So apparently the movie of I Kill Giants comes out today (Friday the 23rd) but I cannot for the life of me find any theater playing it. What little I have seen people saying about it is it's very faithful to the comic (which is amazing). Anyone been able to find how you can watch this damn movie? I want to throw all my money at it.

Huh. Just checked Fandango and it’s not showing in any theaters within 50 miles of me either. I thought the trailer for that looked cool too.

The trailer does a really poor job of representing the plot Which is good. Because it doesn't ruin what the movie is actually about.

If you get to watch this blind without knowing what I Kill Giants is I envy you. If it's as good as the comic you might be crying like a bitch by the end of it.

Would you mind giving a spoiler? The poster does less than nothing for me, in that I rolled my eyes when I saw it. I don't want to miss a good movie due to bad marketing.

I just watched this. I don't really want to spoiler it as it's so new...

I'm defo not the target audience.
I make a point of avoiding YA movies. Never watched Harry Potter.
Never heard of it before seeing the trailer last week.
Not read the comic.
Only really bothered as this thread jerked my memory.

And yet I absolutely loved it ... No expectations I guess, and no clue what to expect.

Some minor spoilers perhaps...
Spoiler:
It could have been a bit (a lot?) darker IMHO. And the ending was a bit too neat & tidy, despite being the logical conclusion.
I thought the acting was great all-round. Can't say I liked the main character a "lot", but that's almost certainly because she acted so well. Totally loved her sidekick! And it has Imogen Poots, who must have the coolest name in the known universe.

There is a moment of unadulterated heretical terror when Barbs flips a whole table ... a gaming table ... with painted terrain and minis on it!!!

Ok....

Heavy fething spolers because it's all heavy spoilers for this...

I mean this. Do not read this or gak will be ruined. It's best to go into this blind.

Spoiler:

I kill Giants is about a nerdy girl who is being taken care of, along with her little brother, by their older sister.

She doesn't have a lot of friends, shes brash and boisterous and kind of acts out. Shes kind of a bad ass.

Shes got that little bag you see on the posters and in it she pulls out her giant ass warhammer. She lays traps around her town and hunts giants.

But it's all kind of surface level there and not really whats going on.

In the comic is 5 issues maybe? And each issue is named a Chapter. Like "Chapter 3: The Ghoul". She gets sent to visit the school counselor. And throughout the first 4 issues there are words people say to her that are scratched out so you can't read them. She says giants are awful terrible monsters. They come and they eat and destroy everything thats good in your life and when it's done it's like nothing that was good was ever there to begin with.

It's a lot of how much of this is in her head and how much of it is real?

Well... By the end a huge hurricane is rolling into her coastal town and she sees it for what it is. A titan. Biggest and cruelest of all giants. And she goes out to fight it to save what matters to her. Other people think shes lost in the storm. Huge massive epic fight... so on so forth. Again... thats her perspective of it. It's big and bombastic and action but it's not really the point

More spoiler.

Spoiler:

Her mother is bed ridden in the upstairs of their house with what is implied to be a terminal illness.

The acting out and the giants she fights are all her avoiding facing her mother as she is withering away and also trying to fight off the bad thats coming. In the comic at least it's done in such a way that my brother (at the time a late 20s guy) cried like a little girl on the train heading in to work when he finished the book. I read a review of the movie that said to bring some tissues. It sounds like it's been translated really well to film.

That...that sounds like my coping mechanism for daily life. (Only mine are small swarms of things that live in the walls .)

Definitely going to see the film.

Ok, so apparently to watch it, mostly you need to stream it off something. I signed up for Vudu and got my first rental for $1.00 to watch it.

I just watched it. It's great.

It was made on a very modest budget of about 15 mil. The CGI isn't the best in the world because of it.
Spoiler:
The big end bit
could have been a little longer and a bit better with more of a budget but honestly with what they had they did an amazing job.

If you liked the comic they fething nailed it. If you never read the comic you should. But watch this movie too. It deserves anything and everything it can get.

Seems alot like “A Monster Calls”.

"Sometimes the only victory possible is to keep your opponent from winning." - The Emperor, from The Outcast Dead.
"Tell your gods we are coming for them, and that their realms will burn as ours did." -Thostos Bladestorm

Ive never seen a monster calls. Not disimilar. Except i kill giants is from 2009ish. I read a review that compared them but said i kill giants did way better at conveying its emotions.
