Hi,

I've never played a marine army before and I'm looking at DA. I don't currently own any SM models.

I have no problem with the primaris models but won't the (nicer looking) DA elites like bikes/termies/veterans look small and out of place next to primaris. What are my options when it comes to building an army that is legal for tournament play? Can I use normal marines with converted plasma looking weapons for hellblasters? Can I use converted assault marines as interceptors?

I would appreciate any advice regarding this matter.

*Please note, I have absolutely no tournament experience*

I think it would be hard to justify the use of 'normal' marines to represent primaris. Whilst WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) has been removed from the rulebook, I would expect tournaments to have some variation of it as part of their rules.

Also, moving forward it is 99.99% (random internet statistic) likely you'll never get any new 'normal' marine models, so as new units come out you'll have to find new ways to convert them.

I would suggest an alternate approach - convert the 'old' marines to look better in comparison to the primaris. There are a few tutorials about the place for up-scaling terminators and the like, and if you're willing to learn to make robes (not that Vets need to have robes) out of green stuff I think it'll work.

Well primaris are fluffiwise supposed to BE bigger so it's more up to fluff to have normal marine models to be smaller.

Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

Just don't play Primaris, they're rubbish as an army and don't look that good compared to regular marines.

Play primaris, they look great, have some great units and are future proof, as marines transition to their new incarnation in the coming years.

That is because you are wrong. Simply put true scale Primaris are great and look better than old Marines.

I dig the look of Primaris but have to admit that it seems like old school marines perform better on the table right now.

Ah, but on the other hand, regular marines are great and look better than the new primaris.

Depends on the unit. My BA army found a nice little synergy between 10x Primaris Hellblasters (with Plasma Incinerators), 1x Primaris Captain, 1x Primaris Ancient (with the Standard of Sacrifice). Essentially I have two wound models that have a 5+ FNP that get the chance to shoot when they die on a 4+ due to the Primaris Ancient's innate ability. Now DA wouldn't get the 5+ FNP as they don't have that relic, but the could run Hellblasters without a Captain and still get the reroll of 1's as long as they don't move, which when combined with a Lieutenant and the stratagem that allows for +1 damage to plasma weapons is pretty insane. Were I to do a DA version, I would run 10x Hellblasters with Heavy Plasma Incinerators, with a Lieutenant and a Chapter Ancient (Allows the last shot to be at 2+ BS) .It's a big points sink at 495pts, but you're looking at 10x Str 8 AP-4 1D at 36" with hit (assuming you didn't move) and wound rerolls of 1. You can overcharge to Str9 and 2D (with a stratagem to 3D) as needed. You can even add an Apothecary to potentially bring back models too. It's mean

Also Intercessors with an auxillary grenade launcher are awesome (30" krak grenades are pretty sweet).

It's entirely subjective. IMHO they're the worst looking GW models in the last 20 years along with the new deathguard guys.

I wouldn't be so sure, GW always produces new marines. I doubt that we'll see SM 3.0, the bigger version of primaris. Once people lose interest in primaris I bet GW will re-do the 1W SM once again. It will take a few years of course, but probably not as many as people think. Regular marines could even be in starter set of 10 edition already. 5-6 years with no basic SM releases at most.

How silly of me, I forgot about that rule on pg.5 of the rulebook that says you must play with all the models of your faction even if you don't like them.

Should Grey Knights players just commit suicide, or is there perhaps an alternate option?

Grey Knights players are supposed to buy the new & shiny Custodes. After all, gold is more impressive than silver.

Primaris? They are just Stormcast in disguise. Burn these heretics on sight.

The standard Primaris look great, but the special ones look straight up awful. The terminator and assault equivalents(or whatever they’re supposed to be) look like complete gak on the table. The ridiculous number of guns on the repulsor tank makes me chuckle as well.

I don’t have to like them to play marines, which is good becuase I don’t but I do.

Marines should be about the size and pose of the new Death guard and T sons models

it makes them about half a head shorter than primarus rather than the full 1 head

they actually look really nice scale wise.

only one that can tell you if conversions are T legal is your TO

personally i love the truer scale marines.

Accept that you're playing Codex: Dreadknight? Play Narrative without the rule-of-one psyker limitation? Go ask Proposed Rules for some tweaks to fix your army?
