Hi all,

First time posting in the historical threads, but I've been toying with a Union ACW Brigade for sometime.

I'm coming towards the tail end of an AoS project for GW's GT in heat 3, and already looking into the hobby horizon. Well I do have my Brit Para's to finish, oh and the Napoleonic's, oh and the copious GW armies, but I'm sure you lot know how it goes!

My initial thoughts are to create V Corps' Colonel Strong Vincent's 3rd Brigade, 1st Division at Little Round Top.

More specifically:

Commander-In-Chief - MG George Sykes

Brigade Commander - Colonel Strong Vincent

Infantry Regiments
20th Maine - Col Joshua L. Chamberlain
16th Michigan - LtC Norval E. Welch
44th New York - LtC Freeman Conner, & Maj Edward B. Knox
83rd Pennsylvania - Cpt Orpheus S. Woodward

Artillery
5th U.S. Light Artillery, Battery D - 1st Lieutenant Charles E. Hazlett

Cavalry
17th Pennsylvania Cavalry - Cpt William Thompson

My biggest issue is where to get my models from and how. There are some amazing deals knocking around from Perry brothers, and Warlords, but they just don't come close enough to my actual list.

1. I prefer the idea of working with plastic artillery, not metals.
2. Perry's have the extra metal casts that Warlord does not. CiC's and casualties and the like.
3. I want a mix of Zouaves (The 44th NY were showy buggers), and skirmishing battalions.
4. I'd prefer not to have the first generic ACW infantry box, but the dedicated army infantry boxes.

How have any of you chaps gone about it?

Whilst I'm at it, and basing spray paints that work well? I presume army painters Ultra Blue, or GW's own?

Many thanks!

Luvvo,

I think you'll enjoy the "Killer Angels". It is a storied regiment popularized in books and film. I based in white. Aibrushed pants with electric blue army painter then 2 coats of watered down army painter Deep blue (I think deep blue.) Have it written down at home if you're interested.

I highly recommend Perry Bros "battle in a box." So cheap. I bought 2.

I batched my two sets, sacrificing strict historical accuracy for speed and playability. Here's my finished product and process.

Most important was this modeling discovery. I CANNOT STRESS HOW HAPPY I AM with this cheap and easy process of making nice looking historic flags.

Hey Doktor!

Wow you really chewed through the boys quickly!

I'm really torn between the Battle in a Box in order to get some other friends involved at my FLG club. Whilst I also really want my own formed Brigade, as opposed to generic infantry.

I also realllllyy want to create a teddy bear board! i.e http://spudnick080.blogspot.co.uk/2015/11/making-teddy-bear-fur-terrain-mat-my.html

Think a farmhouse and fencing whilst playing on that would look excellent. I really think the aesthetics are super important when it comes to ACW gaming!

Have you played any games yet, and if so under what rule set?

Many thanks,

Luvvo!

The troops are coming together!

I was a little miffed to find out that the Perry skirmish box, was actually just the normal union line box, but with a few extra skirmishing frames. Was hoping for some different sculpts. Oh well.

On another note, has anyone converted Perry Zouaves to wear forage caps? Apparently the 44th N.Y did not wear turbans or fezzes! Although this is the one kit, where the hats are not seperate :(

Afraid the progress has stopped as I was away...

But during that time I was able to read Gods & Generals and Killer Angels, working my way through the Last Full Measure at the moment.

Great books!
