Subject: Question regarding area of effect buffs and verticle distance...

I am sorry if this has been answered before, but I searched the forum and read the Space Marine Codex FAQ for an answer and found none.
For abilities like Rites of Battle which allow you to re-roll hit rolls of 1 for figures within six inches of the model with the power, is it a six inch bubble or is it anything within six horizontal inches?
The example would be a Captain at the base of some ruins with a tactical squad nine inches directly above him in the same set of ruins. Would his area of effect work on that tactical squad?
I would say that it does not work on them since they are more than six inches away from the model with the ability, but I would like to have a more official answer.
Again, apologies if this has already been answered, but I could not find it anywhere. Thanks!

Page 2 of the battle primer, "tools of war" reads something like "meassure from the closest points of the models bases (or hull)"
So I would say that as long as the ability doesnt specify something different you have to meassure from base to base, as it was a bubble, as you say.

Page 176 under 'Tools of War'. Distances are always measured between the closest points base to base, or hull if the model does not have a base (or if it has a special rule telling you to measure to the hull instead).

It's a six inch bubble, and base to base, not head of model to base (except for vehicles as others note). Bear that in mind when measuring vertical aura distances

Also remember depending on the rule some are models within x" and others are units within x" like rites of battle is 'units' so as long as one marine in your example is within 6" the entire unit can re-roll 1's regardless of where they are
