Hello!

I would like to start this little WIP painting and modeling blog, hopefully helping to maintain my motivation.

A Little Background:

In 2003 I got DoW and discovered warhammer. Later on, I got the Tau expansion, and discovered Japanese mecha robots in 40K.

Due to the popularity of the army, when I actually started to play 40K in 2015, I chose (foolishly) to buy other models due to not wanting to be perceived to bandwagon on what was the Tier 1 army at the time. I kept my want in secret for many, many years. With the release of 8th and a basic retooling of the game as a whole, I thought it would be a good idea to start amassing an army. So slowly, piece by piece I began buying models for my Tau project back in October of last year. I started working on the bases in February, and when I get home tonight I will update this post with some of the preliminary photographs.

So I've chosen the original Tau Sept Tan color scheme as a base, and as I progress through the project I will make small changes. For basing I have chosen to make use of the Martian texture paints from GW, hoping to create a red, dry sandy base. I don't have any specific list in mind, though I love the idea of having a more traditional mechanized force, with some suit and drone support.

Thank you for stopping by and I'll make sure to get those photos up asap.

So here are some examples of what I have been working on these last four weeks. I'm still having trouble getting the base to where I want it, I guess I'm either not putting enough on, or I'm not moving it around enough.

I have to say, these kits have been a blast to build, I'm currently working on the Riptide, and I love it! I always thought that Tyranids and Tau would have the hardest skill level kits to build, but I am totally wrong!

The basing is plain at this point and could use work. If you really want to learn dakka is the right place to ask around or get random advice from people passing by.

In general though most people say good job/give you positive mention breifly and move on.

That said slap a brown or black was down on the bases or add even more texture paint as you barely applied any as shown by the base still showing off itd dip in the middle. I highly recommend more paint. Also add some debris mixed in tiny pebbles and plastic scraps to make rocks and what not. That texture paint works like glue.

Dont worry about the black rims you paint those back on in the end.

I think you base should be thick application of dirt, some rocks or something for variation mixed in. Wash with brown or black mixed. Dry brush maroon color and then spot dry brush on raised areas blood red colors. That should make for a strong martian base. And you can dry brush the legs of the models to make it look like dirt from the base is on them though "advanced painters" use pigments and varnish to get that effect rolling.

Keep the momentum alive.

Yes, I'm getting the hang of these new texture paints. They require a huge amount, but I went back down and put more on today. I also did two different drybrushes on one base. I also ordered that basing tool, because they're super helpful!

So tonight's UPDATE:

Started applying more texture paint to the bases. Tested some drybrushes, which I will post tomorrow.
Primed the models I currently have built and made some progress on the leg and pelvic assembly of my Riptide.

My base color for my army is due to arrive in the mail tomorrow, so as soon as I have that I'll be testing my colors on the little weapon platform which comes with the Fire Warrior kit.

Hello all!

Quick update. Below are three bases I did for crisis suits. I'm mixing both Iron Earth and Iron Crust to create a sort of strange red-desert riverbed. I used a heavy drybrush of Ryza Rust and a light drybrush of Eldar Flesh.

I look forward to watching your progression. Tau are one of the very few armies I have not yet dabbled in.

The bases are much improved. Did you dry brush the flesh over the entire base? In thr future i would only do the tallest regions of the base. That way you get more color varation. Because dirt is actually tons of colors

Yes, I did lightly dust the whole base, but concentrated the heaviest DB was concentrated on any raised edges. Because these are stealth bases, and the model will cover most of the base, I intentionally kept them light. The other bases which are proabbaly dried by now will feature a lot more heavy terrain, as they are more open with the models on them. Especially the Fire Warriors. I have begun to lay down a base of XV-88 on most of the models, but I now have a fair amount of building to get to this weekend as well.

Hello Friends!

Tonight I did some painting and finished off the first round of bases for 10 Fire Warriors, 3 Stealth Suits, 1 Ethereal, 3 Crisis Suits and my Riptide. I have everything except the riptide primed (still assembling it) and I now have actual color on a Crisis Suit and the support turret.

Going into the weekend I plan to build some new purchases, namely 20 more Fire Warriors, 6 stealth suits and a Devlifish.

No photos to share tonight, far too drowsy (thank you tree pollen season) but I am planning to get some better photos tomorrow during the daylight, weather permitting!

Happy Trails sports fans!

If you're looking for more things to try, I find using small bits of broken cork for rocks and stuff really makes a base look better, after all, how often do you see large stretches of smooth sand.

Ah, but that is what I'm going for. A sort of death valley look. But I will take it into consideration. I will have some more pictures coming up soon!

Well, I have experienced a minor setback. As of right now my local store cannot order any models this week due to their budget pretty much spent on the new star wars game.

So my hammerheads and Longstrike aren't going to show up as I intended. While this throws of my schedule a tad, it isn't going to impact this project too badly. In the meantime I have begun to work on the next two squadrons of Strike Teams and have started to lay down color on the models.

I'm using a "two thin coats" approach as suggested by many people I have chatted with. I started with a layer of Chaos Black, and coated it nicely with XV-88. I've got at the current time three Crisis Suits based. I have 5/10 strike team fire warriors based, and this brings me to setback number two.

Something went way wrong on my second run of bases. I'm not sure if somehow water got into the texture paint, or if I somehow mixed the think and thin textures I am using, but the second batch of bases cracked up and the paint wouldn't stick!

I was able to get them all cleaned off today, and I spent some time this evening re-basing them with the thicker paint. I've decided I don't want all of the bases to be all that uniform anyways, so some of the men will look as though they're walking through a dusty arroyo, and others will look as though they're flinging about some crusty sands.

No photographs tonight. The lighting in my home is abysmal and so I can't ever seem to get any decent pictures. I am attempting to rectify this but it will likely be a few days. Please expect a lot of new photographs this weekend!

Hmm, I dunno. I'd like to keep skulls off the bases as those are so common in 40K you could use them as currency. I kind of like them minimalist, so I may just keep them as is. The past couple of days I've gotten a fair amount of work on them done, so I need to get photos up!

I understand.

For me, part of it comes from Imperium burnout. I've seen so much in the way of Chaos/Imperium lately, as most people at my FLGS play one of those two factions, that I'm trying to escape it.

Hello all,

Been a little ill this week, little sleep and tons of work. But things are coming out of the tunnel, so I should be able to get some stuff up later in the weekend.

For the moment, no pictures.

Just building a Riptide and still painting armor with the base color.

I have been working off of a schedule and my plan is to have all of my Infantry Primed, Based, and Highlighted before April 24th.

A good start is blocking in the colors and washing. Its considered to be the staple too tabletop quality.

The subassemblies are good, and will simplify a lot of your work you need to do.

That said, good luck. Keep up the momentum.

In the future, you should shade and vary the color more as you have planned.

Thanks Panda,

Hello all,

I've run into a bit of trouble. For those familiar with the Fire Warrior model, I do not want to paint the pants underneath their armor black, as is typically done with the T'au Sept scheme. Instead I'm wanting a lighter brown/tan color, one which fits with the dark tan armor, but doesn't detract from it.

Does anyone have any paint suggestions, basically I just want a base, layer and a highlight color.

That better be 160 miles round trip, because if that’s just one direction I think I’d be switching army paint colors or hitting amazon with quick delivery . I’m just lazy though and have plenty of “other” things to paint.

It's crunch time for me for LVO and my local store doesn't have any. So I'm heading to the nearest large city, can't afford to lose 2 days of painting! : D

In any case, I'll be adding more pictures soon.
