My first and favorite army has always been Moria, so I’m considering using them as my first battle company. Does the expanded amount of models you can field trump the underwhelming stats of the goblins? The limits placed on starting numbers seems to negate the horde mentality of the goblins.

If you are plaaying middle earth from the standpoint of viability and competitive play I think you'll not have a good experience with goblins.

Now ... I watched a goblin battle company absolutely tear a dwarf battle company up in our campaign, but the goblin player was rolling a ton of 6s to wound.

In his next game against rangers, the goblin player with troll got shredded because the low fight value combined with being easy to kill was making for a field day for the ranger force's bows.

I consider orcs and moria goblins to be kind of hard-mode. You have to develop them before they start to be a real threat.

Goblins are Orcs with a Move of 5" and one lower Fight. Most skilled warriors have a Fight of 4 so will beat Orcs (and Goblins) on ties anyway.

The greatest mistake your opponent will make is underestimating your Moria goblins.

The moment you recruit a troll into your battle company, they will absolutely start ignoring your goblins, to their detriment. And you will always outnumber your opponent - two dice are better than one in a duel!

Thanks for the tips guys! It’s more of a casual setting so I’m not overly concerned either way. Is it terribly difficult to get a cave troll early on in a campaign?

He costs ten influence points so it won't happen right away. I'd spend your first couple influence on getting a few more goblins.

Good idea. Numbers can still do the trick.

I'd say every Battle Company is viable. its pretty easy to be outnumbering your opponent 2-1 with goblins which becomes especially useful when you get prowlers and black shields.

Sure you have low fv but you'll still be likely to have more dice, as well as as spear supports so you can easily win by weight of numbers.

As for the cave troll, you could probaly save for one fairly early on but you'll probably find boosting your numbers more beneficial early on. you may get lucky and get D6 bonus exp in the first scenario which can certainly help.

Agree with the others. Numbers of models can't be overlooked!

A Song of Ice and Fire - House Greyjoy.
AoS - Maggotkin of Nurgle, Ossiarch Bonereapers & Seraphon.
Bloodbowl - Lizardmen.
Horus Heresy - World Eaters.
Marvel Crisis Protocol - Avengers, Brotherhood of Mutants & Cabal.
Middle Earth Strategy Battle game - Rivendell & The Easterlings.
The Ninth Age - Beast Herds & Highborn Elves.
Warhammer 40k  - Tyranids.

A lot depends on the scenario as well. Take relic for example. A larger battle company can spread out more, and have a much better chance of finding the relic.

Yeah, I suppose it all comes down to what the objectives are. I’m certainly going to win some and lose others as I get into the swing of things.

Goblins are efficient for their points. 5 points per pop is pretty good and two of these suckers can do a number to most folks because of their weight of dice.

This is a game of sixes and so you'll lose duel rolls, but you also can freely feint.

Don't forget that y'all can climb really well. Don't underestimate that at all because that will win you games.

Goblin shooting is inaccurate, but enough bows with small silhouettes can be scary since you can potentially bring a lot of bows. Don't bother moving and shooting most of the time, the opportunity cost is not in your favor there.

Goblins can rank-n-file pretty well and can reasonably surround smaller battle formations, do not underestimate heroic marches that will end up setting up a trap for numerous models.
