Greetings one and all or, if I am to get into the spirit of things, oi, listen up youse gitz 'n' grotz.
Today I have received my 'Start Collecting Orks' bundled and so taken my first lurching steps into the boisterous world of the Orks. Cue obligatory cheers.
Now as I am new to collecting I have a raft of daft questions that I was hoping that august Warbosses and associated mekboyz such as yourselves may be able to help me with. The first of which is possibly the most daft and obvious of all; the modelling seems pretty straight forward if you stick to what the box recommends yet how do you go off piste? For example if I wanted a Nob with a power claw and combi-weapon what would be the best way to do this?
Any tips or photos showing off your no doubt wonderful work to get me started on piecing my chaps together?

WAAAAAAAGH!!
welcome to the Krumpin world of Orks. My very first army was Orks as well and I started with the Battleforce. They are very foregiving when it comes to kitbashing. Almost all of the kits can be mixed and combined with eachother so feel free to clip of the weapons and arms from the sprue and start lining them up by sight alone.
Feel free to click on my name and visit my Ork gallery for some of my images from when I started out if you'd like. I'm not a great painter, but I did make a few conversions including nob bikers and a looted wagon

Welcome to 40k, Orks and Dakka!
The start collecting box includes the Nobz sprue, which you'll find a few kombi-weapons on already, which are two-handed. So I'd suggest carefully removing the other hand, so the Ork is still holding the weapon across his chest, and having the claw instead of the left arm. Alternatively remove the weapon entirely from it's other arm as well by cutting straight at the wrist, then find another Nob arm (they're slightly thicker / muscley-er than Boyz) and cut the pistol off at the wrist too, then attach the kombi to the new wrist.
Good luck and have fun! (And be careful with sharpe knives!)

Welcome to the hobby, 40k, Dakka, and the Waaagh! The gallery here on Dakka is full of inspiration (in my proofs and prepaints gallery, I have an image of a Nob which is exactly as described above). There are plenty of other images of unpainted conversions throughout the dakka galleries if you just search orks and scroll through that will give you insights into the converting process. My only other bit of advice is to buy some greenstuff; you can get familiar with it by filling the gaps on simple conversions, and it becomes indispensable as your skills progress. Again, welcome!

As you're interested UK it might be worth mentioning that Amazon has some old kits remade by Revell that are good value for the models. By all accounts the paints aren't worth much but you can get a nice number of models from the old Black Reach/Vedros starter sets.
Here's one: Revell 00084 Warhammer 40000 Space Ork Trukkboyz Build and Paint Set https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01M9CYU84/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i1GJAbH5MHZA8
