Hi all, I've been a fan of the redemptor since it came out but never got one. After seeing a bunch this weekend I've decided I can't put it off any longer! What builds do people find work best and does anyone have any advice on how best to use them? I'm leaning towards plasma cannon, gatling cannon, storm bolter and icarus pod to baby sit my Devastators with a captain.

Gatling covers more bases.

I'd recommend the baby gatling every time, and the main gatling too, if you're assaulting with him. If you're using him as a counter assault, sitting with your captain in a bubble, and therefore will only move to lunge in and smack someone, the incinerator is pretty decent at S9, -4 2D. If only it was a flat 4 shots. The amount of times I've rolled a 1 for that...

Overall, I quite like the redemptor, but it's overshadowed by a lot of other better dreads... But hey, he looks great...

Which dreads would you say overshadow him?

Contemptor Codex
RELIC Contemptor
RELIC Dereadeo
RELIC leviathan
Contemptor Mortis

Each have their own strengths and weaknesses but the redemptors biggest weakness is T7 3+ no invulnerable save

I used to play a guy who would run both a Redemptor and Leviathan together, and I can say the Leviathan is much better in most regards. The only thing the Redemptor beats it on is number of shots, which doesn't matter as much when the Leviathan is still pumping out 20 shots that are far stronger than the Redeptor.

A leviathan costs more than 50% more than a redemptor, and has no close combat arm. Comparing their firepower alone isn’t really fair.

That said, I don’t think redemptors really work. They suffer from being armed with (mainly) heavy weapons but wanting to move and fire, but with an average BS that degrades. Overall it’s just not a great package. If it’s below half wounds and moving it needs a 5+ to hit most things, even before those things turn out to be alaitoc or something.

Quite a lot of other dreads work better. The normal contemptor is best at bringing a fist where it’s required, thanks to its 9” move and 2+ WS. Basic dreads hit almost as hard as redemptors for much less cost and don’t degrade - though they do die! Venerable dreads are good shooty bots.

The deredeo is probably the closest direct analogue to a redemptor. Both cost 202 with a typical load-out - with the Icarus on the redemptor but leaving the deredeo’s missiles off. The deredeo has 1 more wound, a 5++ that becomes 4++ in cc, a versatile main gun in the anvillus array and better BS. But it has no ccw so it’s unhappy in cc, sort of unlike the redemptor. But the redemptor isn’t happy in cc against loads of things either, and doesn’t have a 4++.

I think there are too many dreadnoughts.

But yes, I like the gatling the best.

I’ve used both guns and like the gatling better just due to weight of fire. The macro plasma variable number of shots can let you down.

Bow down to Guilliman for he is our new God Emperor!

Martel - "Custodes are terrible in 8th. Good luck with them. They take all the problems of marines and multiply them."

"Lol, classic martel. 'I know it was strong enough to podium in the biggest tournament in the world but I refuse to acknowledge space marines are good because I can't win with them and it can't possibly be ME'."

DakkaDakka is really the place where you need anti-tank guns to kill basic dudes, because anything less isn't durable enough.
