Greetings all!

Last year my friends and I played multiple rounds of 40k every week (small armies, shorter duration). This experience inspired me to create the following system which I am dubbing the "Whazgog Dynamic Character System" (WDCS, the System). I'm posting it to Dakka so the community can utilize it as they see fit, supply play-tested alterations/suggestions , submit updates on their fav. characters [successful or otherwise] , or mold this blueprint to fit the needs of their particular army .

I'm placing this here, in Fiction, and as an article. I'm sure the mods will sort me out so it gets to the right place!

Some preliminary notes/FYIs:

1 TL;DR Section one - - is generally designed for factions where commanders will die frequently. Section two is designed for factions where commanders have greater longevity and a higher chance to survive multiple battles. Each section should hopefully convey the WDCS clearly, without needing to read the whole post.

2. I play and so the System is designed with that in mind.

3. WDCS follows a general format with minor tweaks to suit each faction.

4. The achievement milestones have not been thoroughly play tested so they might be too easy or too difficult, especially when applied to factions where I have limited experience.

5. I'd like for this to be pseudo-open source/collaborative system so when tweaks are made for other factions, I'd like them catalogued somehow (either in this thread or some other way {Maybe Mods have the answer?). Id also like this to be an ongoing section for the trials and triumphs for your characters

With that out of the way, let's get to it...

Whazgog's Dynamic Character System and Name Generator for Warbosses, Mek Boyz, and WierdBoyz
Names acquired via http://www.fantasynamegenerators.com/warhammer-40k-ork-names.php
1. Names are augmented, added, or removed based upon battle results

2. New names can be added to the pool of "not used" names by any deployed Warlord {Warlord “X” wins five battles and promotes 5 new names}. Example from table below: Warlord Uzdruk is already a warboss, so his victories add names to the "not-used" pool (and increase his badass-itude of course).

3. One new character is acquired for a victory or tie corresponding to the chosen warlord type taken in battle (i.e. Big Mek Warlord victory = 1 new “Big Mek Name”, 1 Warboss Warlord Victory = 1 new “Warboss Name”, etc. etc.) This simulates a character being promoted to fill a vacant position of power based on results. Example: Gargunak fights as a Big Mek for a battle and wins or ties. He is thus promoted to Big Mek and moved from the "not used" list to the "Big Mek" list.

3b. It is also possible to have multiple characters of a similar type i.e.Warboss and Warboss in Mega Armor or Warboss on Bike etc. See attached table image for example.

4. Name augmentations are acquired when a deployed “Warlord” commits an especially noteworthy achievement [slay warlord, kill vehicle, destroy numerous enemy unit groupings, etc.] {ex. “Warboss Zhugtak” personally killz a stoopid enemy Space Marine Champion and becomes “Warboss Zhugtak Brainchrushah”}

5. “Warlords” that die in battle are denoted by red text color+line through and are deceased henceforth regardless of whether the deployed army wins or loses the battle overall.

6. WDCS is designed so that an army can WIN a battle (thus gaining a new name to the "not-used" list) while also LOSING the deployed warlord in the process. If an army LOSES a battle but the deployed warlord SURVIVES, said warlord is treated as “survived” and stays in command in their current role, but NO NEW names are gained.

7. The system DOES ALLOW for the list to have zero living characters on it BUT this does not mean Waaagh! Whazgog is dead. Rather: ambitious greenskins are always trying to win a victory, earn their way onto the list, and thus make their mark as part of the greater WAAAGH!!

A sample image of this system in table form is attached.
***Instances with multiple characters in the same role are also table based:

Uzdruk is a regular Warboss
Snurgnug is a Warboss in Mega Armor

My character events have also been accompanied by blurbs, but this is a personal preference.

What follows is an example of the WDCS at work:
Former Imperial Planet/Current Ork World: Sarmatia - Bahrblok Falls - Snurgnug Rises
Warboss Bahrblock stomps towards the Biel-Tan Aeldari
Warboss Bahrblok waded into battle at the head of a stompy, foot slogging, altogether orky army against an Aeldari force seeking to steal control of a crucial city thoroughfare. The Aeldari deployed numerous hand-to-hand specialists to try and deal with the fighty ork force but in the end the green tide was too much for them and they were overrun. A great number of Aeldari were brutally slain, along with their Autarch commander, yet Warboss Barhblock was killed amidst the melee by an enemy Farseer’s spear. Even though Barhblock fell, the Orks achieved an overall victory and thus thwarted the Aeldari assault.

