I was sure there was a thread on here talking about Detroit and how there are bits to be avoided, but I couldn't find it. Apologies if this is a duplicate.

I'm going to be spending a few days in a city just outside Detroit, called Novi. I've no experience of it personally, so I've no idea if there's anywhere I should try to check out, or if there's anything I should be aware of. I've not been in the area for about 15 years so I've no real frame of reference.

Are there any good restaurants or geek places?

Novi is a run of the mill suburb. Plenty of shopping and restaurants. Imperium Games is a few miles away in Wixom. Downtown and Midtown Detroit are fine, more or less. The rough areas are mostly in the neighborhoods immediately surrounding those areas.

Detroit eh. Bring a nice car and a positive attitude and you alone will have made it a better place just by being there.

It'll be a rental so whilst it probably won't be nice, it'll at least be clean

Thanks. I'm sure I've heard of Imperium games so I'll try to check it out!

Oh god why novi? It's boring out there.

I personally am not a fan of the west side of our glorious little metropolitan murder fair, it's not that bad it really isn't it, but you'll find quite a few things to do if that's what you're looking for.

Definitely hit up the Henry Ford and Greenfield village (if the village is open) ask Lord of hats how much he loves that place :3 SAVING HISTORY HATS SAVING HISTORY!

If you will be closer to the city center you can always Check out the ren cen, I don't think there are any major games happening but the pizza palace (i refuse to acknowledge it's true name) is supposedly nice. May 4th-7th there is a star wars marathon happening at a local gallery/pub costumes are mandatory, also sometime in may the Detroit Institute of arts near the WSU campus is getting a display of the Star Wars Costumes in too so if you're here for that grab a ticket. uh... lets see... what else is there.. Idk i'ld have to look around for other stuff. Living here alot of the things we do just kinda happen and either I go or I don't go.

Ground Rules: Keep your wits about you. It is Substantially safer than the media reports However it is a major city and it is not to be triffled with. Be polite if you are an donkey-cave to people someone will eventually break you. Some guys broke into my grandmas house once, the police found them the next block over with broken legs about 2 weeks later... So yeah... Don't do that. We universally accept our teams presently suck though. Driving is hazardous Avoid 696 and certain parts of 94 and 75 if you can. 696 W is shutting down for 6 months this saturday soooo that's a thing.

The Potholes are to die for, literally. Do not be a rookie and serve out unless it appears to be one of satan's craters. in which case slow your speed and try to switch lanes otherwise take the front end damage.

If you're up for a drive you can always head up tino the thumb I always recommmend Port Crescent as a state park but this time of year idk how it looks.

Also Greek Town for the greek places... I mean it seems obvious but yeah Definately Greek town, Gyro at the Golden Fleece is amazing, also the Pizzapopolis is alright. I prefer buddies (which are in the suburbs should be one out by novi) and Check out our Zoo largest Polar bear exhibit in the world still last the zoo checked.

Safety wise don't do stupid things, drive with your car locked, windows down is fine, don't leave it running unattended, lock it at gas stations and you'll be fine.
But yeah man There's some stuff to do for sure. I'll try to keep an Eye, I've lived here the last 27 years of my 27 year life so i'm fairly familiar.

Not a huge fan of Novi though. Especially their tinyass comic con, rude terrible vile place.

On the potholes: Seriously though do do you best to avoid them and excersize caution with out being dumb, we have had deaths as a result of potholes. We are not joking. It's a terrible season for them too.

PSS in novi you will be closest to the henry ford. So it's definitely a good stop to make. You'll have to head downtown for the Greek food.

Stole preserved... details details hats. details details...

But seriously you should totally check it out both to bother hats and because it is chalked full of history like the plane that flew over the Arctic or Anarctic (one of those) the limo Kennedy was shot in model T's other cars... the original Gameboy and Pokemon Red (not kidding). Old American Style Resturaunts the 1950's home of the future. Atomic era stuff, tons of huge trains(might be less exciting for you because you probably have trains in the UK but we don't really have those here so that's a cool cool thing for us) The oscar Meijer weiner mobile.... Lots and lots of stuff.

Cabin lincoln was born in, his courtroom, also edison's workshop. And home... We've done alot of relocating to save what other states didn't want to

I heard Detroit deep dish is actually pretty good, and I've always wanted to try it so that is my suggestion as I have only ever driven near it

It's just sqaure pizza that's the secret. I prefer ours to the Chicago Style and New York style pizzas though. Buddy's is the palce to go for that (Or if you find yourself near Warren, Roseville Eastpointe, St. Clair Shores, Cloverleaf.)

A friend of mine (we're from Canada) decided he wanted to shoot guns for his bachelor party, so we went to a place called Top Gun shooting range... the Top Gun part is right, anyhow. We shot a bunch of different pistols and an Uzi. Like, fully automatic Uzi. Because you can buy them off the shelf for home defence, right?

