I've never magnetized anything before, but was thinking i'd start!

Could anyone suggest the right magnet dimensions to buy for magnetizing different arms to an IG body?

Thanks!

I use 2x2mm neodymium magnets for SM arms. I dont have any IG troops, they are a bit smaller, something like 1,5x1,5mm is probably better for them.

2x1mm is probably what you need. 3x1 or 2mm might be too wide.

get the highest N number you can though.

What exactly are you trying to magnetize?

Just different arms onto Scion bodies, like the power fist, standard bearer arms, etc.

Melee weapons and standards shouldn't be a problem.
especially since they dont have cables to deal with like the normal weapons

An alternative to this is to Pin them with a thick wire and make sure the holes are exactly the same or slightly (and i mean slightly) smaller so you can just press fit them.

You can buy packs that contain multiple sizes. My goto is anything 1mm thick and then to pick a width to match the smaller of the pieces I want to join. For vehicles I use something 2-3mm thick simply because the pieces can be larger and heavier.

I used some 2x1mm you can buy a few hundred off amazon really cheap and they work great for arms, even bits on tanks too, you can get loads and go crazy

I remember using 3x1. Though I dislike magnetizing troops - you just end up having way to many lose parts. Better buy a dedicated squad and make 1 for each combination, or multiples if needed.

For most basic squads, such as Imperial Guard infantry squads, I don't bother with magnets at all. I use fairly standard load-outs and by far the troops don't get anything other than a basic lasgun anyways.
On my terminators, however, I tend to use 2x1mm (or stronger and larger 3x1mm more recently) on each and every member. Picked up a boatload of spare shoulder pads from Ebay, and magnetized every arm variant with it. I can swap out thunder hammer/storm shield load-outs for all lightning claws, or give them stormbolters with any amount of power fists or chainfists. The individual weapon choices become even more pronounced when I use this same idea on my Chaos Terminators.

And then there are a couple of 5x1mm magnets for most vehicle weapons in sponsons and the likes, and the 10x2mm I tend to replace dreadnought shoulders with.

I use 1/32" x 1/16", which are the smallest size I regularly see available, to magnetize the special weapons on my Wracks, and they work like a charm, fit perfectly into the deltoid without leaving the remaining plastic too thin around them. With slightly less beefy arms on IG, you'll probably want to make sure you drill them perfectly because you'll have less wiggle room, but they should do the trick.
