Hi, I'm new to wh and I'm struggling to get a hold on how to create an army I've seen a few guides but what I don't get is how you know whether the army would be viable or utter gak.
For example i'd like to make a mixed army of blood angels and adepta sororitas. Is it viable?
thanks for answering

Viable VS Gak varies a bit depending on the "meta" of where you play. Ergo different clubs and situations will often attract a different skill and kind of player. In some areas they wil lbe very competitive whilst in others it might be far lower skill in army building or casual.

In general when starting out its often good to go with what you like the look of as a ground rule. You're going to spend ages assembling and painting so often as not its good to start on some things that you like and want to put together. Then work them into an army.

The current edition of the rules is proving rather good for giving most models a viable position in the right good army.

If you want a solid start I'd start searching army lists and writing out what people use for your army choices. The result of which would give you a rough idea what is popular in choices and that can start to be the base of your army collecting.

problem with that is the army will then be a high end meta army cuz if it aint OP or broken, people dont post lists. (atleast not in here)
the best place to start is a 50/50 mix of high end meta units and mid/low end units. not all humans you face will be high end meta players. some actualy like the narrative or open rules or even play with power points.

yes, you can mix angles and sisters in the same army BUT they must be in 2 separate detatchments if you want to use army traits and strategems. (details about detatchments and strategems is in the core rule book)

40k is ultimately a game you play with other people, so how seriously you want to build your army really depends on what kind of games you're playing and who you're playing with. Everyone's a little bit competitive, but the vast majority of players are not hardcore competitive players and you probably don't need a list tuned to win a GT if all you're doing is playing on the weekend at the local club.

And of course, for a large share of 40k players, the actual rules and competitiveness of their units is way less important than the look, feel, and aesthetic of their army. And that's totally ok.

First, Welcome to Dakka.

I’d start of with a general, take all comers list. Think of the different things you might face, and try to incorporate an answer into your list. Also keep an eye on the victory conditions. Most games require you to get boots down the table to seize objectives. In 8th screening units and board control are also important.

Now that everything can potentially work against every target, I’m probably going to have to change up my stock recommendation. But here is what I’ve advocated as a checklist.

Something to deal with heavy armor
A way to pop open light armor/transports (preferably early in the game)
Something to deal with high-T monsters
Horde killing
Anti-air (nice, but less required these day where it’s only a -1 to hit)
A way to grab objectives, and keep boots alive there as long as needed (varies depending on game type)

In 8th, you should also watch how many units are in your army, as a lower number will help you go first. And screening units.

Now I don’t play either Sisters or BA, so take this with a grain of salt. But if you are mixing armies, look at what each one does well, and what their weakness are. Play to the first, and cover the second.

I’d form the core of the army around sisters. They are low point models. Use them to help fill up the board and spam bolter shots for hordes. Pack a few melta squads in there (dominators?) to erase nasty things. Use the BA to do things they can’t. Probably at least one tough choppy squad to blend things. Maybe a pred/dev squad for long range LC support.