Don't expect a safety lesson. Don't expect to be shown how to load the things, unless you ask. Be prepared to be scared out of your mind as soon as you step outside, because ANYONE could be concealed carrying any of the death machines you just fired. And be prepared to watch people pull out big wads of cash to just buy gunS off the shelf.

A very cool experience, and really holds up a mirror to things you probably take for granted "back home". Make sure to shoot a couple rounds through a Smith and Wesson 0.500 cal revolver. Most powerful handgun on the planet (was at the time, anyhow) and anyone could just be walking around with one, loaded, in their pocket.

Lots of great advice, thanks!

Novi isn't my choice, so I'm stuck with it. I don't think I'll have much free time so won't be venturing too far and certainly not into the city.

The Ford museum is a good idea, looks like it's quite close to the airport so I may be able to go for a while in the morning before I get a flight. Is it worth doing if I've only got an hour or so, or do I really need to give it a full day?

Shooting range is pretty tempting; we don't really have them over here so I haven't shot a gun in nearly 20 years, and even then that was mostly bolt action rifles.

I was in Detroit one time for a show, deep in the city. The thing that kind of gave me the willies is when we were down there we did not see anyone else. There was no one...no homeless, no one. It was like coming out of the venue, late at night, and find the world has ended. I wasn't even worried about crime because that would require people to commit the crime, which there was not. So find one of these sections and get a feeling of what the world would be like without people in it.

Actually, here is a good song about Detroit. It also has some do's and don'ts in Detroit.
Song was from the mid 90s but still feels, apropos.

I can't say about the shooting rang

:Edit: but the Uzi thing is overhyped. We have guns everywhere it's the nature of the states. That said if you do go shooting unless the place has special permits you probably aren't going to be firing automatic weapons here. But if you wanted to, idk how receptive they'd be, the Selfridge ANG base is to the north out by... I actually don't know the nearest city we all just call it selfridge. Idk if there are any airshows but I think there's an air museum there. It has a long standing history in our air Force and is home to two of the original squadrons supposedly. We have F-22 and F-35 and Thunderbolt/warthog A-10s

Last year was the centennial airshow. So they also flew mustangs, phantoms and tons of other older aircraft. And displayed a search and rescue operation. As well as blew up some stuff for the hell of it and live fired the A-10's main Canon into the ground.

You could see if they're doing any shows or yours if that interests you. But that is far from Novi and the DET terminals.

The coast guard does offer toures of facilities too but again idk how receptive they'd be if you're a foreign national. But it's pretty cool to see an icebreaker. If you'll be around the downtown area you can sometimes see Canadian and american patrol boats on the river too.

But the Ford it depends if Greenfield is open. Greenfield is basically a replica Hamlet to the early american times shops, resturaurmts, Western Midwest east coast, essentially everything with actual buildings moved brick by brick to the museum.

The museum itself is not so fantastical 3 hours tops you could probably see everything if your we're motivated and had a bit of a plan. Most of the coolest attractions can probably be seen in about 1:30 or so. But it's a neat place. I like to go offen when I have a chance. Still not sure I've seen everything and I've been about 4-12 times.

It's a worthy trip even if you can't go the whole day.

And yes it's closer to the terminals but it's still aways away in relation to Novi though I think it's on the way to Novi. Like I said no is not my normal place I usually don't travel around Novi Inkster area and I only go out Dearborn for the museum basically.

I prefer the det-windsor area I went to school down there for 6-7 years so not surprising really. I'm sure there's more stuff to do out that way that I do not know about, you might be closer to Ferndale so if you want to throw axes and get drunk a bar recently opened up out there that lets you do that.

Also fun fact: if you travel east from Novi in any direction (north east south east east east) you will lnot hit the boundaries of the metro area for about an hour or hour and a half. You will hit Canada before you leave the city scape.

I recently traveled to Läs Vegas and I was shocked that after 20 minutes of driving the city ended. I've literally never seen the pitch black of no city before. Even traveling north in Michigan we don't get so pitch black it's crazy. Never realize how bright our area was. Just blows my mind.

Darth_Lopez has already done an excellent job covering things, but i also have to yell at them for mentioning cloverleaf and making me homesick.

The one thing i remember about Novi is that i hated trying to drive out to get there.

Avoid.

“Good people are quick to help others in need, without hesitation or requiring proof the need is genuine. The wicked will believe they are fighting for good, but when others are in need they’ll be reluctant to help, withholding compassion until they see proof of that need. And yet Evil is quick to condemn, vilify and attack. For Evil, proof isn’t needed to bring harm, only hatred and a belief in the cause.”

Dunno much about detroit (other than the airport) but pontiac mostly sucks. Detroit probably has gotten some more crap than it deserves in corruption movies and games but it's somewhat legit. I think new york and los angeles deserve to get trashed on so much harder though (humorously).

Everybody in michigan is big on the Red Wings (our hockey team) but they don't seem to be doing as well. Also avoid northern michigan where all those fish flies come up during june or july. They're disgusting af.

Cursing in the videos so probably nsfw.

Probably the truest thing you can see on michigan.
