Obviously 99/100 cases sniping will be handled by the scouts. If a situation required it though, be it a battle strategy or any other reason, do space marines have a sniper weapon they would employ? Or would they just use the same model stalker bolters?

The stalker is probably the default sniper weapon.

Depending on the situation, veterans could well be deployed in scout armour with sniper rifles, too. The Deathwatch do that, and wolf scouts are veterans.

There are some power armor sniper units. The Mantis Warriors have been in official fluff for a long time, they fought in the Badab war on the losing side and got a forge world character, but no snipers. The Raptors have a sniper chapter mast r, and their chapter tactic gave them heavy 1 rending options on their bolters. The heresy-era recon units could have power armor and sniper rifles.

In those two chapters the snipers seem more like marksmen or sharpshooters than snipers, and they use m40 targeters or stalker pattern bolters, not sniper rifles.

Qeustion from a "military noob" here, what's the difference between a sniper, a marksman and a sharpshooters ?

fully fledged Marines have sniper rifles and similar - just not in the game for no apparent reason.

In the modern military snipers are usually deployed in pairs (with a spotter) and are often used outside a primary combat zone. They carry purpose built, high accuracy rifles, and will often carry anti-material rifles if the mission calls for it. These are the guys that kill individual targets from half a mile away, or sit way back on a hill and take out weapons teams in combat. They have very dark sense of humor, and will prank you.

Sharpshooters operate a little closer in, and are often active inside the perimeter of a combat zone. They still have "sniper" rifles, but are equipped primarily for anti-personnel action. Their doctrine is to take high ground and eliminate targets in cover and provide area denial. These are the guys you see on rooftops providing cover. These guys wear mirrored sunglasses and are too cool to hang out.

Marksmen are just troopers that maxed out their range scores, but for one reason or another aren't in one of the other groups. This will be the guy in the squad with a bipod or maybe a bag who takes long shots and aims for anyone on the other side who looks like they are issuing orders. These guys drink. A lot. They will watch your back.

I have a Dev squad with four Sniper Rifles, I don't know what your'e talking about.

They snipe tanks all the time.

Why take a lower calibre weapon when you need "One shot, one Kill"?

Marines are so silled they could snipe with a flamer if the situation dictates.

Hope this helps!

A scout sniper. Does a ton of enemy observation and is trained to a high degree in camouflage and evasion as well as observation. The sniping people and materials is part of their job too of course. But they are the eyes of the commander.

The designated marksman is usually someone who washed out of sniper school and is equipped with an accurized rifle to engage targets in direct support of his platoon

A marksman is just a decent gak.

In the military if you don’t score expert. Then you are a marksman which sucks haha. To be honest if you can’t shoot expert. You suck.

I think they do have access to dedicated sniper rifles. But I expect the stalker bolter is the one they would be most often to use. Since as you say most dedicated sniper missions will be handled by scouts. Furthermore tactical squads have to be versatile and able to adapt, the Stalker being closer to a Marksman rifle allows them to target key enemies while also remaining versatile enough to be useful on a changing battlefield. Some may even just stick to a Boltgun, in the Legacy of Caliban trilogy we see a marine going for the Marksman Commendation and he just uses a regular bolter and his own autosenses.

So while I'm sure they could access a dedicated sniper rifle, I expect it would be more their preference to use a Stalker Bolter.
