I haven’t played 40k in years but I recently got my wife into it and she wants to play Thousand Sons. I can’t decide which Army to play but I’ve always been enamored with biker armies. I’m thinking of going ahead and start working towards the Army I’ve always wanted with White Scars. Problem is, my wife doesn’t enjoy the close combat aspect too much and I’m fine with appeasing her and having mostly shooty games. Are White Scars capable of this?

Let’s say I do go ahead with the White Scars, how should I begin? The Dark Imperium box is such a great deal, would I be best to get that and to start my White Scars in a non-biker way? I’m cool with that because I can always add the bikes at a later date. I’m thinking of getting my wife a box of Rubric Marines, Scarab Occult Terminators, and Ahriman. Would the Dark Imperium Space Marines be a fun, even match against this setup? Would say 6 bikers and a White Scars commander? I don’t mind losing and I don’t want my Army to crush her and ruin the game. A benefit of Dark Imperium is that I enjoy Death Guard from our $40 starter box and she could mix them into her Thousand Sons if she wants. I have the rule book digitally so having the physical version would be a nice bonus, but not a selling point for me.

Would you recommend I jump right in with bikes despite wanting to be primarily shooty? What’s the White Scars bike squad upgrade pack? Am I better off with the Dark Imperium box and building up the base of my White Scars so as to have better, more shooty games now then I can add bikes later? What’s the deal with datacards? Are they something I’m going to want for each Army? Is there any other Army you would maybe recommend? I started with Dark Eldar in 3rd Edition so they have a special place in my heart. I am also interested in Tau and Necrons. I just want this game to be something my wife and I can enjoy together. As far as her not enjoying close combat, we’ve only played the First Strike starter box and that has low mini counts and it seemed like the melee was kind boring for her.

Based on what you're saying, it sounds like you've got a chaos vs biker space marine army in the works.

A great place - in my opinion - to start is the Dark Vengeance box from 7th edition. It will come with outdated rules, templates, etc, but you can throw them away or sell them on ebay. What you really want are the miniatures.

It comes with a Dark Angels force, and a Chaos force. You would probably still want to get Ahriman, and some Thousand Son specific models for her, but it would give you both a solid core force to start with. (Yours would include super iconic units, including bikes, and terminators; hers would include very useful stuff to complete 1k sons, and a unique dark vengeance only Helbrute)

To me when someone wants to do bikes in 40k, I think of Dark Angels, and Ravenwing. It's literally what they do, and they are a unique flavor of space marines, rather than just a footnote on the Ultramarine codex, like White Scars.

My personal opinion would be to avoid Dark Imperium. You can mix Death Guard with 1k Sons, but they are totally the opposite aesthetic, and her army will feel (in my opinion) rather disjointed.

When my lady was starting 40k, I got her a start collecting box and we built up from there, because she was interested in Chaos. If i could rewind time, i would have bought the Dark Vengeance boxed set (on top of also buying a winning lottery ticket). It's pretty cool IMHO, and the models are easier to build. I ended up buying her a Dark Vengeance Helbrute on ebay because we both liked it so much.

I don't know how good and fast you are at painting, but another thing I should have done, was get her first set of models professionally painted. It would have made the transition easy, and instead of starting with a tabula rasa in regards to scheme she would have had something tangible to mimic. But that's expensive and not for everyone.

Good luck! Do yourself a favor, don't even research competitive play. Just grow naturally into the game. The open war cards are nice, the missions in chapter approved are rumored to be really fun. Data cards are helpful shortcuts but not essential.
