Hey all

I will be going to a tournament in May with my Legions of Nagash army. The point limit is 1800 with max 300 pts of summon and max 300 pts allies. Not that it's relevant but they also have some funny rules about everything must be painted, based and WYSIWYG, however proxies are fine (yep, proxies and WYSIWYG at the same time...) anyway.

I will be taking a Legions of Nagash, Legion of Blood army.

Units I will take no matter what:

  • Vampire Lord on Zombie Dragon (Or Prince Vordhai)

  • 3 units of skeletons

  • 1 unit of 5 Blood Knights

  • 1 unit of 3 Vargheists

  • Other units I could take:

  • Mortis Engine

  • 3 more Vargheists

  • 3 Spirit Hosts

  • Necromancer

  • Vampire Lord with Wings

  • 20 Grave Guard

  • 3 Tomb Banshees

  • Corpse Cart

  • I was thinking of running a Bravery bombing list, as Legions of Blood is -1 bravery when close to any of my units, another -1 to bravery when close to one of my banners, could take command trait that would be -1 bravery for the unit my general kills a model from and there is a spell that does -1 bravery (Lore of Deathmages). I could potentially have a unit on -4 bravery, I was then thinking of using the 3 Banshees to whittle down units.

I could walk up a long line of skeletons that are being healed every turn from gravesites in the middle of the board and my heroes. The banshees could hide behind that line and while the skeletons tie something down they could take the enemy down with screams. The Blood Knights could run around as my beat stick, what with their 4 attacks each thanks to Legion of Blood while Varghiests zip about and grab objectives/ eat the occasional hero/mage. The Vampire Lord could maybe fly about and try to amarynthine orb things if they line up nicely (a stupidly powerful spell if you can cast it on 9 or more).

However, would you say that is reliable enough? Technically taking the bravery down by 4 on a bravery 7 unit means on average each banshee does 4 mortal wounds for a total of 12. I'm not sure that's enough to be basing my army on, especially that to do that I'd have to theme a good portion of my list just on that. I don't know, ideas?

I have often thought about taking leadership bomb armies but they suck if you run into blanket morale 10 armies (other death daemons etc).

I think it should be more a support element than the main plan.

With Morghasts you could get bravery -5. Bravery 10 armies can be a problem if you are targeting bravery with abilities (like death screams) but for most units any amount of bravery nerf can be very useful. Even a bravery 10 unit stands a chance of losing models once you've killed 5 of them, and it isn't very hard to kill 5 skeletons. Knock them down to, say, bravery 7 and suddenly just five kills means a 2/3 chance of killing more off with battleshock. Let alone if you kill a dozen.

@RParker - definitely one of my concerns, death is a popular enough army, I'll definitely run into a bravery 10 army at the tournament. I'm hoping that the blood knights and Vampire Lord on Zombie Dragon will give me enough of a fighting chance against those.

Also while bravery abuse with screams may not be effective against bravery 10 armies, once the damage threshold is high enough a drop in bravery gives a direct loss of models. I guess against those I'll have to try to deliver damage in spikes and not over time.

@NinthMusketeer - oh I didn't think of that, yes maybe I'll add a unit of those in the army. Will make it difficult to fit points wise but can be done.

Would you say a bravery list would deal well with hordes?

Bravery bomb is easily countered with Inspired Presence or by 10 Bravery hordes (daemons, death, Seraphon) and if forces You to concentrate banners in one place of the battlefield (instead of capturing objectives).

@Xyxel - I can see that being a problem, but doesn't every list have a counter?

Also, inspiring presence doesn't remove banshee screams and actually I don't need to stack banners, you only get - 1 bravery no matter how many banners there are.

The counter is only one horde can get inspiring presence, and skeleton/skink hordes are really easy to kill a bunch of in a single turn. Also, even just forcing the enemy general to use inspiring presence is an advantage since they almost always have a different command ability they'd rather use.

Or in other words, neither side is really a counter as much as tools to deal with an issue. So it comes down to playing the better game.
