Hello,

Total AoS noob here, FW Legion of Azgorh line, mostly the infantry, caught my interest and now I'm looking into starting a small chaos dwarf army, for matched play mostly. Additionally Chaos Dwarves look very 'conversion-friendly' as the war machines look like something people would and even should be converting. I don't personally like the look of FW offerings with these. I was thinking more steampunk/early-modern look.

Also I'm not sure if I want to be using Bullcentaur Render models, unit seems good on paper but I don't like the fluff and general aesthetic with them. First idea was to replace them with Orruk Gore-Gruntas they are even similar statwise. I have delved into the lore and some discussions already enough to know that Orcs and especially (Hob)goblins are commonly seen as slave/mercenary forces alongside Evil Dwarves so I guess Gore-Gruntas could be suitable?

My current plan is to get some Ironsworn and Fireglaives and build a few warmachines. Do you have any recommendations or pointers to look into regarding Chaos Dwarves or AoS in general? I personally like the idea of Chaos Dwarves + slave/merc Orcs and Goblins force so any army composition and unit proxy ideas are welcome!

If you are looking to be a matched play competitive gamer, then I would tell you to reconsider choosing chaos dwarves. They are a fairly weak list overall and expensive FW models to boot.

I have played them for many years, and I love the aesthetic, but from a competitive standpoint they are just badly in need of their own book and raised up in power a few levels.

Thanks for the reply! I also love the aesthetic and fluff, for most parts atleast.
Anyway I started reconsidering and I think I will go on with starting the army, I'll just look more into the WFB 9th edition with maybe some casual gaming into AoS and maybe trying competitive matches too. Although scouring through 9th edition it looks like the scale of games is much larger so I would need almost too many more models. Still AoS does look tempting because one can play with relatively small amount of models and units.
I'm really warming up on using Orcs and Goblins as frontline, which basically would be Gors, Ungors, Marauders or Marauder horsemen just modelled as Orcs and Goblins. This way I wouldn't need to 'splurge' so heavily into FW.

If you haven't already, I'd suggest you dive into the big thread on TGA about running the Legion of Azgorh. There is a lot of great help there. You can find it here:
