Hi folks,

I've been out of the game since about the end of Mk2. Recently moved to a new area where it seems like there is a good community of gamers and I'm looking to get back into the swing of things. I was wondering what major changes I should expect from mk2 to mk 3?

I'm thinking of picking up Cygnar again as I used to play them, however I'm also tempted to do Cryx as well. I'm looking to build a battlebox level force to start of with, but I don't find the current Cygnar or Cryx starter boxes particularly exciting. As such I'm looking to scratch-build a 0 points list to get me started. I'm looking for suggestions as to what might work.

Cheers in advance,

Cas

0 points is kind of a strange size to build for. It really only works for the battle boxes in my experience. That said, the question is really what caster you want to play and from there its a lot easier to design a battlegroup for them. If you're looking for a caster that you'll continue to play to 75, there's quite a few options, but it might be easier if you have some preferences to get the conversation going.

Fair comment. I was actually looking for suggestions because of said difficulty building a 0 points list! I quite fancy trying Siege1 or Stryker 2 for Cygnar, but I was struggling to get a list with more than 1 heavy and 1 light jack in it. I don't really know much about Cryx casters, so I'm not sure who I'd play.

Do people around you really stick to 0 point games? It's been my experience that those are mostly a novelty that get exceedingly difficult to get players to stick to for more than a week or two. As you say, its really hard to confine the game to that level and frankly, its not particularly interesting or balanced beyond learning the game. Stryker2 is a good example of why. He's pretty capable of taking out an opposing caster from just about anywhere without an army to fight through.

I'd suggest using this site to get an idea of what kind of casters people play and what they run with them:

I don't really know what the local meta or standard points level is, I've not been able to go to the local clubs yet. I was more looking for a 0 points list as I need to buy in from scratch, and it would let me get a few models on the board and start picking up the rules again without breaking the bank. I'd be looking to expand to higher points games over a few months. I'm just not drawn to the battlebox casters, so I'd like to start out with someone I'm more likely to keep using. I suppose the other (better?) option is to buy a caster and the first few jacks i need for a list and play games to fit whatever points I wind up with.

Thanks for the link, I'll have a look and see what takes my fancy!

The reason I asked is I was just curious where the 0 point cap was rooted. If its just a personal goal I'd just ignore it and build whatever. 2-3 even 5 points over isn't going to make a huge difference in battlegroup games. A lot of times the premium jacks just add larger army support, so a lot of the particulars of the exact cost of things aren't incredibly relevant in low point games. I'd be more concerned with building a battlegroup that will serve you in larger point games than trying to come in under the caster's limit.

That makes sense to me. In that case I'll probably just pick up a caster I like and add a couple of lights and a heavy and not worry about points too much. What would be a good start for Stryker2, Seige1 or Gaspy1?

I'm just getting back into it too, and decided against getting a battlebox caster. One thing that helped me was reading up on Battlecollege about the changes each 'Caster went through in the Mk.II to Mk.III transition.

From there I would suggest picking a theme for a faction you like and building from there. Theme Forces seem to be the way most people are playing, and you are really handicapping yourself not playing one. Once you find a theme you like, than pick your 'Caster and start list building. I would have been bummed if I bought a bunch of stuff that left me stuck without the free Theme bonuses.

Definitely pick a theme to start with. The design of MK3 is very much under the idea that the game has grown to the point where a faction is daunting and they want us playing in sub factions. Casters work in any theme, though they often lean towards supporting specific models. Of these, Gaspy1 is probably the most capable of running anything he wants as he's something of a generalist. Stryker2 is super saiyan smash face and fairly independent. He probably best supports Storm Division (Storm Knights) but can capably run a gun line in Gravediggers (Trenchers). Siege is probably the one most tied to a specific playstyle. He's very much a camp and shoot kind of caster and wants to run either Grave Diggers or just a lot of ranged jacks. I will also add that if you like the character, Siege2 can be super fun as well.

Mostly though, I'd recommend picking a faction you like multiple casters for. You don't want to invest heavily in one caster as over time either the game or your own preferences are likely to change and its much easier to move to a new caster in the same faction than pick up a new one from scratch.

Thanks for the replies:

So for Cygnar I think I'd look at the Storm Division - something like:

Stryker2
Heavy Jack (Ol' Rowdy, Ironclad or Stormclad?)
Lancer
1 other light jack (Minuteman, Charger or Firefly?)

I'd maybe look at Nemo2 or Nemo3 as a second caster, or Brisbane in one form or another.

For Cryx I think I'd go for:
Gaspy1
Cankerworm
Deathripper
Slayer

Maybe with Terminus as a second caster?

Looking good. For Stryker I'd probably vote no on the Ironclad of the 3. Chargers and Fireflies are both quite good.

If you're interested in Terminus, he does mean things with Ghost Fleet.

in war room at least, the program doesn't allow theme lists at the zero point level. I will say that of all the factions, Convergence changed the least, they didn't get a zero point starter, though making a zero point list for them is easy. On topic, stay away from Sloan in zero point games as she is a ballbuster in any format, unless you are playing against something like Barnabas1.

For Siege1, I'd suggest Triumph and a hunter. If you wanted to troll your opponent, consider Haley3 with a Hammersmith and Thorn.
