Predator tank is not on there, nor is the Whirlwind tank. Does anybody know why this is?

On a further rules note, I understand that this means two things: that you couldn't paint a Predator or Whirlwind in Deathwatch colours, and nor could you use those models in a Deathwatch detatchment in a battle-forged army. Have I got that right? And at any rate, could I still play with a Deathwatch army featuring a Predator or Whirlwind because they're all human and there are bigger xenofish to fry than quibbling over what kinds of tanks differently coloured humans are allowed to ride in?

You can paint your tanks whatever colour you like. Even in Deathwatch colours.

Ruleswise, yes, you need to either field the Predator/Whirlwind in a separate detachment with either SPACE MARINE <CHAPTER> or IMPERIUM. You could still field it with your Deathwatch detachment, but you would lose DEATHWATCH for the detachment.

Thanks Hanskrampf. Just as a follow-up, would it be legal to play with two detachments, one Deathwatch-affiliated and one <CHAPTER>-affiliated one, in the same army? I'm coming back to the hobby from the 3rd edition days, and I'm overwhelmed by a lot of new structural rules!

According to most event rules I've seen you can have up to 3 detachments worth of models. As far as you and friends go it's up to you. Even the BRB limits detachments to 3 in matched play but in open play feel free to do whatever you want.

Yes, it is. Your army needs a spanning keyword, which is pretty easy with IMPERIUM. Inside this IMPERIUM army, you can have different detachments, which in turn also need a spanning keyword, in your case: DEATHWATCH for the first detachment, and SPACE MARINE <CHAPTER> for the second detachment (this is where you put your tanks).

There is no limit to the number of detachments in matched play. Pg. 214 of the BRB suggests 3 detachments for 1-2k as a guideline.
