As a mother, you horrible, horrible people.

Personally I quite like the notion that they do in their weird twisted way. Bit like how Cersei's only redeeming feature is that she cares about her children. Plus I think its a great idea to take something that you normally think of in positive terms, "loving mother, wants her son succeed etc etc", " the dutiful son trying to be a better man" and making that the basis for these two super villains.

I mean I just read the most recent Malign Portents story and...

Spoiler:

On the one hand, he's a bit unamused by her games stealing the souls and her pretensions of Godhood. But, they're clearly conspiring together here and on the same page. Hes not exactly outing her to the rest of the alliance or attacking her for risking to break down the prison of Slannesh. Any other God would kill her for that. Not only is he aware of what shes doing but he seems to accept it without too much aside from stern words. We don't know much about Malerion, but I don't think a Dark God would tolerate that from anyone else; to me this comes across as indulgent behavior. I mean they are not remotely equals since he is on the same level as Sigmar.

Likewise, she is admonishing him. But its still a kind of "oh I want whats best for both of us", and "if you did this you'd be better man". Now, this story does frame that as a bit insincere, but its probably more of a half truth. What benefits her will probably benefit him and he probably knows it considering his mild reaction to her scheming.

Personally I think that's more interesting than Morathi just being 100% out for herself and using that to try and "manipulate" Maleketh. Or him thinking that shes just another rival. Coz, well, he'd just kill another rival.

I like the idea of that as it makes the story more interesting. Not sure if she still counts as his mother after the apocalypse though.

The original fluff on these two from back in (IIRC) 4th edition implied that Morathi really did love Malekith, while he was a pure sociopath and incapable of loving anyone. More recent fluff seems to have switched that around so that Malekith/Malerion does, as you say, 'indulge' his mother solely because she is his mother, while Morathi cares for nobody but herself. Personally, I found the original version much more compelling, as well as believable.

A little bit of righteous anger now and then is good, actually. Don't trust a person who never gets angry.

This was enjoyable story. I see their relationship as uneasy collaboration. Malerion knows Morathi can be devastatingly effective, when her machinations don't interfere with his own. I do not know, if it's fondness or some other feeling that could be in play.

I still think it'd for the best, if Morathi had never been re-introduced into the story.

Morathi never really loved Malekith at any point. He acted as a crutch for her when she lost Aenarion (the only person she ever really did love). She had similar feelings for Tyrion as she could see Aenarion in him, but she never really loved either.

I am not too up to speed with The End Times stuff. But I always felt the logical place to go with bringing Morathi back would be to make her full Chaos Slannesh. She'd betrayed Malekith and was in consort with fell powers. Sure Slannesh is a Chaos God, but, he does empower his servants like Fulgrim and Khorne keeps bringing Valkia back. Its odd that he would decide to eat her like any other elf. I get that this is her "doing her time" and is why people sort of tolerate her. But I never felt that other Gods could or would forgive her for this and that she would have to be brought back by Slannesh. The armybook makes out like they just don't trust her when, really, they would probably kill her on sight.

I mean, arguably, that is exactly what Slannesh has done. From his POV he might think that he has given her an awesome Daemon Princess body and she should be grateful for that; its just not what she had in mind. Plus her and all of her scathborn are a little bit Slanneshi. I mean I don't think she is secretly in league with Slannesh between the armybook, dev interviews and trailers. But I think its strange to make her an anti Slannesh character. That's the opposite of what she was.

Its obviously very fun having the dynamic duo back, but it does feel like theres some hand waving going on to bring us back to that point.

Well, in the old fluff, they DID love each other “in that way”. I guess new fluff of him just being her son and not bending her over his throne while making her call him “daddy” is an improvement.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Well she used to "love" him in her own obsesive evil mother kind of way in the old fluff. I suppose all is what you call love...

That would have been way cooler than more boring Order.

I wonder if the soul in the story is setup for something in the future, or if it was just a way to show how ruthless they both are?

Yeah I wondered if the soul was actually a named character as an easter egg.

They mentioned:

* Strong soul
* Love and hates Teclis

Any special character or bit of lore?

They are (or were) basically Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, with the added detail that she was also his mother.

Morathi has a very strong mother Gothel vibe inregards to Malerion:

Key difference is that in some evil twisted form she cares very much about him.

Of course he knows her better than anyone else, so deceiving becomes hard. His relationship to dark elves from WHF and this has not really changed in AoS apparently is summed up in another disney song:

The relationship was originally incestuous and obsessive 'love'.

Very much hints of Morgana Le Fay and Mordred, or Olympias and Alexander.
