Battlescribe is basically it. GW shut down the really good one at the start of 8th edition over them using images of models, at the same time when they prior took Scrollbuilder for AOS, lauded the guy who created it and brought in-house.

There's one called HQ-Builder but it's not updated with the absolute latest (at least not last I checked), basically everything up to Chaos Daemons is updated though that I could tell.

Battlescribe does everything I need. The delay after new materials drop is annoying, and I check everything against the codex to be sure, but it is consistently accurate. I don't love their in-play reference materials (too long) so I type up my own 1-page stat sheet instead, but for fiddling with unit composition it's great.

I use excel spreadsheet, because reading my codex when writing my list has helped me remember what everything does.

Battlescribe sometimes has errors, and even when it doesn't, the data is presented in an (apparently) illegible way. I've had to explain to people that Space Wolf Long Fangs get to re-roll 1s against a target (which they didn't know), or that Custodes Land Raiders don't have Aegis of the Emperor.

Battlescribe - paid for so you can save favourite units and reuse them.

Clearly there's a problem when people show up knowing the Battlescribe version but don't have the codex... but it's perfect for continually playing with and refining a list

Then when going to a tournament, MS Word to type it up into a nice format

Can't imagine doing it in excel.

I can show you the Google Drive docs for any one of my armies, if you prefer!
I have my superheavy tank regiment, my Ordo Hereticus, and my Sororitas Order, though the best organized (because I've largely settled on a TO&E) is the 2nd Concordian.

Battlescribe. I have yet to find another that even comes close for 40K. Since Azyr came out for AoS, they haven't really updated their AoS section much (unfortunately), but for 40K, it's awesome!

This always bothered me. I know the hobby is expensive but just pay for the codex for Pete's sake...

I own the books because I like the content but I never have them with me when I play. As far as I'm concerned, codexes are about the worst way to facilitate gameplay out there. It's probably technically better than relying on memory and word of mouth, but I'd half prefer someone just make things up than flip through a book looking for all the relevant stats

Note, always double and triple check a battlescribe list by hand with your codex/CA when going to a tournament.

It is not infallible!

I actually have a spreadsheet I use as my primary list builder because its faster to change options and quantities than battlescribe. Once I'm done I... transcribe it? I guess and use that to play. The spreadsheet is built from the books (since battlescribe is a terrible, terrible reference) so its a good opportunity to make sure battlescribe is up to date.

HQ-Builder is very up to date. They have for example all Adeptus Custodes and TS rules and prices. Is my favourite one. But of course, when you settle on a list (I mostly use this builders to thinker possible lists for things I want to buit, etc...) double check everything with the Codex.

Dakka does have White Knights and is also rather infamous for it's Black Knights. A new edition brings out the passionate and not all of them are good at expressing themselves in written form. There have been plenty of hysterical responses from both sides so far. So we descend into pointless bickering with neither side listening to each other. So posting here becomes more masturbation than conversation.

I use clay tablets written in cuneiform to record my list which I fire, take a picture of, and share in a google doc. I also have an abacus app on my phone to calculate points.

Seriously people, I hate on battle scribe as much as the next guy, but you guys have reached hair shirt levels of hating. I rapidly iterate through list, trying different combinations to get what looks best. It's just a quick check after I have a list to make sure rules and points are right.

Constantly being negative doesn't make you seem erudite, it just makes you look like a curmudgeon.

Even better, when you come across an error, submit a bug report, it might take them a week or two, but they'll fix the problem.

The system works...assuming you use it.

Heretic, you know lists are written in sanskrit, if you can't be bothered with the format just don't bother.

I don't hate battlescribe but its UI is clunky.

No battlescribe, I don't want to pay for 2 power swords. Yes, I know I could for no benefit, but I'd be happy with a checkbox thanks. Oh, I'm over points, maybe if I just take a dreadnought instead of a venerable...

It's far from the worst thing out there and it does an admirable job with a pretty loosely coded system (both the program and the game rules....) but that doesn't make it any less infuriating when I'm 3 points over and need to figure out how to swap a couple things around to make everything fit.

Yet another person who uses Battlescribe. I used to use Army Builder, but I feel like that software is trash now. It was also extremely error-prone and slow to get codex updates.

It would be nice if GW would do something like Warroom, where you could have a unit’s stats on a card or sheet easily viewed from a phone or tablet, but it is what it is...

It never ends well

I'm honestly surprised that given the large digital push they've done over the last few years they still haven't released a digital army builder for their flagship game.

I suspect they've had one done for a while but can't work out how to release it, without preventing the need for buying the codex.

"Courage and Honour. I hear you murmur these words in the mist, in their wake I hear your hearts beat harder with false conviction seeking to convince yourselves that a brave death has meaning.
There is no courage to be found here my nephews, no honour to be had. Your souls will join the trillion others in the mist shrieking uselessly to eternity, weeping for the empire you could not save.

To the unfaithful, I bring holy plagues ripe with enlightenment. To the devout, I bring the blessing of immortality through the kiss of sacred rot.
And to you, new-born sons of Gulliman, to you flesh crafted puppets of a failing Imperium I bring the holiest gift of all.... Silence."

More likely, they’re trying to figure how to strip the serial numbers off of Battlescribe and make folks pay for it

Battlescribe for me, though I don't care for the mobile version. I prefer the desktop version for making actual lists. Mobile is what I use to fiddle around with ideas.

This still baffles me. I'm fine with using Battlescribe but I'd easily shell out 0.99 for an official 40k list builder, which most apps go for these days. That's just extra capital in GW's pocket.

I use battlescribe to make my lists but always use my Codex/Index when referencung to stats or abilities. I buy all my 40k books for Ebook because it suits me carrying a tablet + charger then the Rules book, Chapter Approved and Codex's.

Thanks for letting me know about this. I'm checking it out now.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.
