Don't know if this is the right place to discuss this. Also, "muh Primaris", I suck, I have too much money, I should be ashamed, I fell for a geedub marketing ploy, dem gotdang kids and dey newfangled minis, git offa muh lawn, etc, etc, etc.. It is what it is.

I started collecting and playing SM in 2004 on the heels of the original Dawn of War (dang, has it really been 13 years). Played my first game using the rules from the freshly minted 4th Edition. I quickly established that I am godawful at actually "playing" 40K: I'm bad at strategery, not patient, I have a temper, hold and voice strong opinions on rules and rule changes and am a misanthrope in general. So, not the best mix for playing a competitive game in the company of other people. I don't think I've ever gone as low as to become a full-on "That Guy", but I was once politely asked to leave a group and never come back, LOL. All of that plus rule changes caused me to sour on the wargaming aspect of the game altogether, and I haven't played an actual game of 40K since sometime midway through the 5th. Bottom line is - I haven't played in years and I'll never play again.

That didn't dampen my enthusiasm for actual minis, so over the years I collected and built something to the tune of 3000-4000 points of whatever SM units I thought looked good in a display case. A portion of them were converted, some in less-than-sane fashion that would get me laughed out of the room. (Case in point: loyalist SM mounted on de-khornified Bloodcrusher Juggernauts, to represent Thunderwolf Cavalry. Or an Emperor's Champion with a Sanguinary jetpack, but with Possessed batwings instead of feathery BA ones. IDK what I was thinking at the time). Offhand, I have six tactical squads, two assault squads, a dozen devastators, six fully magnetized Rhino chassis, a Land Raider, three dreadnoughts (including a FW Contemptor), some fliers, and a pile of assorted elites and HQ. All of it is painted in a variety of standards from "neat tabletop" to "display quality". Jolly good.

For a while I thought I was all done collecting 40K unless something UTTERLY AMAZING came along, and of course, the Primaris popped out of the woodwork. I bought the Dark Imperium set, thinking it'll be a nice exercise at "something new" and fell in love with the mini range to the degree that surprised even myself. Originally I planned on building a couple squads, and having this nice compact new army in the display case. Then one morning I woke up looking at 60+ infantry models alone, plus dreadnoughts, plus the hovertank. I even found a commission painter (oh yeah, in addition to all that, I can't paint so I pay others to paint for me, tee hee) to get all of it painted in the same consistent fashion.

My problem is that now I have way too many minis that do not go together at all. Seriously, even if you have a shade of OCD, displaying Primaris and classic SM in the same case is giggleworthy, because the "old faithful" models look like deformed goblins next to the "new shiny" stuff. And much as I'd like it, I can't justify adding another display case. So, something's got to go.

What would you do in this case? Pack the old minis away and forget about them for a while? Flog them on eBay or otherwise?

Go post on the Swap Shop and sell off those models you do not want to keep.

My two cents,

Swap shop the old, try to maybe trade for new stuff you like? If you were gonna buy more new stuff anyway, try to trade it for a better deal for yourself.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Sell and roll the hobby money back into new projects. I try and keep a max of 3 armies for different systems, 1 is my childhood army and the other 2 are "flavor of the year" or whatever game I'm diving into.

The past 2 years? Dropzone Commander, Warmachine Circle, KoW Dwarves, and Dark Angels

After shedding those projects I had a few thousand to drop on this Years insanity. HH 30k, Tyranids, massive upgrade to my office space, possibly Vampire Counts, who knows!

"classic" marines arent out-dated. They are still in the current ruleset and are still sold as new.

The grognard advice here is to hang on to them.

I've sold a number of armies over the years, for a number of reasons, and there are only a few I don't regret selling.

Pack 'em up and keep them safe. You never know when the bug might strike.

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k.                                                                                                       Rule #1

Think it's useful to have a time limit on things that are boxed away, and if they've been in storage for 18 months or more the chances are they'll stay there.

Unless you are a 'hoarder', are very fortunate with storage space or the tolerance of your family/partner, I would sell what you aren't using. Trust me, you'll feel better for lightening the load!

May I suggest a more radical solution: strip the paint off them.

I've collected dozens of armies over the years, and sadly, the passage of time does make the paint job on them look worn out,

but as my painting skills have improved over the years, I went back to those older models, stripped the paint off them, and gave them new paint jobs with my improved skills.

The results were pretty good and breathed new life into old models.

If you are going to let them go, trade for things you do want. The price you get selling them will be much less than people are usually willing to trade for.

But I agree with some of the other posters. I usually regret trading away entire armies, you might just want to box them up and stick them in a closet.

Very much this.

I sold my first Ork army when I thought I had moved on to other and better things, and I've regretted it ever since. I mean, it wasn't a fantastic army, being mostly made up of 2nd edition and Space Crusade plastics with a bunch of rather shoddy conversions... but it was some of my first gaming model work, and it's a shame not to still have it to look back on.

You sound like a 'collector' hobbyist, so keep your favourites that you want to have in your collection and use the rest to get other stuff.

I second the notion to sell stuff. If it's not special to you, might as well dump it and get your money back!

Keep any special miniatures, including conversions or things you otherwise spent a lot of time on. Not just because you'll likely regret selling them, but if you do, it probably won't be for very much and that seems like a waste.

Flog the rest.