1. Warboss Bahrblock dies during the battle and is struck from the list forever. After all, he's a dead git.
2. An Ork victory means a character from the not-used list is promoted to fill Bahrblock's void, in this case, Snurgnug
3. Since Bahrblock was a Warboss in Mega Armor in GW's "Warlord/HQ slot", the newly promoted Character is also a Warboss in Mega Armor. If he had been a Big Mek, the new character would be a Big Mek as well, etc etc etc

FOR THE IMPERIAL GUARD
Again, similar system, with tweaks.

Whazgog's Dynamic Character System for Company Commander(s) and Other IG HQs
Names acquired via name generator - http://old.malleus.dk/Ordo/NameGenerator.aspx
Command Structure
http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/mediawiki/images/0/04/RegimentOrg.jpg

1. Name subtractions, augmentations, and additions are based on acquired combat experience or due to model acquisitions.

2. New names are added to the “Not Yet Used” list after every 3 victories regardless of what Warlord Types were deployed in battle.

3. Name augmentations are acquired when a deployed Commander (“Warlord”) achieves an especially noteworthy victory OR secures a string of victories {EX: 5 (*working number*) victories for “Bertolf Friedebert” becomes “Bertolf Friedebert: Defender of Garfield Prime” [utilize campaign location, important landmark, or species defeated en masse for naming]}.

4. FURTHERMORE, Warlords are awarded commendation medals {^*~+} for every 5 subsequent victories [i.e. 5, 10, 15, etc. = “Name Aug.", ^ , * , Etc.]
Example: After 15 victories- Bertolf Friedebert: Stalwart of Garfield Prime [ ^ * ]

5. “Not Yet Used” Names are “Promoted” into a vacant Command slot ONLY AFTER a current commander has been slain. Commanders (“Warlords”) that die in battle are denoted by red text color+line through and are deceased henceforth regardless of whether the deployed army wins or loses the battle overall.

6. WDCS is designed so that an army can WIN numerous battles (gaining a new name onto the "not yet used" list after every 3 victories) while also LOSING the deployed Commander in the process. If an army LOSES a battle but the deployed Warlord SURVIVES, said warlord is treated as “survived” and stays in command.

7. The system DOES NOT ALLOW for the command structure to have ZERO living names. IF ALL of the Commanders (“Warlords”) of the Regiment are slain, the Militarum Regimentos will cultivate a new list of names to take the places of those who died, thus starting the process anew. Since the the Departmento Munitorum is constantly tithing, organizing, and transporting reinforcements to crucial battle zones or heavily depleted regiments, there will always be fresh recruits and officers who are eager to win a victory, earn promotion, and heroically serve the Emperor and the Imperium of Man!

Again, image for reference attached.
***Various commanders can be utilized for various detachments.

1. Bertholf has won over 5 battles, so he has a Name Aug. - Bertolf Friedebert: Stalwart of Garfield Prime He will achieve his first commendation at 10 victories, and so on and so forth, at increments of 5.
2. Bertholf has won six times, so two new officers (per ever 3 wins) wait in the "Not Yet Used" column. They are promoted upon someones death.
3. Durnhelm Roft died in battle. He is now a martyr for the Imperium. Commander Pfungzig was promoted from the "Not Yet Used" list to take his place.

And there you have it!! I hope this inspires my fellow hobbyists to personalize their armies , add a little depth to their campaigns , or create background narratives for random encounters .

Let me know what you think of Whazgog's Dynamic Character System so far, feel free to apply changes or tweaks for your faction [again, I'd like for this to be a pseudo open-source situation {some way to catalogue ideas may be in order}], and let us know how your characters grow [or meet their tragically brutal deaths ]

May your 'Ead Bashin' be brutal and your Gunz never empty!
