Just as the title says. My questions are, Is Skorne a viable faction, if so do you consider them op in the current state of the game. I am not much of a power gamer but I want a faction that isn't dead in the water. Also are there a lot of Skorne Players in your play group? I am not a big fan of Mirror matches.

My last question is how is WarmaHordes doing in your area, is it growing or dying out, and if it is dying out why?

Thanks for all the help

Skorne is viable. They've been doing well at major events lately. I'm
not so familiar with the builds though, as there are no regular local
Skorne players (who play meta builds, I should say). My local community
has been about the same as ever. Biggest issue is everyone I met
who plays keeps moving away from Chicago...

Skorne has never been a popular faction, though that may change with their good showings in recent tournaments. Part of that is because of a situation called "skornergy". It's a concept that often allowed a lot of synergetic items to be traps of army builds. That is pretty much gone, for the most part, but Mk 3 saw them with a rather lackluster start. As with skornergy, that was dealt with, but you'll either have to rely on Warroom 2 or downloaded cards to take advantage of them (the card deck is woefully out of date).

They are largely a good faction that offers good hitting and great support. The only downside is that their Themes do not offer much in the way of a combined arms set up, as they focus on one aspect of the army or another, but that also allows for an easy focus when building up your force.

Rasheth the Hutt is considered one of the more powerful Warlocks, and is often taken in the Winds of Death theme. Other Warlocks are pretty good as well, with each providing a good amount of support to their armies. The only one that has major issues is Mordikaar, who is great with Void Spirits, but none of the Themes provide access to them, leaving his only access to them being via Despoiler's Bond to him.

My meta's setup isn't really going to compare to yours, but there are a couple Skorne players here, and I collect them as well (I'd probably play them if I could arrange more play time ).

WarmaHordes isn't doing badly here, even though we have numerous LGS which sell it, we have our biggest stores putting out Steamroller tournaments rather regularly and each one sets up a Journeyman League every year. Before Mk 3 and 40K's 8th Edition hit, it was doing much better with tournaments happening at most of the LGS every month each. It's tapered off partly because of X-Wing (which is HUGE here), and partly because of the renewed interest in 40K. Mk3's launch happening roughly the same time as 40K's 8th Edition launch didn't really help. 40K went from being a complicated rules-lawyer-fest to a simple rules-lawyer-fest, while Warmachine remained its own deep self.

If you want more information on Skorne, look up their Facebook page (though it can be a while before anyone accepts your request), Battlecollege, or forums like LormaHordes who provide a specific forum for the faction.

Thanks for the replies so far, I appreciate the help. I have been watching some batreps on the game and have found them to pretty entertaining. What books should I get and where can I learn more about the Lore? I am a huge Lore nerd and have spent some time on Lexicanum learning about the world.

Also is there a tier list for the armies? I have watched a couple of games where everblight players were complaining that the Skorne were op so I just wanna make sure that they are strong and not ridiculous.

Thanks for the continued help.

Skorne has been in Hordes since the beginning, so it largely depends on which lore you're looking for. The old Primals and the expansion books all carry stories of battles with Skorne, and are even mentioned in the Trollblood book (Battlebox Warlock, Xekaar, is present for the story). There are also stories that can be found in the old Forces of Hordes: Skorne book, but probably the best place to start for overall lore is the Skorne Command book.

I'm not good at knowing the tier lists, but Winds of Death have been one of the better themes for Skorne. Skorne was one of the first ones to get attention from the CID, which cured their launch's blandness (the army wasn't bad, it just lost a lot of its fun), while I don't think Everblight has had such a faction-oriented look at it. That may explain where the problem lies.

Skorne's strongest piece currently is almost certainly its battle engine, the Siege Animantarix. A list with a pair of those will catch an unprepared player with few options as its got an absurd threat range on a model that hits like an average heavy before considering its gun and is far more durable. It works in multiple themes as well, contributing to the ranged heavy Winds of Death as well as the beast heavy Imperial Warhost.

Ironic, that. It used to be the most spurned model in the Skorne lineup. It was joked at the Meat Thresher's release that Skorne finally had access to a Battle Engine.

Yeah. It's definitely a model that has had its ups and downs. Honestly, its insanely strong right now and mostly limited by Skorne's lack of popularity and a lack of them in people's collections due to historical mediocrity.

And the price tag. Sucker is not cheap. I can get a Bronzeback and another Titan kit for the price of one of those. Of course, the price point is closer to the Sentry, so...

My friend got out of his entire collection and put his stuff up for
sale. Since I was local I got dibs on some of the huge base stuff
he had. I was still the first person to offer on his siege animantarax.

He received 22 offers after that

Waiting for my shill money from Spiral Arm Studios

No faction in WMH is dead in the water. All factions can make competitive builds. Some more than others of course, but relative to other games its in a good place.

Skorne is in a good spot after their CID fix from their disastrous transition from mk2 to mk3. They're in a good spot now. They're definitely not in the OP category in any areas, that would be Cygnar and Khador.

You'd put Khador on par with Cygnar? You've got an interesting meta. That's why I like wmh so much different regions metas can lead to different factions pulling far ahead.

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

Khador is generally very powerful. Well above the curve and can feel very OP. They’re just not viable competitively because they have almost no game into Cryx lists with the Wraith Engine.

Since this is a thread inquiring about the health of the meta, I'd like to clarify that said individual actually kept two of his factions while he off-loaded everything else. Suffice to say, there is still a lot of interest in the game, and no one that I know is actually fully divesting.

Ha! Yeah, I forgot about that.

You know, you both have invites to the basement.

I largely did the same thing. I sold a lot of the stuff from my 4th, 5th... etc factions and have stuck to 2-3 I really love in MK3. Some of this is just that I've shifted from being less devoted to any single system and branched out into other games and some of it is just that I find MK3 far more rewarding to play focusing on a single faction. The theme forces do a nice job of making more models viable and differentiating playstyles.

Funnily enough, I've spent the last few months getting rid of my LotR, Infinity, Dark Age, board games and assorted miniatures to focus purely on one faction in Warmachine (the faction that happens to be five factions). Another part of this, though, is sort of realizing that "gamerhood" is less and less of my identity and self concept.

Skorne had a rough start when MkIII was first released and they were really the reason why PP invented the CID processes. They went through a major update after CID and are totally legit.
