Subject: Need help painting/making Burgundy for new army
I have started a new Deathguard army and I want to paint them something different from their usual green. I was thinking that an army of Deathguard and/or Nurgle painted in a Burgundy/Maroon colour scheme would look pretty cool and standout from what you would normally see..
However, I am having a slight issue in painting with Burgundy as I am not to sure how where to start and how to progress.
I mostly paint with Vallejo game color range, GW washes and use either Army Painter spray for my primer or an Air brush. Depending on what I have around me at the time.
My main question is;
Would it be better to prime the model(s) in a Black Primer then build up the colour with Vallejo Scarlett Red/ Gory Red/ Dark Fleshtone, Nuln Oil, Warlord purple for highlights and Squid Pink for edge highlight
OR
Prime model(s) in Army Painter Chaotic Red primer, Nuil Oil, Highlight with Scarlett/Gory red and edge highlight in Warlord purple then Squid Pink.
What do you think guys? How have ye painted Burgundy before? any helpful tips you could pass on? Appreciate all the help ye give me!
I find dark reds to be very difficult to highlight. If you highlight with orange, the contrast is often too bright. Pinks make the overall thing look pinkish, which is usually not what you want, so I'm afraid the purple/pink route isn't going to work very well.
Vallejo's dark fleshtone is a bit brownish, and is actually often used to highlight leather parts (and gives a nice light brown when mixed with a bone color). I never tried to highlight reds with it, but maybe you're on to something. Did you try mixing it with a very light red to see what it does?
Otherwise, as Alex said, try mixing your base with yellows. It might become a bit too orange, but that's definitely worth a try.

Burgundy is quite difficult - or at least for me, due to the red going into violet / brown. My current Chaos army is painted in a old Burgundy to burgundy scheme.
What i do is basically:
Black Primer and after that a basecoat of Rhinox Hide. The first layer is Khorne red thinned down 1:2 & i leave the recesses & shadows in Rhinox hide. After that i go to a 1:1 mix of Mephiston red & Khorne red,
again thinned down. I apply this to 50-ish % of the surfice, with khorne red & Rhinox hide still showing. The highlights & Edge highlight than is Mephiston red mixed with Trollslayer Orange & Yriel Yellow, slowly
increasing the mixture towards the Yriel yellow. To tone it down afterwards i usually go over it with a thinned down glaze or thinned down wash. I personally use bloodletter / Carroburg Crimson, but if you want to
go towards a hint of violet you could probably go for thinned down Druchii Violet, just to change the hue of the color.

Is the way to go.
TEST TEST TEST
Oddly enough I actually bought the Chaotic red primer in spray today and was going to use that exact method. weird
Ill post results as i am doing 3 different types to see which one comes out best. e.g. one based in white then chaotic red, one primed black than chaotic red and one just primed chaotic red before adding the above steps to everything.
