Hi all! new here but not to the wonderful world of WH

I have followed WH for years now and only recently moved from drooling over the pages of White Dwarf to finally taking the plunge and building, painting and playing with my two boys.

Currently we are struggling with the basics of playing (we have chosen Tau, Primaris Space Marines and the Death Guard for our 3 armies) - we bought the First Strike box set which has some useful introductions to the main rules (move, shoot etc) but when we want to experiment with a characters weapons for examples we get lost and cant find an explanation.
So far we have spent a fortune on models, paints and codeci only to keep getting stumped and having to keep the games very basic. A prime example would be Melee - what is the range for a Melee Weapon?! it is not listed anywhere! I bought the Lord of Contagion recently thinking he would be a cool leader for my unit but even though I have his data in the codex i cant for the life of me figure out how to use his abilities so he ends up having one basic attack but luckily 7 Toughness!

I hope to eventually buy the WH Rule Book but after watching a review of it i dont think it will help me either. I would love to spend hours quizzing the staff in my local shop but i only have time to take my boys there each Sunday for a 3 hour kids club when the staff are too busy to explain rules anyway

Can anyone lend a helping hand?...please?!...

Hi and welcome!

Mmm, sounds like you're in a bit of a muddle. Not sure what is covered in the First Strike book and what isn't, I just have the full rulebook. You need to have a good re-read of how the charge phase and fight phase work. That will cover a lot of your questions on range etc, but...

You need to charge so that at least one model from your unit ends up within 1" of an enemy unit. You can then consolidate, and move each model up to 3" to get them closer so they can fight. Each model in your unit must be within 1" of an enemy, or within 1" of one of your guys that is within 1" of the enemy, in order to be able to fight.

Each of your models that is fighting gets to make the number of attacks (A) shown on his profile. So for your Lord Of Contagion that's 4. For each attack, you roll 1 dice. His Weapon Skill is 2+, which means he successfully hits on a roll of 2 or more. You then roll to wound for each successful hit, comparing your weapon strength (S4 from profile +3 for Manreaper = 7) with the target's toughness to see how easily you will do damage. Likely to be on a 3+ or even a 2+ with S7. If you roll any ones, the Manreaper special rule of Plague Weapon lets you reroll them. For each successful wound, your opponent will then get to make an armour save (Save stat on their profile), however your Manreaper with its -3 AP takes 3 off their rolls, so they may well not be able to succeed in that. Finally, each successful hit with the Manreaper does D3 (i.e. roll a '3-sided' dice - 1-2 on a D6 = 1, 3-4 = 2, 5-6 = 3) wounds.

He should go through regular troops like prunes through a short grandmother...

Thanks Crispy that was informative and funny!

I will work through what you have suggested and see how it goes - are you saying that Melee can only be used during Charge/Fight phase and not if i move a Poxwalker close to an enemy unit for example?

Welcome!!

You need to keep your models 1” away from enemy models at all times unless you declare a charge and succeed in making it into combat. At that point your troops can pile in 3” more when it’s their turn to attack, the process of which is well-detailed above. That’s the only point at which your melee weapons can be used, and if a range is listed on the weapon profile (often accompanied by the bracketed word ‘shooting’ when a weapon has both melee and ranged capabilities) then the weapon is a ranged attack to be resolved in the shooting phase.

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka

I am now trying to get my head round AP, Damage and Saves - is there a specific thread on here dealing with that?

Welcome to the forum. I don't know if there would be specific threads to deal with that, but there is a quick reference sheet that's fairly easy to find that covers things like that .
Basically AP counters armour saves. For example if you wound a model with a 3+ save. If your weapon has AP-2 your opponent will need to roll 5+ to save. Then if they take the wound, the damage amount specified in the weapon profile is then applied (or rolled then applied) and subtracted from the models wound characteristic. If this number hits 0 the model dies. The BRB would be a big help to you. Plus its chock full of fluff and such. But as I say there is a quick reference sheet out there. Hope this helps in some way.

You may want to check out youtube. There are loads of guides on how to play. Just make sure you find the right edition. Here is MiniWarGaming. They have a multipart series that goes over each phase.

Welcome! Don't be too disheartened by how tricky learning some of the rules can get, I found as a newish player that every game will gradually get more and complex as you learn from other people (and your own mistakes!) I'd definitely suggest trying to get a game with a current player, as usually they'll be very helpful and won't mind if you get a bit stuck!

Another thing I'd invest in is the open war cards. They can change around some basic stuff such as deployment zones and the objective of the game, so even just using very basic rules won't matter too much, since every game will be different from the card selections
