I haven't played 40k for a couple years now and I had taken some Dark Angel models out of storage for a game at my local shop and noticed one of the Bikers was missing the Chain Sword it came with.
I could not locate the piece anywhere and only had extra Necron pieces.
I had replaced the missing weapon with a spare War Scythe and explained that it would function as a Chain Sword, which the local game runner said I couldn't do that, because the item has to resemble the weapon i want to use, so they suggested I use it as a Power Scythe.

Now i'm not an expert on current Dark Angel Space Marine rules but I thought the scythe was for Chaos marines?

Is that a legal thing to do or is that just the shop being weird about ruling ?.

It's not even a CSM thing -- it's specifically a Death Guard thing.

Obviously, their shop, their rules, but I think it's a little silly. The core rules no longer have strict WYSIWYG rules, but it's pretty ingrained in a lot of places.

(Unrelated, but chainswords are super common. If you can't get one for free, I'd be more than happy to mail you one. Feel free to PM me of you want it.)

The game runner is just being a jerk. The rulebook doesn't say anything about modeling weapons or even using the correct models. You could glue Lego men to your bases and call them Space Marines for all the rules are concerned. However, it's likely that people won't like that.

Regardless, if the shop has their house rules you don't have much of a choice. They may have had issues at some point with people using lots of proxies - maybe stuff they didn't even buy at their shop, so just adopted strict rules about it.

Alrighty, thanks for the input.
I figured the game runner was trying to get me to purchase a new squad at the store or something.
I'll probably end up doing that in the future to avoid in store issues, and just use the current biker for Home games or games at friends places.
